. 1 Improvement in Wash-Boards. No. 115,416; Paremedwlay 30,1871.
NITED STATE-s PATENT FEIOE HARTWELL R; RELLOws', OE BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,416, dated May 30, 1871.
I, HARTwELL E. BELLOws, of Brooklyn, Kings`county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Wash-Board, of which the followin gis a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in corrugating .the face of a washboard longitudinally in such manner that there shallbe two convex surfaces with. a dat valley between them, .the object of this construction of the face of the washeboard being for the purpose of obtaining a more` forcible friction of the article being washed by means of convex surfaces, on
" which the hands of the laundress will natural-v ly rest, while the dirty water and suds, on be- `ing expressed from the article being washed,
will find its way into the. valley or flat recess, be carried off,fal1ing to the bottom of the washtub, and not suffered to mingle with the subsequent supply of Water taken up with the article on being vimmersed on the surface of the water in the tub, by means of which a `more thorough cleansing of the article bein g' washed is eii'ected in a shorter space of time and with less labor thanwith washboards in ordinary use, as I will further explain by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which#- Figure 1 is a front view of the wash-board, Fig. 2, a longitudinal section; and Fig. 3, a transverse section, showing the raised or convex surfaces and the waste-water valley.
` In the said drawing, A indicates the frame of the wash-board 5 B, the corrugated face of saidl wash-board, which may be of zinc, wood, or other appropriate material; '0, the transverse corrugations; and D, the longitudinal corrugations, of which E E are the raised or convex surfaces, on which the operator, with both hands, rubs the article being washed. F is the flat valley between the said convex surfaces for carrying off the dirty water and suds expressed from the washing; and G G are lface-boards for preventing contact of the arti# cle being washed or the iin gers of the operator with the edges of the ends of the wash-board. I do not claim constructing the face of a wash-board with laterally-depressed and centrallyraised corrugations, for such are not new. Nor do I claim a wash-board with double corrugations'crossing each other; but
` What I claim asl my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement, in combination, of the single lateral convex surfaces E E, central de pression F in the middle, and the plane faces Gr Gr at the ends of the wash-board face B, for
the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 26th day of April, 1871.
