vented a certain new and useful Hydrocar-- bon-Burner, of which the following is a specification. i I This invention is a hydrocarbon vaporizer and burner, and, more particularly, it is designed as an improvement, in a certain particular, upon the apparatus disclosed in a prior application filed byme on July 8, 1908, SerialNo. 441,818. In the apparatus described in the aforesaid application, steam or air is suppliedunder pressure to a series of jet nozzles from a chamber in communi cation with said nozzles, and jets are projected by these nozzles; into a mixing chamber so that said jets operate to entrain and carry a combustible vapor, (preferably re sulting from the vaporization of'oil brought into contact with a heated surface, such as a vaporizing plate.

I The burner, or as it may be designated, a combined vaporizer and burner, of the class described in the aforesaid applicationis shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by reference to which it Will be seen that said burner consists of a cylinder, A, provided at one end with asubstantially frustoconical head, a, and a vaporizing plate, Said vaporizing plate is provided with a plurality of openings, b, and with a depressionor cavity, Z), (see Fig. 2'). The salient feature of the present invention consists in the employment of means for removing any sediment which may lodge or accumulate in openings, 1), of the vaporizing plate, B, or in the passages of nozzles, F, whereby the steam passage or passages are kept in an open, free and unobstructed conditionso that steam will pass into the chamber of cylinder, A, and the combustible vapor .will be entrained by the steam jets, as Will presently appear.
As shown, the sediment removing means i consists of stems or spindles, G. Said stem is provided at its outer exposed end with a knob or head, h, and this knob is adapted to be grasped by 'cate the stem or, spindle. As shown in Figs.

one for eachnozzle, F, and each stem is supported by the stuffing box in alinement with its nozzle, F. Normally, stems,G, are drawn away from nozzles, F, so that steam will pass freely from pressure chamberye, into.
nozzles, F, but should it become necessary to remove a deposit of sediment from nozzle, F, the attendant presses stem, Gr, inwardly. This operation causes the forward end of stem, G, to pass through nozzle, F, and to eject therefrom any matter or sediment which obstructs the steam passage in said nozzle. Obviously, the openings, 6, in vaporizing plate, B, may also become obstructed by the deposit of sediment, and it is necessary,-therefore, to remove sediment from saidjet openings, 6. The stems employed according to this invention may be forced entirely through jet nozzles, .F, and also through jet openings, 5, thus simultaneously cleaning out the passages of the jet nozzles and the openings, (2, in vaporizing plate, B.

As shown more clearly in Fig. 2 casting, D, is provided with a hub or sleeve, '11, and
into this sleeve is fitted and secured a short tube, I, the inner end of which is positioned opposite to depression, 6, of vaporizing plate, B. The outer end of tube, I, is closed by a head, 2', and to this head is attached one end of the feed pipe, J, thela'tter being adapted to supply fuel, preferably, oil, into tube, 1. Oil is supplied under pressure by pipe, J, and it impinges on the vaporizing plate, B, whereby liquid is vaporized-by contact with said plate, B.
K designates a pipe attached to casting, D, and communicating with chamber, 6, so as to carry off water of condensation which may accumulate in chamber, "6. Pipes J, K, are provided with cocks, j, /0, respectively.
The operation of the apparatus will be,
apparent from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, but it may be described as follows :Steam from any suitable source is supplied to pipe, E, and conveyed thereby to chamber, 6, whereas oil is fed by pipe, J, and projected through tube,.I, in the form of a spray or jet against plate, B. The steam issues from nozzles, .F, in the form 'of jets which are projectedthrough openings, Z), into the mixing chamber of cylinder, A, and the steam jets entrain the vaporized fuel into said mixing chamber. Simultaneously with these operations, air is drawn into the chamber of cylinder, A, and the steam, fuel and air are .commingled in said chamber and burned therein. The combustion thus set up heats the apparatus, and plate, B, thereof and in the operation of said apparatus, plate, B, vaporizes the oil thrown against it, the vaporized oil beingentrained by the jets from nozzles, F, through openings, Z),
into the chamber of cylinder, As previously stated, one or more of the openings, 6, and nozzles, F, either separately while the burner is in operation.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V
1. In a hydrocarbon burner, the combination of means for supplying air thereto and for regulating the quantity of air, an oil chamber, means for supplying oil to the oil. chamber, the forward wall of said oil chamber forming a vaporizing plate, said vaporizing plate having a solid central por tion and an exterior perforated portion, a steam chamber concentric with and surrounding said oil chamber wherebythe oil in the oil chamber may be heated prior to vaporizing it, nozzles leading from said steam chamber and alining with the perforations in the vaporizing chamber, and manually operated means for removing obstructions from said nozzles.
2. In a hydrocarbon burner, the combination of an oil chamber, means for supplying oil to the oil chamber, the forward wall of said oil chamber forming a vaporizing plate, said plate being provided with a plurality of perforations, a steam chamber'substantially concentric with and exterior of said oil chamber whereby the oil in the oil chamber may be heated, nozzles leading from the steam chamber and in alinement with the perforations in the vaporizing plate, manually operated means for removing obstructions from said nozzles and perforations, air supply means for the burner,

In a hydrocarbon burner, the combination of concentric oil and steam'chambers, the forward wall of said oil chamber forming a vaporizing plate and extending in front of the steam chamber, a mixing chamber forwardly of said vaporizing plate, an air inlet to said mixing chamber positioned forwardly of said vaporizing plate, apertures in'said vaporizing plate and leading into said mixing chamber, steam nozzles leading from the steam chamber and in alinement with the apertures in the vaporizing plate, and reciprocating members for cleaning said nozzles and apertures.
