To all whom it may concern V. c L
Be it known that I, NATHAN L. GRIFFIN, citizen of the United States, residing at l/Voodward, in the county of Woodward and Stateof .Oklahoma, havev invented certain new and useful Improvements in PELPElT-g.
Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper clips and has as its object to provide a clip which may be more readily manipulated than the clips now in common use; will be equally as inexpensive to manufacture; and adapted for application to the papers to be held without the exercise of any particular attention or care.
The invention has as one of its objects to provide a clip which may be applied in either one of two positions and in which the gripping fingers are so arranged that when the clip is grasped between the fore and middle fingers and the thumb the fingers.
will be slightly sprung'so as to readily accommodate the sheets to be held.
Another feature of the invention resides in so constructing the clip that its portions at opposite sides of a median line will be of counterpart form so that the clip may be applied either end first with the fingers gripping the leaves throughout the entire length of the fingers.
A further feature of the invention resides in the fact that the general form of the clip is such that its length may be increased if found desirable for the purpose of providing a greater gripping surface, without, however, in any way changing the form of the clip.
In the accompanying drawings: Figures 1, 2, 3 and 5 illustrate the clip applied in a number of different ways; Fig. 4 is, a view in elevation of the clip.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
In the drawings the clip is illustrated as formed from a single length of resilient wire bent so as to provide a number of gripping fingers 1 which are alternately extended in opposite directions and from opposite sides of the clip, the intermediate loops being semi-elliptical and the end loops being elliptical. In forming the fingers l the sides of the intermediate fingers are also the sides of the end fingers and it will be observed the bends forming the clip are I of i even I number sojthatthe free ends of ,the fingers willbe equal in number, at the top and bottom of the clip; Considering the upper and .loWerHe Hds-M of; the; clip has opposite sides thereof it may be stated that the fingers alternately project from opposite sides of the clip and it will be observed that the terminals of the wire of which the clip is formed are returned as indicated at 2 so as to form auxiliary gripping portions or fingers and that the extremities of the returned portions approximately touch the horizontal median line of the clip as indicated by the dotted line ww of Fig. 4. It will furthermore be observed from the drawing that the fingers are of equal length as are also the gripping portions 2 and that regardless of which end of the clip is first applied to the sheet to be held, the fingers lying upon opposite sides of the sheets will grip the same throughout the entire lengths of the fingers and throughout the entire lengths of the terminal portions which are bent to form the gripping portions 2. Furthermore, it will be noted that the gripping portions 2 are located at opposite sides of the horizontal median line ww so that the portions of the clip at the opposite sides of this line are of counterpart form. Furthermore, it will be apparent that the terminal portions of the clip are free or open so that no obstruction whatsoever is offered to the insertion of leaves between one of the fingers and one gripping portion 2 on one side and the other or intermediate finger on the other side.
Referring now to Fig. 1 of the drawing it will be observed that the clip has been ap-' plied in such manner that one of the fingers bears against one side of the sheet or sheets to be held and the gripping portion 2 next adjacent thereto together with the other finger and its adjacent gripping portion bear against the other side of the said sheet or sheets. The clip is applied in substantially the same manner in Fig. 2 of the drawing except'that the finger next adjacent the finger first mentioned in describing the application of the clip in Fig. 1 together with both of the gripping portions 2 bears against the face of the sheet with the finger first mentioned in connection with Fig. 1 bearing against the obverse side of the sheet. In Fig. 3 the clip is applied as in Fig. 2 except in reversed position or more specifically speaking, with its portions which bear side of the sheet in Fig. 1, bearing against the faceof the sheet in' against the obverse Fig. 3 and vice versa.
Having thus described the invention, What:
is claimed as neWis:
A paper clip formed from a length of Wire bent to form semi-elliptical intermedite loops and elliptical end loops, the intermediate loops being of equal number at opposite sides of the horizontal median line of the clip, and the terminal loops also lying at Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
