Description

F. H. WILLIAMS & R. B. BENNETT.
MECHANICAL TOY.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 28.1915- 1 1 82, 1 26. Patented May 9, 1916.
3513 th i abhozmz 5 UNITED-STATES PATENT oi me FRED n. WILLIAMS Ann ROBERT B. BENNETT, orinnwennon, NEW some MECHANICAL ToY.
To aZZ w/wm itmay concern: v I i Be it known thatwe, FRED li /VILLIAMS and ROBERT; B."BENNETT," citizens of the United States, and residing at Newburgh, in
the county of Orange and State of New i and with this and other. objectsinview the invention, consists in, a device of the class specified, constructed and operating as here inafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed'in the followingspe'cification, of which the accompanying drawing .forms a part, in which the separate parts of, our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which y Figure '1 is a sectional side view of" our complete apparatus indicating the operation; Fig. 2a partial transverse section on the 1ine 22 of Fig. 1; Fig.3 a plan view of a part of theconstruction shownin Fig. 1; and, Fig. 4: a partial section on the line 4.& of Fig. 1,. showing the trigger device which we employ. I a a I I In Fig. l of the drawing, we have shown at a a main baseboard or supporton one end portion of which is pivoted a cannon device 7) provided with a plunger b operated in one direction by an elastic member If. Pivoted to the rear end portion of the cannon b is a trigger device bfljone end portion 7) of which is adapted to engage a notchor re cess b in the front end portion of the plunger device Z1 The pivotal support of the cannon device Z) consists of amain pin rotatably mounted in a block b secured to the baseboard a in any desired manner, and a smaller pin 5 is passed through the pin 5 and the cannon b, and this pivotal construction permits both a vertical and horizontal movement of the cannon b.
Hinged to the end portion of the baseboard a opposite the cannon b at c is a transverse plate 0 to thetop face of which i i specification of Letters Patent. 7 v Application filed July 28, 1915; Serial No. 42,312.
Patented May a, rare.
arepivoted at cl a pluralityof figures (Z representing soldiers, in the accompanying drawing, and pivoted inwardly of the plate 'mounted in linewith thecircular head 6* of the rocker device 6 and adapted to engage therewith, as indicated .in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The yoke f is operated by the usual spring construction f4. 3
Atarget device 9 is pivoted to the base a at g and provided at its free end with a square face 9 and said target device 9 is provided with a projecting member 9* which is adapted to engage the free end portion of the yoke device 7' to hold it in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, said target device being adapted to release the said yoke device so that the spring f* thereof willoperate said yoke so as to throw it into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1, said target device being released from said yoke by a projectile h dischargedfroin the cannon b, as will be readily understood.
Supported adjacent to the rocker device a is a vertical standard 2' adapted tosupport aroll of detonated cap tape 2' the end portion of which is placed on the face of the circular head 6 of the rocker device (2 so that one or more caps will lie on said face and, in the operation of the yoke device f,'or when said yoke device is released from its full line position by the target device 9 and thrown into its dotted line position by the spring f the circular plate f will strike the circular head 0 with the cap tape there on thereby producing an explosion at which timethe head 6 of the rocker device 6 raises the free edge portion of the plate 0 so as to throw the figures (Z backwardly, as indicated in. dotted lines in Fig. 1. In other words, when a projectile is discharged from the cannon b and strikes the target device 9, the yoke device it is released and strikes one end of the rocker device 6 and produces an explosion by reason of the cap tape 6 and the other end is raised so as to knock down pulled, back to the limit of its outward move- 7 ment and the trigger-"device 6* is set, after which the cannon is sighted and the trigger device operated to release the plunger.
Our invention is not limited to the exact details of construction herein shown and described, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described our lnvention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Let V terse Patent, is If 1. In a device of the class described, a baseboard, amovable cannon device supported at one end thereof and adapted to dis charge a projectile, a plurality of figures pivotally supported on atransverse plate pivoted to the opposite endportion of said baseboard, said transverse plate being operated by a rocker device pivoted to said base board, and a spring-operated device adapted to be held in operative position by a target device, said spring-operated device being released by said projectile striking the said target device whereby said spring-operated device will strike said rocker device so as to raise said transverse plate and knock-down said figures.
2. In a device of the class described, a baseboard, a movable cannon device supported at one end thereof and adapted to discharge .a projectile, a plurality of figures pivotally supported on a transverse plate pivoted to the opposite end portion of said baseboard, said transverse plate being operated by a rocker device pivoted to said base board and a spring-operated device adapted to be held in operative position by a target device, said spring-operated device being released by said projectile striking the said target device whereby said spring-operated tion thereof 'andnormally held in an upright position, a spring-operated device adapted to be released by a'projectile discharged from said cannon device, and means mounted between the spring-operated device and the movable members for throwing said movable members backwardly. 1
4. In a device of the class described, a baseboard, a movable cannon device mounted over one end portion of'said board, movable members on the opposite end portion thereof and normally held in an upright position,a spring-operated device adapted to be released by a projectiledischarged from said cannon device, means mounted between the spring-operated device and the movable members for throwing said movable mem bers backwardly, and a detonating member operated by said spring-operated device and said means.
5. In a device of the class described, a baseboard, a movable cannon device mounted on one end portion thereof, a plurality of" movable figures mounted'on the opposite end portion thereof, a spring-operated device adapted to be released by a projectile discharged from said cannon device, means operated by the spring-operated device for throwing said figures backwardly, and a detonating device operated by the spring-operated device and said means.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 26 day of July, 1915.
