sion of a lock for an extensible window screen by means of which the window screen may be fastened when the same is extended to any width.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a lock for window screens which may be applied to or disengaged from an extensible screen.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevational view of my device, partly in section, showing the same applied to use; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, partly in section; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 ofFig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail view showing the block having a threaded recess therein mounted in the inner section of the lock.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the letter A designates an extensible screen of the usual construction, which consists of two overlapping sections 1 and 2, the outer corners of the sections having metallic braces 3 connected thereto. The letter B designates generally my improvedlock for extensible window screens, the lock consisting of two tubular telescoping sections 4 and 5. Secured at its opposite ends to the end bar of the section 1 of the screen is a vertically disposed hinge plate 6 which is offset inwardly intermediate of its ends, the central portion of the offset portion of the plate being dished outwardly as at 7 to provide a seat for the ball terminal 8 of a cap 9 mounted on the outer end of the section 4 of the lock. To hingedly connect the section 4 to the hinge plate a spring finger 10 extends inwardly and upwardly from the offset portion of the plate, the upwardly extending portionof thefinger being arranged parallel with the dished portion 70f the length of the dished portion 7 of the plate,
it is necessary to spring the finger inwardly to space the same from the hinge plate so that the finger may be engaged through the opening 11 in the ball terminal whereupon the outer portion of the ball 8 is held within the dished portion 7 of the hinge plate, so that accidental disengagement of the section 4 of the look from thescreen will be prevented.
The inner section 4 telescopes within the outer section 5 of the lock and mounted on the outer end of the outer section 5 is a cap 12 which is provided with a notched head 13, the head 13 being adapted to engage the brace 3 on the corner of the section 2 of the screen. Formed in the inner section 4 is a longitudinal slot 14 which terminates closely adjacent to the ends of the section, and formed in the section 5 adjacent its inner end is an opening 15 which is adapted to register with the slot 14 in the inner section. A block 16 is loosely mounted within the inner section 4, the block being. of substantially the same diameter as the diameter of the bore of the inner section, so that the periphery of the block closely engages the inner wall of the inner section. ner section and the opening 15 in the outer section. A spacing plate 18 is mounted on the periphery of the outer section 5, the plate 18 having an opening registering with the opening 15, and disposed through the registering opening 15 and the slot 14 into engagement in the threaded recess 17 is the threaded shank of a thumb screw 19 which when screwed down tight serves to bind the walls of the sections 4 and 5 against each other to hold the sections in any desired extended position.
In the practical use of my device, the lock is normally carried by one section of the screen on the hinge plate 6, and when the screen has been adjusted to extend entirely outer section, and upon tightening of the thumb screw 19 the walls of the tubular section are bound against each other to lock the screen in adjusted position. When it is desired to remove the screen from the window, it is merely necessary to loosen the thumb screw so that the length of the screen may be reduced, the tubular sections of the lock being automatically telescoped as the sections of the screen are moved inwardly upon each other. As the lock is mounted against the inner face of the screen, it will be seen that it is impossible to remove the screen from the window from the outside without cutting the wire of the screen, whereby the locked screen serves as an eflicient barrier to prevent undesired entrance through a Window. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a screen consisting of two slidably connected sections, of a lock including a pair of telescoping members adapted to be disposed between the end members of the screen sections, means for securing the telescoping members in adjusted position, a notched head carried by the outer end oi one of the telescoping members, said notched head being adapted to embrace the end member of one of the screen sections, a ball member carried by the outer end of the other telescoping member and provided with sections, of a locking device including a pair of telescoping members, means for securing the members in adjusted relation, a notched head carried by the outer end of the first telescoping member, said notched head being adapted to embrace the end member of the first screen section, a ball carried the outer end of the second telescoping member and provided with a transverse bore, a hinge plate secured to the end member of thesecond screen section, said hinge plate being provided with a concave seat adapted to partially receive the ball, and a spring finger carried by the hinge plate to seat in the bore of the ball for holding the ball in the seat of the hinge plate, said finger passing freely through the ball, whereby the same is pivotally mounted upon the hinge plate.
