To all whom, it may contra m Be it known that I, DANlEL M. Ro'rHuN- BERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ivlausoleums, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to mausoleums, and my general object is to provide an improved multiple-crypt structure which will combine with provision for convenient and satisfactory operation and maintenance and for suitable emotional effects, a complete sanitary arrangement; the latter involving provision for independently ventilating and draining each separate crypt, as well as. for cutting off from all of them such exterior or interior communication as might cause harmful effects either to the entombed bodies or to those who attend at interments.

The several features of the invention are fully described in connection with the'accompanying drawings and are specifically pointedout in the claims.

Figure 1 is a partly sectional plan view of a complete mausoleum embodyingmy invention in preferred form. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a partial side elevation, partly in section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4' is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view similar to Fig. 2 showing detail construction of the crypts. Fig. 5 is a rear view, in direction of arrow 5, Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section, on the line 6--6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 shows a slightly modified arrangement of the sealing receptacles. v

The preferred form of complete structure which is indicated in the drawings as em bodying my invention, comprises an ar rangement of individual crypts 10 in two parallel series of tiers, a a. a a and a a a al which are separated by a vertical ventilation space 11 formed between the-adjacent rear crypt walls 12, 12; a foundation 13, of concrete or the like, upon which said tiers of crypts are erected, with a ventilation space 15 under the latter having communication with the atmosphere through grated and screened lateral. openings 16, 16 and a roof 18 forming a ventilation space 19 above the crypts which is provided with similarly grated and screened lateral open- Specification of Letters Patent.

The roof 18, as shown, extends beyond the front walls of the crypts, and is carried upon series of columns 25, so as to form covered porticos 26, 26 along the crypt fronts. In order that the front of each crypt of the structure may be freely exposed to the atmosphere and yet be made conveniently accessible from a common reception point, as well as to produce a suitable esthetic effect, I preferably arrange this porticoed crypt structure in bent or curved form around an inner open area 30 (Fig. 1) upon which the tiers of crypts o a a a front, and to which access is provided he tween the continuous ends of the crypt structure; said open area, as indicated, having erected thereon a separate chapel structure, 31, whereby proper and convenient ptilization of the crypt structure is provided The several tiers of each parallel series of crypts a a a a or a a a a are built up from the impervious concrete foundation 13, upon partition walls 35, 35, 35 rising between adjacent vertical series of crypts'10, with the rear crypt wall 12, the bottom crypt floor 36 above the air space 15, the top crypt cover 37 below the roof covered air space 19. and the intermediate series of crypt floors 38, 38, 38, 38, formed as an integral structure of concrete or other impervious material. Each crypt floor is slightly inclined downward from. the front wall 39 toward the rear wall 12 of the crypts; which fronts are separately closed and sealed when interments'are made, as hereinafter specificallv described.

The atmospheric openings 16 and 16 to the lower ventilation space 15, and 20 and 20 to the upper ventilation space 19, are covered by fine screens 40 and gratings 41 adapted to eXcludeanimal life or harmful material while permitting requisite circulation of air through said spaces and the communicating vertical ventilation space 11 at the rear of the crypts; and chemical receptacles 42 or like traps are provided adjacent each of said openings to further safeguard the same.

An essential requirement to the securing of satisfactory sanitary conditions involves the provision also of effective means for thoroughly ventilating .and draining each of the crypts independently, for avoiding .all communication -between the .crypts whether occupied ornotso as to efiectively prevent contamination of the dead or the living either by the spread of disease germs from the interred bodies or the introduction of harmful exterior life or matter vinany form. To accomplish this I provide inconnection with a general exterior ventilation system such as already described, ,a series of vertical conduits '50, 50, 50, 50;for, each verticalseries of crypts: Said conduits being preferablyprovidedin the rear wall struc- 'ture 12 as indicated, and extending verspecial conduitthus provided for each single crypt, serves the latter exclusively as both ayentilating anddraining means; the

The chapel structure 31 provided in the centralarea 30 is entirely separate from the inclosing crypt structure, the adjacent ends 29 of which'latter are spread so as to pro-' vide access to the chapel, the open space surrounding it, and the inner crypt corridor, so that attendants at interments are at all times free from inclosurein the crypt structure; and the open crypt in which an interment is aboutto be made is absolutely free from communication with any of the closed crypts. The grouping of crypts is at alltimes thoroughly ventilated and perfectly protected from exterior harm; and each crypt is similarly protected, and at the same time independently ventilated and drained and effectively cut olf from communic ation with other crypts.

1.' A.mausoleum having crypts arranged in tiers and provided with exterior ventilating spaces above, below, and in the rear of the tiers; the rear wall of thetiers having independent conduits one for each crypt,

each crypt having a sloping floor and a drain opening in-the plane thereof leading into its respective conduit and a ventilating open ng n the upper portion of 1ts rear wall also leading into the same conduit means at the lower end vand means at the upper endof said conduits to contain disinfect ant,-said means being open to the surunding, spaces.

2. Ina mausoleum, a foundation, a roofed structure, crypt tiers between and spaced from the' foundation and roof .to provide ,ventilating spaces communicating with the outcr atmosphere, said crypttiers being in parallel series with a ventilating passage way' between their rear walls, disinfectant containing receptacles open at'their upper ends and arrangedon the rear walls of said tiers and within. the intermediate ventilating passageway, disinfectant containing receptacles adjacent the upper walls of said tiers, the rear, walls of-said tiers havingindependent ventilating and draining conduits one for each tier, and said conduits opening into the bottom portions of .said rec pt s sjln testimonywhereof I aflix my signature in presence .of two witnesses.
