T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT HOLIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maynard, in the county of Chippewa and State of Minnesota, haveinventedv certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Holders; and I do declare the following to 1 be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in holders for window sashes and proposes a device which acts with strong frictional pressure to securely hold the sash against accidental movement from any desired position and to prevent any rattling thereof yet permits of the ready manual movement of the sash in the ordinary manner and requires no manipulation when the sash is to be moved from one position to another.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a unitary sash holding device of the type described which is structurally independent of the sash and window pane with which it cooperates; which is especially constructed toward the end that it may be so combined with either of thesashes (preferably, however, the upper sash) that its holding or supporting action is common to both of the sashes; which is of simple and inexpensive structural nature and is in no way liable to derangement; and which reliably and certainly discharges the function for which it is designed.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of a window having one of its sashes, preferably the upper sash, equipped with. holders in which the features of the invention are incorporated; Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof, showing both sashes in partly open position; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a sash holder embodying the features of the invention; Fig. 4 is a perspective view thereof, the cover of the holder however, being removed; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cover of the holder, per se; and Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the improved sash holder.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to Figs. 3 to 6, the working parts are completely incased, the housin therefor comprising a body member 1 and a covermember 2. The body member 1 includes a base 3 and front and rear walls 4 and 5 and the cover member 2 includes a horizontal wall 6, opposite to the base 3 and vertical walls 7 which are bridged by the wall 6 and in turn bridge the walls 4 and 5 at the sides of the holder, thereby constituting the side walls of said housing. The base 3 is provided at its ends with projecting coplanar attachment ears 8 and the walls 7 are provided at their ends opposite the wall 6 with out-turned ears 9 which overlie the ears 8.
The ears 8 and 9 are provided with openings 10 for the screws or other devices by which the holder is held to the sash and the said openings 10 are preferably of slotted form to enable such adjustments of the position of the holder, relatively to the sash bar to which it is secured, as the exigencies of use may require.
The operating parts are a plunger 11 extending at a right angle to the walls 4 and 5 and having its forward end formed as a yoke 12 and supporting a sash engaging roller 13 having a transverse axis, the said yoke and roller projecting and working through a suitable opening 14 in the wall 4; a spring 15 which urges the plunger forwardly and preferably surrounds the plunger in the rear of the yoke; a follower 16 which receives the thrust of the spring at its rear end, and is formed with an opening 17 through which the rear end portion of the plunger loosely projects, the plunger being headed at the rear of the follower and being supported by the follower and the front wall 4; and a screw 18 journaled in the walls 4 and 5 and by means of which the follower 16 may be adjusted to vary the tension of the spring 15, the said screw having an externally located operating head 19, preferably adjacent the wall 5, and the said follower having a nut 20 formed therewith and surrounding the screw 18 and being supported by said screw.
The window shown in the drawings includes the usual upper sash A and the lower sash B and said sashes are held against relative movement by a pair of holders cona of said upper sash'in line, with the side bars of the lower sash. The holders are thus arranged externally of the room and are concealed from view, from within the room by the side bars of the lower sash.

It follows from this that either sash will be reliably held against movementfmom any position at which it may be set. Inasmuch, however, as the sashes are not positively locked and the rollers 13 although bearing with strong pressure on the lower sash, do not grip the same, the manual movement of the sashes may be readily effected.
The tension of the spring 15 may be increased or decreased, as the exigencies of use may require by adjusting the follower 1 6 forwardly or rearwardly of the housing through the intermediary of the screw 18 which is conveniently rotated for this par..- poseby t e pp ca i n of a suitabl 1 to its head 19.
The construction is simple, durable and inexpensive and, having its operating parts completely incased, is not substantially ;affected by the elements, even though located, as shown and described, at the outer side of the window,
