' 'Be it known that I, CHARLES H. KLo'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, District of "Columbia, have invented a new and useful Folding Gate for Gangways, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to a folding or foldable gate for gangways, andmore particularly to the gangway at the end of a rail-way car.
It is well known that railway cars are equipped with gates of one type or another for the purpose of closing the gangway of the end car, but so far as I am aware all the gates now in use upon railway cars require removal from the end of the car when they are not used in their extended position for closing the end of the gangway; and if not detached they projectsomewhat into gang way and prove a source of danger to any one passing through.
The object of my invention therefore, is to provide a gate which is contained within a suitable casing, which casing is attached to the end of the car in such position that the gate can be drawn out and fastened across the gangway when desired for use, and can be collapsed or folded up into the case and secured out of the way when not in use.
Another object of the invention is to construct a gate of this character in such a manner that it can be quickly and easily removed for the purpose of making any repairs that may become necessary.
l/Vith these objects in view the invention consists in the novelties of construction, combination and arrangement, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification Figure 1 is a view showing the practical application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the case with a portion of the gate shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section. Fig. 4k is a sectional elevation illustrating means for fastening the gate in its extended position.
In the practical embodiment of my invention I employ a metallic case A, which is preferably made of pressed steel and provided with upper and lower extensions A by means of which it is fastened to the end B of the car at one side of the gangway, and it will be understood that this box or casing is between the end of the car and the diaphragm carried by said car and to which the, accordion is connected.
The top and bottom and outer side-of the box or case are closed thus leaving the side adjacent the gangway open, and in this opened side is pivoted a channel bar C which serves as the top rail of the gate when the same is open, and which is of a length equal to the width of the gangway.
The gate is of the lazytong type and com prises a rod D located in the casing A adjacent the outer end, t1e upper end of this red being turned down and seated in a recess in the top of the casing as shown at D. The lower end has a machine screw D passed upwardly through the bottom of case to hold the rod D in its proper position, but which permits of its ready removal whenever it is desired to make any repairs.
The upper collar E is clamped tightly upon the rod I), but the lower collar F slides freely. The lazytong stripes Gare pivoted to the collars E and F and to each other as shown and the outer ends are connected to the collars H and I respectively, carried by the rod K which is preferably flat as shown and the collar H is fastened to the rod while the collar I slides thereon. The rod K also has a suitable handle K by means of which the gate can be opened or closed. The collars H and I are also pro vided with extensions H and I which enter suitable sockets located upon the opposite side of the gangway.
In order to hold the gate locked in its extended position I arrange a catch L upon the upper end of the rod K and which is adapted to be engaged by a spring pressed bolt M carried in a suitable housing upon the interior of the channel bar C and having a suitable finger piece M extending through a slot in the bar C, for the purpose of disengaging the bolt from the catch. This bolt is also adapted to engage a keeper N located in the bottom of the casing A, so that after the gate has been folded and placed in the easing the bar C can be turned down and locked in engagement with the keeper and thereby securely close the casing and provide a smooth surface for that side of the gangway.
In operation the bolt M is detached from the keeper N and the bar C is moved up to a horizontal position. The handle K is then grasped and the lazytong gate pulled out or extended, and the bolt M brought into tending entirely across the gangway of the When not in use the bolt M is detached from the catch L and the gate is folded and pushed back entirely into the casing A and the channel bar C is then turned down to close the inner side of case and hold the gate within the casing.
It will thus be seen that I provide a gate for the end of a car and which is attached to the car at a point where it will not be in the way at any time, which gate can be pulled out and fastened whenever it is desired to close the gangway, and pushed back and closed up when it is not desired for such use.
A gate having these advantageous features avoids the necessity of detaching the gate and storing it away when not in use as is the case with end gates as at present constructed.
While the invention herein shown has been described as particularly adapted for use in connection with railway cars it will of course be understood that it can be used anywhere for the purpose of temporarily closing a gangway or passage.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the kind described, a casing, a lazy tong gate mounted within said casing and adapted to be moved out of and into the same, a bar hinged to said casing and adapted to close said casing when the lazy tong gate is contained therein, the outer end of said gate being provided with means for engaging the outer end of the bar Copies of this patent may be obtained for when said gate-and bar are openwhereby said gate and bar are maintained in thelr opened posltions.
2. In a device of the kind described, a casing, a lazy tong gate mountedtherein and adapted to be moved in and out of the same, a bar hinged to the casingat one end and provided with means at the opposite end for ing said casing when the gate is folded therein, said gate being provided with means at its outer end for engaging the bar when said being movable out of'the casing, a spring' actuated bolt carried at the free end of the hinged side, a catch carried at theupper end of gate, and a keeper arranged in the bottom of the casing, said catch and keeper being adapted for engagement with the spring actuated bolt.

A foldable gate for gangways comprising a casing, a rod detachably mounted therein, a lazytong gate connected to said rod, a vertically movable side hinged to the upper end of said casing, a spring actuated bolt carried at the free end of said side, a catch arranged at the upper end of the lazytong gate, and a keeper arranged in the bottom of the casing, said spring bolt being provided with means for disengaging the same from the catch or keeper as set forth.
