ORSON H. WILLARD, OF COTTAGE GROVE, OREGON.
DOOR SECURER, HOLDER, OR FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1915.
Application filed March 11, 1915. Serial No. 13,612.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORSON H. WILLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cottage Grove, in the county of Lane and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Door Securer, Holder, or Fastener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful safety door lock or latch, and an object of the invention is to provide a latch or look. of this nature, which when used in connection with a door and its frame, the same will act as proof against burglary.
One of the features of the invention is the provision of a suitable plate having a toothed flange adapted to be inserted between the door frame and the edge of the door, and having pivoted thereto an angular abutment plate designed to be thrown to engage the face of the door adjacent its edge to prevent opening of the same from the exterior.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of cooperative means between the body plate and the angular abutment plate, to hold the abutment plate in different adjusted positions to prevent the abutment plate from becoming displaced from undue jarring of the door, and to further assist in this regard the abutting lateral portion of the angular plate is formed with a curved cam surface having teeth to engage the face of the door.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings z-Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a door showing the improved device as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing how the toothed flange embeds in the frame of the door and illustrating the means to hold the abutment plate in position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the latch removed. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a portion of the body plate 1 and a portion of the abutment plate 5, showing the interengaging means 9 and 10.
Referring more especially to the drawings, l designates a body plate, which may be of any suitable configuration, but which in the present instance is illustrated triangu lar in contour, and at its larger end an angular flange 2 is formed provided with teeth 3, which are caused to embed into the door frame between the door and the frame when the door is closed. Pivotally mounted at 3 adjacent the apex end of the body plate is an abutment plate 5, the pivot in this instance being a riveted pivot. a spring being located between one'head of the pivot and the abutment plate to hold the abutment plate operatively adjacent the body plate. The abutment plate is provided with a lateral portion at its free end designated by the numeral 6, and one of its faces is constructed with a curved cam surface 7 having teeth 8 to engage the outer face of the door to assist in holding the cam plate in position. The adjacent faces of the cam plate and the body plate are provided with interengaging means 9 and 10, the engaging means 9 being a protuberance on the abutment plate and the engaging means 10 on the body plate being a depression. These interengaging means further assist in holding the abutment plate in different adjusted positions, the spring of the pivot acting to yield when the abutment plate is moved when the protuberance is thrown from engagement with one depression intoengagement with another.
The invention having been set forth, what claimed as new and useful is 1. A door securer comprising a body plate having a lateral flange at one end, said flange being formed with teeth and designed to engage the door jamb, an abutment plate pivoted to the other end of the body plate and provided with a lateral flange at its free end extending in opposite direction to the disposition of the flange of the body plate, and designed to engage the interior surface of the door, said lateral flange of the abutment plate being provided with curved cam surface and provided with teeth where it engages the door face, the adjacent faces of the abutment plate and the body plate having interengaging protrusions and depressions to hold the abutment plate in different adjusted positions, said pivot having yielding means to permit the abutment plate to yield when moved.
2; A door securer comprising a body plate having a lateral flange at one end aving teeth designed to engage the door jamb, an abutment plate pivoted to the other end of the body plate and provided With a lateral flange at its free end extending in the opposite'direction to the disposition of'the flange of the body plate and being curved concentrically With its pivot, said curved lateral flange having serrations designed to engage the interior surface of the door, said body plate having a plurality of depressions arranged concentrically about the pivot of the abutment plate, said abutment plate having a pair of lugs designed to engage any tWo opposite depressions to hold Conies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
