To all whom it may concern Be it known that LlVARnnN J. Sonnmxnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middlctown, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shipping- Crates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates tocertain improveinents in shipping crates, and an object of the invention is to provide a novel and 1mproved device of this general character capable of being compacted, when not in use,

to occupy awninimum of space and which -vice is renderedsimpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a view in perspective of a shipping crate, constructed in accordance wlth an embodiment of my invention, adjusted into an operative position; Fig. 2 is a view in plan of my improved device adjusted into compacted form; Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of the device as disclosed in Fig. 2;'

Fig. 42 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view taken through Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 of Fig. l; and Fig. 6 is an end elevational view of the device when adjusted into operative condition.

As herein embodied, my improved crate or receptacle comprises two substantially duplicate sections A-A and each of said sections comprises a plurality of panels 1, herein set forth as four innumber, hingedly connected, as at 2, along their longitudinal marginal portions wherebythe same may be Specification of Letters Patent. medium of the transversely disposed straps,- et positioned at opposite sides thereof In practice, I find it of advantage tohave the spaces between adjacent strips 3 substantially equal to 'tlie transverse diameters of the strips so that the strips ofthe sections i may be arranged in inter-engagement so that said sections may be adjusted longitudinally of the strips 1 relative to the other in order to varythe length of the crate or receptacle, as is believed to be self-evident, the inner straps 4.- serving to limit the relative outward movement of the sections A-A.

The opposite ends of the sections A are open and coacting with the outer end of each of thesectlons 1s a door or closure member 5 adapted to snugly fit within the open outer end of the section when adjusted into applied position and hingedly engaged, as at 6, with, an outer strap 4 ofone of the panels and having a hasp 6 or other looking medium coacting with the outer strap 4; of a diametrically opposed panel 1, as is believed to be clearly shown in the accompanying drawings. Intermediate strips 3 of opposed panels 1 of one of the sections are provided with the longitudinally disposed spaced recesses or pockets 7 produced in the outer faces thereof adapted to receive the inwardly disposed angular extremity 8 of an elongated spring member 9 anchored at one extremity to an outer strap at the inner end of the second section A whereby it will be readily perceived that the sections A will be efiectively locked in their various lengths or longitudinal adjustments, it being understood that the strap provided with the spring is provided with an opening 10 adapted to register with the recesses or pockets 7, hereinbcfore referred to.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be; obvious that a shipping crate constructedxin accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled. and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.

I claim: i

A shipping crate comprising substantially I telescoping sections capable of longitudinal movement, one relative to the other each of said sections comprising hingedly connected panels adapted to be folded laterally into compact form,; end members hinged at one side to one of the panels and adapted to be folded inwardly, one of said. sections being provided with a series of longitudinally disposed recesses, and a spring member carried by the second section and provided with a laterally projected end adapted to be received within'the recesses of the first named section. to retain said sections in relative adjusted positions.
