JAMES KNOX POLK BINGAMAN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
PAPER cannon.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 117, 1915.
Application filed April 28, 1915. Serial No. 24,449.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES KNOX POLK BINGAMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of '2210 Fulton ave- I nue, Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, (post-oflice address Vine and Sixth streets, Cincinnati, in thecounty of Hamilton and State of Ohio,) have inventit has for its object the improvement of such paper cartons whereby they are simplified and rendered more efficient in action.
The novelty of my invention consists in the combination and sub-combination of the parts as will be hereinafter set forth and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents the blank from which my improved box is made, the dotted lines in said figure indicating the points at whichthe blank will be creased in forming the box." Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box when folded together and locked with my improved lock.
The material which I employ for making I this box consists of card, straw, or paste board. The blank shown in Fig. 1 is composed of card or paste board. This blank is scored, as indicated, so as to form the cover flaps and the main end flaps of the box. The dotted lines, which indicate the points at which the blank Will be creased in forming the box, also serve in Fig. 1 to space ofl the blank into the several parts of the box, which said parts are as follows, A
' indicates the bottom; B B the sides; 0 the four corner and end flaps; D the main outer end flaps; E E the two inner cover flaps and F F the outer cover flaps. The blank is further formed with slits or catches G on the four corner and end flaps C and with slits or catches E on the two inner cover flaps, E E, also slits or catches F on the 4 two outer cover flaps F F. I
Particular attention is called to the form of my catches which are L-shaped. This form insuresa very positive locking catch. In forming the box shown in Fig. 2 from tlns blank the sides B are turned up on the lines G and. brought at right angles to the bottom A. The corner flaps C are then turnedinward on the lines I until they stand at right angles to the sides B, thereby perfecting the corners and also forming the inner portions of the ends of the box when the locking catches C are engaged. The
two inner cover flaps E E are turned down on the lines H H forming a right angle with the sides B B, when the locking catches -E E are engaged. The ends D are turned up on the lines K and broug t at right angles to the bottom A, so as 0 form the outer Walls or portions of the box ends. The outer cover flaps F are turned down on the lines L until they rest on top of the inner cover flaps E when the catches F are engaged.
What I claim as my invention is;
1. A carton made from a single blank of flexible material cut and scored to form the bottom, cover and sides, end flaps on said sides, said flaps being slit at an angle of 45 from one angle of each flap and the slits con tinued at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the box forming interlocking end members, inner cover flaps on said sides with L-shaped slits for locking the same together, end flaps on said bottom, and extensions on said end flaps having L-shaped slits for interlocking the same. I
2. A carton made from a single blank of flexi'ble material and scored to form a bottom, cover and sides, the sides being provided with end flaps each having an angled slit extending from one corner thereof to provide means for interlocking the end flaps and the carton having inner cover flaps each provided with an angularly-disposed interlocking slit, and outer cover flaps provided with angularly-disposed interlocking slits extending from the end edges thereof.
