ANTHONY SAUNDERS MORRIS, OF HAVERFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
PRESS.
Application filed February 6, 1915.
To all whom it may concern: 7 7
Be it known that I, ANTHONY SAUNDERS IVIORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haverford, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Presses, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to presses for extracting liquids from solids, as in treating garbage, and my primary object is to provide such presses with improved drainage means. 7
In pressing liquids from large masses of solid matter, it has been proposed to cover drainage channels of cylinders, gates and rams with perforated plates for retainingthe solid While passing the liquid matter, but it is diificult to punch in plates holes of smaller diameter than the thickness of the metal, such plates are ditficult to shape and cannot be fitted readily to the required relations, the difiiculties involved in effecting necessary removals and replacements are considerable, and the cost of construction and replacements involves objectionable ex pense, a broken or damaged part being replaced at considerable cost and with considerable dificulty.
In my invention, parallel bars with slots between them are connected together by rings in sections which are readily fitted together in correct position and easily removed or changed, while the cost of construction and repairs is comparatively small.
The characteristic features of my improvements are fully set forth in the following description and the accompanying drawings in illustration thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the end of a press constructed in accordance with my improvements; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same showing the interior construction of the head gate; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a broken ring section with bars secured thereto in accordance with my invention; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal view showing a broken section of a press cylinder provided with my improved drainage means; Fig. 5 is a broken transverse sectional view illustrating a modified form of my improvements; and Fig. 6 is a broken view illustrating further details of construction.
The mechanism, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises the press cylinder 1 Specification of Letters Patent.
llatcnted Sept. 14, 1915. Serial No. 6,444.
provided with the circular channels 1 intersected by the longitudinal bottom channel l; the head gate 2 provided with circular drainage channels 2 intersected by the channels 2; the ducts 8, 3 and 3 through which the channels are drained;
and the ram 4 provided with circular draining the vertical bars 8 havingtheir ends fixed to ring segments 9 seated in the circular groove 10, these bars bearing directly on the gate and being separated by narrow spaces 8 such as to prevent the passage of solid matter while passing the expressed liquid to the channels 2 and 2".
The ram is covered by a screen comprising the bars 11 disposed vertically and fixed to ring sections 12 which fit in the circular groove 13 in or adjacent to the periphery of the ram, against which the bars hear, these bars being so spaced as to prevent the passage of the solid matter while passing the expressed liquid, which drains into the channels 4 and 4.
It will be evident that the construction may be variously modified. The bars may be rectangular in cross section as in case of the bars 5, and secured in position by screws 14 passed therethrough, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Bars 5 may be used, having the transverse forms of trapeziums and secured in inverted positions to the ring sections 6 by the screws 14 and in Fig. 5. Screws 14 may be set in the ring sections 6 between the bars 5 and the latter fixed in place by the screw heads, as in Fig. 6. In practice, for the treatment of garbage, the bars or strips are suitably approximately 1 g wide and spaced apart.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination with a press having a cylinder containing drainage channels, of a screen comprising a ring and bars fixed thereto, said bars being separated by spaces communicating with said channels.
separable sections and bars fixed to said sections, said bars extending longitudinally of said cylinder and separated by spaces communicating with said channels.
3. The combination with a press having a cylinder containing circular drainage channels and circular seats, of a sectional screen comprising rings having separable sections in said seats and bars fixed'to said sections, said bars bearing against said cylinder, extendinglongitudinally thereof, and separated by spaces communicating with said channels, 4-. Thecornbina tionwith a press having a head provided with drainage channels, of a screen comprising bearing means seated in said head and bars fixed to said means, said bars being separated by spaces communieating with said channels.- 7
5. The combination with a press having a head provided with drainage channels, of a ring seated in said head, and spaced bars fixed to said ring.
6. The combination with a press having a ram provided with drainage channels, of a screen comprisin bars bearing on said ram and separated by spaces communicating with said channels.
7. The combination with a press having a ram provided with drainage channels and a seat, of a screen comprising a ring in said seat and bars fixed to said ring, said bars being separated by spaces communicating with said channels. 1
8. The combination of a press cylinder and a screen comprising spaced substantially parallel bars supported within said cylinder by the curved wall of the latter. 7
9. The combination with a press cylinder having drainage means of a screen comprising spaced substantially parallel bars extending longitudinally of and supported within said cylinder by the curved wall Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner or Patents,
