Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. September 27, 1909. Serial No. 519,668.
18 Francis street, Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in `Adjustable Die-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in die holders for use on any kind of a machine in which dies are employed.
The object of the invention is to provide a die holder having adjustable die gripping jaws, by means of which dies of various sizes may be interchangeably secured to the holder.
A further object is to provide 'means whereby the jaws may be quickly adjusted to receive dies of different sizes.
IVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a die holder constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional view through the holder taken on the line with the jaw adjusting screw; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the adjustable die gripping jaws.
My improved die holder comprises a body portion 1 having on its opposite ends attaching members 2, by means of which the holder is secured to the operating mechanism or machine (not shown). The body portion 1 of the holder is provided on each side, and at its opposite ends with laterally projecting guide lugs 3 which project beyond t-he outer surfaces of the holder on which the die rests. The lugs 3 are provided with beveled or inclined inner faces 4.
The body portion 1 of the holder is provided on its opposite sides with recesses 5 to provide space for the movement of the die gripping jaws hereinafter described. The body portion of the holder is also provided with a longitudinally disposed slot or passage 6. Adjustably engaged with the recessed portions 5 on each side of the body portion of the holder and with the beveled or inclined inner surfaces 4 of the guide lugs 3 are die gripping jaws 7 said jaws comprising heads 8, the inner surfaces of which are preferably roughened or serrated, .as shown at 9 to facilitate the gripping engagement thereof with the dies. The heads S are beveled or inclined to their opposite ends as shown at 10 to fit against or slidably engage the inclined surfaces 4 of the lugs 3. The heads 8 of the jaws are also provided with Shanks 12 which project from the lower sides of the heads and are preferably flush with the outer side thereof, as shown. In the shanks 12 adjacent to their connection with the heads 8 are formed threaded apertures 13. The aperture 13 of one'of said Shanks having a right hand thread, while the aperture 13 of the opposite shank is provided with a left hand thread. In the lower portions of the shanks below the aperture 13 are formed guide passages 14.
In the body portion of the holder is arranged a jaw adjusting screw 15, one end of which is provided with right hand threads and the other end with left hand threads. rPhe extreme outer ends of the screw 15 are squared as shown at 16 for the reception of a wrench or similar operating tool.
When the parts of the holder are assembled the jaws 7 are engaged with the opposite ends of the adjusting screw by means of which said jaws are moved into and out of the recesses 5 in the opposite sides of the holder thereby decreasing and increasing the width of the space between them, thus providing a space of the proper width to receive different sizes of dies which are arranged in operative position on the outer side of the holder between the jaws and said dies are securely held in place by the serrated surfaces 9 of the gripping jaws by operating the adjusting screw 15 to cause said jaws to firmly grip the opposite sides of the die.
By means of a holder constructed as herein shown and described it will be readily seen that dies of different width may be quickly and easily interchanged and secured in operative position on the holder.
This die holder may be used on machines for making buttons, machines for making gun butts, typewriter keys, automobile switches, telephone receiversand the like.

down like a drop hammer. It will be obvious, however, that the holder may be employed in connection with any `kind of die on any kind of machine.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation ofthe invention will be readily understood without Arequiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and theminor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of' this invention as defined in the appended claims.
Havinfr thus described and ascertained the nature oiP my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A die holder comprising a body portion having formed in its opposite sides recesses, guide lugs arranged on the opposite sides of said body portion, die gripping aws arranged in said recesses and slidably engaged with said guide lugs, and means to adjust said jaws and to clamp the same into tight engagement with dies of various sizes.
2. A die holder comprising a body portion having recessed opposite sides, guide lugs arranged on the opposite sides of saidbody portion, gripping jaws slidably engaged with said guide lugs to move into and out of said recesses, and a jaw adjusting screw whereby said jaws are simultaneously adj usted to enable the same to be engaged with dies of diiierent widths.
