To all whom it may concern I Be it-known that I, HARRY S. KUH a citizen of the United States, residingat Naynesboro, in the county of Franklin and t'ate of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Pipe-Vise, of which the followingis a specification. I r The present invention relates to improve-v ments in a pipe vise, one; object of the pres-f ent invention, being'the provision of novel means whereby the movable jaw may be lockedin any adj'ustm'enhby the simple mas nipulation of a pawl lock and a cam for actnating the same, the said pawl being adjustable relatively to the cam to permit of the desired quick action of the cam in moving the same into locking relation, the same being released by a spring.
Av furtherlobjectof the present invention, is the provision of a pipe vise provided with a: plurality of gripping members which are readily insertible within the respective aws, each gripping member being composed .of two'sections instead" of made in a single member as is the usual practice.
A still further object of the invention, is the provision of means for. adjusting the movablejaw of the vise, including primarily 'aremovable toothed "ibar, in combination with a frame slidable" thereupon which carries a spring released pawl, a manuallycontrolled cam being provided to operate the pawl in looking relation. f a With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the inventionresides in the combination and arrangement of parts and inthe details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment 'ofthe invention'herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed withutdeparting from the spirit of the invention.

This pawl 20 is provided with the adjusting screw 21, and .withthe cylindrical support 27. frame 29 is the pawl 20*,- which is constructtwo parallel arms 22. These arms 22 fit astride of the cam 23,-which is rotatably mounted in the member 17 so as to abut the arms 22 and the screw 21, to operate the pawl 20 in opposition to its spring 24, which normally engages the lug 25 to hold the pawl 20 out of engagement with the bar 16. A sliding pin or bar 26 is employed to rotate the cam 23.

In the construction in Figs. 7, 8 and 9, the cylindrical rod 27 which constitutes the support for the sliding frame 28, and for the adjustable jaw carrying frame 29, is provided. The adjustable frame 29 carries the fixed jaw 30 while in order that the member 28 may lee-adjusted upon the support 27, theupper end of the support 27 is provided with screw threads 31, which cooperate with the threads 32 of the operating cap 33 which in turn is operated by the bar 34. The cap 33 is provided with the flange 35 which cooperates with the mutilated rim 36 of the member-28, which permits the cap 33 to be rotated and yet be fixed to the member 28. 'As the member 27 is permitted a slight sliding movement through the member 28, it will be seen that the same may be adjusted to a slight degree upon the member 28. Adjustably held by the screws 37 within the sleeve 38, is the cylindrical portion 15 of the bar 16, said bar 16 being threaded through the slidable frame 39, which carries the adjustable jaw 40, and the sleeve 41, which is slidably mounted upon the Carried in the 7 ed and operated similarly to the pawl 20 heretofore described. It will thus be seen that by the manipulation of the handles 26 and 26 of the respective jaw vises, the ad justable jaws J and 40 may be readily locked in the desired adjustmentrelatively to the fixed jaws J and 30, such action being exceedingly quick. The handle 26 is limited in its releasing relation by means of the clip 42.
In-the construction of grippingmembers as illustrated in Figs. 10, 11 and 12, the two sectional members 43 and 43 are employed,-the same fitting .within the respective sockets 44 of the jaw and being provided with the conicalrecesses 45 by means of which the screws carried by the respective jaws may engage and thus lock the same against outward displacement.
By making the gripping members 43 and 43 in sections instead of in a single member as is the usual practice, and seating them as illustrated in Fig. 10, within the recess of the jaw, it is apparent that the same may be readily removed for replacing, either as an entirety or in sections.
' What is claimed is 1. A. pipe vise, including a frame, a-statoothed bar, manually controlled means for V actuating the pawl to engage the bar and lock the movable jaw member in adjusted position, and cooperable means carried by the pawl and the manually controlled-means for adjusting the relative portion of the pawl and manually controlled means to regulate the action ofthepawl.
2. A pipe vise, including a frame, a stationary and a movable jaw member carried thereby, a pipe gripping jaw mounted in each member, means for adjusting the movable jaw member relatively to the'stationary jaw member, a toothed bar carried by the movablejaw member, an auxiliary frame surrounding the toothed bar, a spring released pawl mounted in the auxiliary frame andnormally outof. engagement with the toothed bar, manually controlled means for actuating the pawl to engage the bar and lock the movable jaw member in adjusted position, said pawl being provided with two spaced lugs, and a manually operated cam mounted in the auxiliary frame and disposed between thespaced lugs of the pawl,
whereby as the cam is operated, thepawl is moved in opposition to the spring.

whereby as the cam is operated, the pawl is moved in opposition to the spring, and
adjustable means carried by the pawl for tionary and a movable jaw member carried thereby a pipe gripping jaw mounted in each member, means for adjusting the movable jaw member relatively to the stationary jaw member, a toothed bar carried by the movable jaw member, an auxiliary frame surroundmg the toothed bar, a sprlng released pawl mounted in the auxillary frame and normally out of engagement with the toothed bar, manually controlled means for actuating the pawl to engage the bar and lock the movable jaw in adjusted position, said pawl being provided with two spaced lugs, a manually operated cam-mounted in the auxiliary frame and disposed between the spaced lugs of the pawl, whereby as the cam is operated,the pawl is moved inopposition to the spring, and a screw adjustably mounted within the pawl between the arms thereof for engagement with the cam to regulate the cooperative action between the cam and pawl.
