HARRY J. MITCHELL, or wILiannmNe, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOY;
Application filed October 27, 1913.
To all "IUZIOH'L it may concern lie it known that I, HARRY J. B Irrcr-rnnn, a citizen of the United Stat-es, residing at iVilmerding, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the followin is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved toy, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a toy which will afford amusement and which can be used as an advertising novelty.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a. toy of the character described in which there is provided a pivotally-mounted figure and spring-controlled means for causing the figure to be knocked from a standing to a sitting position.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a figure which will be yieldably held in a standing position and to also provide a signal which will be operated when the figure is knocked down.
This invention is illustrated in the ac companying drawings wherein- Figure l is an elevation of the improved toy with one end portion of the barrel shown in section; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the manner of mounting the figure; and Fig. 8 is an elevation of the plate through which the head of the figure projects when the figure is 1n a standing position.
This toy comprises a barrel 10 which has a plate 11 secured to its inner end by means of rivets 12 which pass through the neck 13 of the plate. It is, of course, obvious that this plate can be secured to the barrel by any other suitable means, it simply being desired to rigidl connect the plate with the barrel. A. plate 14: which is provided with an opening 15 is rigidly mounted upon the base plate 11 with its securing lug 16 pass ing through an opening formed in the base plate. Pivot ears 17 are carried by the base plate to the rear of the plate 14; so that a cross bar 18 which is provided with sleeves 19 may be pivotally mounted upon the pin 20 which is carried by the pivot ears 17. A spiral spring 21 is mounted upon the pin 20 between the sleeves 19 and has one end portion 22 engaging the base plate 11 and its other end portion engaging the plate 18. It will thus be seen that the figure which is carried by the plate 18 will be normally Specification of Letters Patent.

held in a standing position. A signal, such as a bell 25, is mounted upon the base plate to the rear of the figure and it will thus be seen that when the figure is knocked down, the bell will be rung. The figure 24 is formed as shown in Fig. 1 so that when standing, the head of the figure will extend through the opening 15 in the plate 14. This figure is intended to represent a man standing behind a wall having an opening formed therein after the manner in which the negro stands in the game Hit the coon. A plunger 26 is slidably mounted in the barrel 10 and is provided at its outer end with a head 2'? and its inner end with a pin 28 which forms an abutment for one end of a spring 29 coiled about theinner end portion This spring 29 engages the inner end of the barrel and it will thus be seen that when the plunger is pulled outwardly as shown in Fig. 1 and then released, the spring will cause the plunger to move toward the plate l-l so that its inner end will strike the head of the figure and drive this figure from a standing position to the position indicated in dotted lines. This will cause the bell to ring and the spring 21 will then return the figure to the standing position.
What is claimed is:
1. A toy of the character described com prising a barrel, and base plate carried by said barrel, an tip-standing perforated plate carried by said base plate and having its opening formed in alinement with said barrel, .a figure pivotally connected with said base plate, means for yieldably holding said figure in a standing position with its head extending through the opening of said per forated plate, a signal carried by said base plate and operated by said figure being moved to a sitting position, and means carried by said barrel for striking the head of said figure to drive said figure to a sitting position.
2. A toy of the character described comprising a barrel, a base plate carried by said barrel, a perforated tip-standing plate carried by said base plate, pivot ears carried by said base plate to the rear of said up-standing plate, a pivot pin carried by said pivot ears and a cross bar pivotally connected with said pivot pin, a spring mounted upon said pivot pin and having one end portion engaging said base plate and its other end portion engaging said cross bar for yieldably holding said cross bar in a normal position, a figure carried by said cross bar with its head extending through the opening of said upstanding plate when said cross bar is in a normal position, a signal carried by said base plate to the rear of said figure, and means carried by said barrel" for striking said figure to knock the same out of a normal position and into engagement with said signal to operate the same. I
3. A toy of the character described comprising a base plate, a perforated upstanding plate carried by said base plate, a figure pivotally connected with said base plate, means for yieldably holding said figure in a normal position with its head extending through the opening of said upstanding plate, a barrel carried by said base plate in alinement with the opening of said Lip-standing plate, a plunger slidably mounted in said barrel, an abutment carried by the inner end portion of said plunger, a spring carried by said plunger between said abutment and the inner end of said barrel, and'means for drawing said plunger through said barrel against the tension of its spring whereby when said plunger is released, the spring will cause its inner end to be thrown into engagement with the head of said figure. I I
4. A toy of the character described comprising a base plate, perforated plate carried by said base plate, a signal carried by said base plate, a figure pivotally connected with said base plate, means for. yieldably holding said figure in an upright position with its upper end portion extending forwardly through the perforation of said perforated plate, and means for striking said figure from an upright position to a seated position in contact with said signal.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
