v GLP.
To 4all whom t may concern Be it known that I, W'ALTER Rennen, a.
citizen of the United States, and a.- resident 'of overalls,
Another object of the invention is to perinit the use of the clip in conjunction with f In order to accomplish the desired the rule asa scratch gage.
result, use is inade of a casing for the passage of a two-foot rule or similar instrument, the casing having-a flaring mouth for' the convenient entrance of the rule, a side of the Haring mouth serving as an abutment when using :the casing with the rule therein as a scratch gage, the casing having spring tongues at the sides adapted to bear against the sides of the rule and the front ofthe casing having a spring arm adapted to bear against the outside of the pocket to which the clip is applied.
A practical embodiment of the invention is reprewnted in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specilication, in
which similar` characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a fri Lit elevation of the clip; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same as applied to an ordinary two-foot folding rule;
`ig. 3 is a' cross section of the clip on the line 3-3 of Fig. l; Fig. l'is a sectional plan view of the clip as applied to a. rule, the section being on the line Aif---i of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is aredueed it'rontelevation of' the clip as applied to a pocket for holdinga rule; and Fig. 6 is anv edge view of the clipas applied to' a rule and showing the same in position for use as a scratch gage, the two being shown in section.
A casingA of approximately rectangular shape and open at the back -is )rovided with a flaring mouth B for the convenient insertion of an ordinary-two-ootcarpenters rule C or a similar instrument to be held in po- One of the sides of thex sition by the clip. n mouthlB forms an abutment when using the Specification of Letters Patent.
to provide Patented Sept., 7,1915.
scratch gage (see Fig. 6), the side ofthe i mouth then abutting against the edge of the work D with the .point of, a pencil E restf a mark on the Aface of the workv D, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 6.
The front of the casing A is provided with a depending arm F and a spring' isv struck up from the front of the casing A and the said arm F, and thefree end of the tongue G is provided with an inwardly extending knob G adapted to bear lightly on the face of the rule C when using ,the latter in conjunction with the clip as a scratch gage (see Fig. 6). The sides of the casing A are provided with depending arms H and spring tongues l are struck up from the sides of the Casing A and the arms H, andA the said spring' tongues I are curved inwardly near their'free ends so as to'bear against the sides of rule C to securely hold the latter in posi tion in the casing A. When it is desired to use the clip for holding the rule C in the ing on tlieinner end of the rule C, tomake:
pocket .l of an overall, coat, vest or other similar garment K, then the casing A is passed into the pocket lwith the tongue G on .the outside of the pocket so that the knob G bears on the outer surface of the pocket to securely hold the clip in position in the pocket. lt will be noticed that the base of the spring tongue G is close to the mouth B of the casing A so that when the clip is -in position in the pocket only the mouth B projects-on the top of the pocket, so that the user can readily see the mouth when placing the rule C in position in the casing. Then the rule C is in position in the clip at the time the latter is attached to the pocket J then the spring tongues l bear with suiii- 'cient force against the sides of the rule C to prevent the latter from being displaced on the user bending over or otherwise moving the body. The casing A is preferably open at the back, as plainly indicatedin Figs.V 2, 3 and 4, so that the casing is not liable to bind hard on the rule C to allow convenient insertion and removal 'of the rule and without danger of unduly scratching the graduated aces of the rule.
The clip is if'erylsiniple and durable in construction and`can be readily applied to a pocket for fglding a rule, or it can be used in conjunctibnliwith the rule to forni a scratch gage, as above described and shown in Eig. 6.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent:
1. A clip for holding an ordinary rule or like instrument, comprising a casing open at the back and provided With a laringmouth for the ready introduction oan instrument, the casing having depending front and side arms, a front spring tongue struck up from the front of the casing and its front arm, and having its terminal extending inward beyond the inner face of the front, and side a spring tongues struck up from the sides of the casing and the side arms, the said side spring tongues being curved inward near their terminals.
'2. A clip for holding an ordinary rule or like instrument, comprising a casing having a Haring mouth for the convenient insertion of the rule in the casing, side spring tongues on the sides of the casing and adapt-ed to bear against the sides of the rule, and a front.
said spring tongue being adjacent the x'said flaring mouth to hold the latter above the top of the pocket.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
