ERNEST N. HUMPHREY, OF NEW BIEt IIITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE TRAUT &
HINE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORA- TION OF CONNECTICUT.
To all whomit may concern.
Be it known that I, ERNEST N. HUMrHREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in separable Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to separable fasteners of the cast-off type used in the suspender construction. Such'afastener is designed topermit the strap and cord to be readily attached and detached, when the invention is embodied in suspenders of standard construction. A preferable embodiment of the invention in a cast-ofi of this character is described in detail in the following specification and taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In these drawings: Figure 1 is a view in.
front elevation of a suspender cast-01f constructed in accordance with the present 1nvention. Fig. 2 is a similar View but with.
the parts separated. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Figs. 4: and 5 show the separate parts of one form of cast-0E.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 indicates the front end of a suspender shoulder strap, the lower end of this strap running through a slotted plate 2 forming one of the two separable members of the cast-off. This plate is provided with a downward extension 3 havmg a slot 4 therein, the width of this slot being restricted from intermediate its ends to the lower end, so that in general configuration, it-is suggestive of a key-hole. At the point where the restriction begins, the face of the plate 3 is formed with oppositely disposed raised abutment members 5, these being positioned at opposite sides of the slot. The outer separable part in this case comprises the cord guide member with attaching means. This other part is preferably formed as follows: I provide a strip of sheet metal bent to form a cord guide 6, the sides of said cord guide at its upper end being joined as at 7. This upper end carries rigidly a stud 8 projecting outwardly therefrom at substantially right angles and having a head 9 atits outer end. This head is of a diameter to permit its insertion through the large end of the slot 4, its shank being sufficiently small to extend within the restricted portion of the slot, but

its head beingof too great diameter to pass between theraised abutment 5, although it may pass over and beyond the same and rest therebelow with the shank resting substantially at the restricted end of the slot. I inter-pose a. spring between the cord guide and the slotted plate. The spring normally tends to hold the head of the stud against the plate and in line with the raised abutments 5 The spring, however, may yield under as pressure to enablethe head of the stud to pass over the abutments 5, from one end of the slot to the other, thus permitting the stud to be inserted and removed. This spring is preferably. formed separate from the cord guide, as this enables heavier stock to be used for the cord guide, a light spring stock being difficult-to bend into a cord guide without breaking. Therefore, I provide a U-shaped leaf spring 10, one end of which is rigidly secured to the upper end of the cord guide when the stud 8 is fixed thereto, preferably the end of the stud being riveted over the attached spring clip. The opposite arm of the spring is provided with an aperture through which the rear end of the stud 8 is inserted before riveting. This aperture is sufiicient to allow the spring arm to move backand forth upon the shank of the stud. The action of the spring is to normally extend the cord guide rearwardly and, therefore, move the head 9 of the stud rearwardly. Consequently, as will be seen from Fig. 2
of the drawings, when the head of the stud is inserted in the enlarged end of the'slot 4 and moved downwardly, its under face will engage the raised abutments 5. As the stud is moved still farther downwardly, the spring 10 will be compressed permitting the stud to pass over the abutments to the position below the abutments shown in Fig. 2. In this position the parts are detachably interlocked, as the head of the stud lies in line with the abutment and may not pass upwardly thereover except the spring 10 be compressed by hand and the stud intentionally moved. The pressure of this spring is amply suflicient under ordinary. circumstances to prevent accidental unlocking.
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: j Y
1. In combination, two separable parts, one comprising a plate having a key-hole slot therein, an abutment on said plate at each side of said slot, and adjacent to the middle portion thereof, the other member comprising a plate shaped to form a curved tubular bearing at its lower end, a stud rigidly connected to the upper end thereof, the diameter of the stud head being greater than the narrower portion of the key-hole slot and sufficiently great to engage the abutments at opposite sides thereof, and a spring located between said stud head and the upper part of the second member to which the stud is attached, said spring operating to draw the back of the stud head against the front face of the first member when said parts are attached.
2. In combination, two separable parts, one comprising a plate having a key-hole slot therein, an abutment on said plate at each side of said slot, and adjacent to the middle portion thereof, the other member comprising a plate shaped to form a curved tubular bearing at its lower end, a stud rigidly connected to the upper end thereof, the diameter of the stud head being greater than the narrower portion of the key-hole slot and sufliciently great to engage the abutments at opposite sides thereof, and a spring located between said stud head and the upper part of the second member to which the stud is attached, said spring operating to draw the back of the stud head against the front face of the first member when said parts are attached, said spring stud and second mentioned plate being rigidly united at a common point.
8. In combination, two separable parts, one comprising a plate having a key-hole slot therein, an abutment on said plate at each side of said slot and adjacent the middle portion thereof, the other member comprising a plate shaped to form a curved cord hearing at its lower end, a stud rigidly connected to the upper part thereof and projecting forwardly therefrom, the diameter of the stud head being greater than the narrower portion of the key-hole slot, and a spring located between the stud head and that part of the second member to which the stud is attached, said first mentioned plate being arranged to occupy the space between said spring and said stud head when the parts are assembled, said abutments offering resistance to the attachment and detachment of said separable parts.
