ENTTEE STATES PATENT OFFTOE.
JOAB STANFIELD AND STEPHEN O. STANFIELD, OF ORANGE, CALTFORNIA.
LANTERN-HOLDER.
Application filed April 29, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, JoAB STANFIELD and STEPHEN O. STANFIELD, citizens of the United States, residing at Orange, in the county of Orange and State of Oalifornla, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lantern-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holders for lanterns and is more particularly adapted for use in orchards and in connection with irrigating ditches so that lanterns can be secured to the ground in any desired spots; and 1t consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front view of a lantern holder constructed according to this invention, and showing the retaining bar open. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
The lanterns are of'any approved make, and the holder is proportioned to suit the various standard makes of lanterns. The frame 2 of the holder is formed of a piece of stout wire or a rod having at its middle part a loop 3 which forms a handle at the top of the holder for carrying it and the lantern. The upper portion of the holder which forms the loop has two parallel side portions l, and below them it has side, portions 5 which are spaced wider apart than the side portions 4 and which are connected to them by curved portions 6. The parts 1, 5 and 6, are proportioned and arranged to suit the contour of the chimney and body portions of the lantern to be supported. The wire is bent horizontally at the bottom ends of the side portions 5 to form a crossbar 7 upon which the lantern is adapted to rest, and the end portions of the wire are twisted to form a coil or fastening loop 8 at the middle part of the crossbar. One end portion 9 of the wire is extended vertically from the coil or fastening loop to form a spike which terminates in a point 10.
A curved bar 12 is secured to the lower parts of the side portions 5 of the frame, its ends having coils 14 which encircle the side portions 5 or being secured to them in any other approved way. A curved retaining Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 21, 1915.
Serial No. 24,717.
A link 20 is provided at the upper part of the frame, and is proportioned so as to engage with the lantern chimney and to slide vertically on the upper side portions 4 of the frame. The link has guide portions 21 at its ends which engage with the parts 4:, and at its middle it has a bail-shaped crosspiece 22 adapted to rest on top of the chimney of the lantern.
The holders and lanterns are carried about from place to place, and the pointed spikes 9 are forced into the ground in any desired positions or spots so as to hold the lanterns stationary. The frame may have a forked spike, as shown, for engaging with the ground, or a single spike may be used if desired.
What we claim is:
1. A lantern holder comprising a wire frame having at its bottom a crossbar and a spike for engaging with the ground, said frame having also a loop at its top, means for retaining the upper part of a lantern in the said loop, and curved bars connected to the lower part of the frame and adapted to retain the lantern on the crossbar.
2. A lantern holder comprising a Wire frame having at its bottom a crossbar and a spike for engaging with the ground, said frame having also at its top a loop and parallel side portions, a link having guides slidable vertically on the said side portions and having a crosspiece at its middle part and being adapted to engage with the upper part of a lantern, and curved bars connected to the lower part of the frame and adapted to retain the lantern on the crossbar.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
J OAB STANFIELD. STEPHEN O. STANFIELD.
