HANDLE FOR PAPER BOXES.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, T AwnnNon D. MonToN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of hio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Handles for Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

It is the object of the invention to obtain a construction of handle for use on paper boxes and cartons which is adapted to be quickly applied and which will distribute the stress so as to avoid tearing of the paper.

ln the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the manner of engaging the handle with the box or carton; Fig 2 is a cross section through the wall of the box to which the handle is secured; Fig. 3 is a cross section through the fastener for the handle; and F ig. a is a longitudinal section therethrough.

A is a strap or tape formed of suitable fabric or other flexible material. B are fasteners secured to the opposite ends of said tape which are adapted to be inserted through slits C formed in the wall D of a paper box or carton. rlie fasteners B are in the form of comparatively thin flat plates, and are so attached to the handle A that the latter extends from the central portion of one side of the plate. Thus whenstress is placed upon the handle, the flat side of the plate B will be drawn against the face of the paper wall, distributing the stress over a considerable area and preventing the tearing of the paper.

The fastener B is preferably constructed as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, in which E is central member formed of thin sheet metal around which the end of the tape A is wrapped. F is a surrounding member also formed of sheet metal and folded to embrace the member E, with the opposite edges of the fold meeting at the center of the plate and forming a slit for the outwardly-extending portion of the tape. rlhe ends of the member E are then bent or folded at G over the ends of the folded member F, and the several plies are pressed into close proximity to each other. Thus the tape can be securely clamped between the members E and F and will extend out through the central portion of the slit. rihis leaves a bearing portion at both sides of the tape and extending for a Specification of Letters Patent.

considerable distance beyond the edges of the tape, as shown in Fig. 4.

In use, the member B may be readily inserted through a slit in the paper box, drawing the tape through with it, after which the tape is drawn back to hold said member E in contact with the .face of the paper wall. In this position the longitudinal dimension of the member B is parallel to the slit and extends beyond each end of the latter so as to form a bearing upon the unslittedfportion of the paper as well as upon the portions on opposite sides of the slit.

Vhat I claim as my invention is l. An attachable handle for paper cartons and similar articles, comprising a ilexible tape or strap, and a fiat member secured to the end of the tape adapted for insertion through a slit in the wall of the carton to draw the tape therethrough, said member being of lesser width and greater length thanthe slit and centrally attached to said trpe to form a bearing surrounding the s it.

2. An attachable handle for paper cartons and similar articles, comprising a flexible tape or strap, and flat member attached to the end of said tape adapted for insertion through a slit in the paper wall, said member being of lesser width and greater length than the slit and the attachment of the tape thereto being in the central longitudinal plane thereof.

3. An attachable handle for cartons and similar articles.l comprising a flexible tape or strap and a member in the form of thin iiat plate, to which said strap is attached in the central longitudinal plane thereof, said member being insertible through a slit iin the paper wall, and when a tension is placed on said strap, forming a bearing surrounding said slit and extending beyond the opposite ends thereof.

An attachable handle for paper cartons, comprising a flexible tape or strap and flexible tape or strap and a member at- "il-0 tached to the end of said tape'oomprsing aV core member about the center of whichY the tape s Wrapped and a member folded about said core and clamping the tape thereto, forming a central slit for the outward passage of the tape, and the ends of said core member being folded over the ends of the outer member.
