Specification of Letters Patent. Paigeliftedr 091;, l5, gl,v
Application lectober 22, 1914. Serial No. 867,953.
To aZZuwm tracy concern.' stant ventilation of all the unused-crypts, 55Y
Be it known that I, DANIEL M. Ro'rHEN- proper independent ventilation of eachcrypt BERGER, a citizen of the United States, vreafter interment therein, and the final sealing siding at Reading, in thevcounty of Berks of lsuch used crypts. n To provide for satisand Statev of Pennsylvania, have invented factorily securin-g .these results each crypt is certain` new and useful Improvements in provided with a` separate Ventilating outlet Mausoleums, of which the following is a or conduit affording communication between specification. said crypt and the common ventilating My invention relates to mausoleums, and spaces; said conduits as 30, 30?", 309, prefer'- particularly to improved means for indeably extending from each crypt through 'the pendently Ventilating, draining, and sealing wall 12 of the crypt to the upper Ventilating 65 crypts combined therein after they have been space 19 as shown, and being in free commuput into use. nication with thelatter so longv as the con- 'Ilhe invention is fully described in connected crypts are unused. Upon interment nection with the accompanying drawings y of a body in any crypt however it is imporand the novel features are specifically pointtant that special means should be provided 70 ed out in the claims. in connection therewith whereby the prod- Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of a mauucts of decomposition will be separately soleum structure embodying my invention. taken care iof and said crypt be effectively Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional View of the same. isolated. To accomplish this end I provide Fig. r3 is an enlarged partial section similar a terminal attachment 40 for the Ventilating 75 to Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section on the line L1--4 conduits 30, 30, or 30b leading from said of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a section on the line crypt to the Vcommon Ventilating space, 5-5 of Fig. L1; Fig. 6 indicates a modificathrough which attachment the gases rising tion. from said crypt are discharged only after The mausoleum structure indicated as emthey have been subjected to the disinfecting bodying my invention comprises a grouping action of suitable chemicals provided thereof individual crypts 10 in two parallel series in. To fully accomplish the purpose had of tiers, a, a, a, a, and a a a. a, which are in view this attachment forms a receptacle separated by a vertical ventilation space 11 in which are contained a disinfectant such formed between the adjacent rear crypt as formaldehyde or crystals of carbolic acid, A walls 12, 12; a foundation 13, of concrete or indicated by reference characters 35, and a the like, upon which the two series of supersuperposed sealing element 36 such as lime; posed crypts are erected, with a ventilation the former being adapted to neutralize disspace 15 under the latter having communicacharging gases for a sufficient period of tion with the atmosphere through grated time, and the latter to thereafter displace it and screened lateral openings 16, 16a; and and serve as a means of sealing the crypt. a roof 18 forming an upper ventilation space Ordinary cement may be substituted for the 19 with lateral openings 20, 20a. IThis ventilime 35. In order however that the used lation space 19, in connection with the verticrypt may be properly ventilated during cal space 11, serves all of the crypts. The this period of timepreceding the sealing of latter face outward upon parallel porticos it as described, it is necessary that separate which conveniently communicate, as shown, provision be made for taking care of seepwith an interposed chapel structure 21; and age from the interred body; and for this each vertical series of crypts is formed bepurpose I'employ a chemical-charged seeptween vertical partition walls 25, 25, a rear ageV receptacle 45, so placed upon the inwall 12, and crypt floors 26,26, all combined clined flo-or of the crypt that the seepage in an integral structure. Each crypt floor will drain into it and be absorbed and neuis slightly inclined downward from the tralized at the same time that the dischargfront of the crypt, which latter is separately ing gases are being cared for as previously f closed and sealed as indicated after interdescribed.
ment has been made.
My invention relates particularly to the improved means employed for insuring con- My inventionthus provides in a very simple manner for insuring common ventilation of the unused crypts, and independent ventilation drainage and sealing of each indiyidual crypt after it has been put into serv- 1ce.
The construction which is specifically shown and described may be modified without departing from the invention as indicated in Fig. 6 where the Ventilating outlets or conduits 80@ from each crypt, connect directly with the vertical ventilation space 1l, in which the latter terminal attachments 40a are located as the respective crypts are put into service.
What I claim is:
l. A mausoleum having a crypt provided with a Ventilating conduit, a receptacle having inlet and outlet openings, a disinfectant means and a. plastic self-hardening sealing means contained within said receptacle and supported upon the disinfectant means, said inlet opening communicating with said conduit and said outlet opening being arranged to allow of the escape of the utilized disinectant with the neutralized gases upon a plane below the sealing means and without passing through said sealing means whereby, when the disinfectant is dissipated, the sealing means will fall and close the openings of the receptacle.
2. A mausoleum having a crypt provided with a Ventilating conduit, a receptacle hav-Y ing inlet and outlet openings, a disinfectant means and a plastic self-hardening sealing means contained within said receptacle and supported'upon the disinfectant means, said inlet opening communicating with said conduit, and said inlet and outlet openings being in horizontal alinement practically in continuation of each other, providing for the escape of the utilized disinfectant, with the neutralized gases, without passing through the sealing means, whereby, when the disinectant is dissipated, the sealing means will fall and close the openings of the receptacle.
3. A mausoleum having a crypt provided with a Ventilating conduit, a receptacle having inlet and outlet openings the former in communication with said conduit, a disinfecting element in said receptacle through which the gases escaping from said conduit must pass, and a plastic element supported upon the disinecting element and adapted to fall when the disinfecting element is dissipated to effect final sealing of said inlet and outlet openings.
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
