STAY-STRIP.
Specification of Letters Patent. i Patented Aug.. il?, llflllfq Application filed January 27, 1913. l
To all Iwhom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. CROWELL,
a citizen of the United States, residing atV Swampscott, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stay-Strips, of which the following is a specification, *reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a prepared stay strip for application to box corners and the' as by a corner staying machine, and also toA insure its firmly adhering to the said corner. Stay strip as now used in corner staying machines is frequently prepared by markingor indenting it along a central line for the purpose of causing it to be fed evenly onto the box corner. There are various methods of thus marking stay strip and some of these are effective for this purpose. No stay strip .is produced, however so far as known to me, which is not only effectively marked but which also has 4had all the resiliency removed along the line of fold. B resiliency is meant the tendency which t e strip Y has` when folded over the corner to lift off andreturn to or assume itsflat condition. One of the largest uses of corner stay strip is its application to box corners by means of a corner staying machine. the gummed stay strip is moistened as it is fed forward through the machine just prior to its being placed on the corner of a box; and it is then subjected when in position to momentary pressure between a fixed die and a movable die in the manner well known to those skilledin the art. A stay strip, the adhesive surface of which is subjected for only a very brief time to moisture'and which is then applied to a box corner and given merely a moment of pressure to force it into contact with the box corner, will lift away from the box corner by reason of its resiliency before the adhesive has had an opportunity to secure it in place.
The object of my invention 1s a prepared noted.
In this case Serial No. 744,308.
stay strip to avoid the objections above The invention will be fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof are pointed out and clearly defined in the claim at the close of this specification. v
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a View in perspective of a roll of stay strip from which my improved stay strip is made. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of a section of stay strip in folded position. Fig. 3 is a View in perspective of a roll of my improved stay strip.
Referring to the drawings A designates a roll of flat stay strip made in the well known manner from paper, cloth or the like, and preferably having one surface thereof gummed. The Hat stri-p designated B is folded upon itself as shown in Fig. 2, bringing the edges together, and so that the Vtwo faces 1 and 2 of the strip are in contact. Thus folded the strip is subjected' to pressure and especially along the line of fold C. This fractures the adhesive coating along said line, as also any sizing or the like which may be in the material of which the strip is composed. The strip is then flattened out by unfolding it and may be rewound into a roll and is ready for use. If one folding and pressing operation is not sufficient to remove all resiliency from the line of fold the strip may be reversely folded and again pressed, and in the case of a strip made from very'intractable material it may be again reversely folded and subjected to a third pressing, the object being to take away all stiffness from the line of fold so that the material along that line will be limpand when the strip is placed on ak box corner the two halves will be simply hinged together but with no tendency whatever to revert to a fiat condition, that is to come into the same plane.
A stay strip thus prepared may be rewound intoa roll, kept for an indefinite period and when used will feed evenly onto a box Acorner and although coated with a quick moistening adhesive having a minimum of adhesive quality, may bevsecurely applied to the corner of a box or the like by being subjected to a single pressure of the pressing die in the stay machine.
What I claim is:
The improved stay strip comprising a IUE strip of gummed tape having a median In testimony Whereqf I aix my signature, bending line, the gum alng said median 1n presence of two Witnesses.
bending line being fractured and the tape CHARLES H. CROWELL. along said line being rendered pliable to Witnesses: 5 form -a bending line from which the natural WILLIAM A. MACLEOD,
resiliency has been removed. v ALICE H. MORRISON.
