a resident of West Pittsburg', inthe county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Forming-Dies, of which the follow-v ing is a specification.
This inventionrelates to dies forformmg orshapmg sheet metal articles.
The object of the. invention is to provide dies for this purpose by means of which the articles can be very accurately shaped or formed, which are adjustable so as to adapt them-for forming similar articles of different sizes, in which the various -parts of the die are formed in separate pieces 'so that each'can be accurately shaped, and dies in which' the wearingparts can be readily replaced when worn.
Another object of the invention is to pro- Lvide an improved holding and stripping de- 'vice which maybe readily adjusted for dif- "ferent sizes and shapes of' article and in .which the wearing parts may be readily re-` placed when worn.
In the drawings the invention is sho-wnA embodied in di'es for forming sections of sheet metal radiators, but obviously the principle of vconstruction of the dies may be adapted for forming various articles.

'Fhe dies illustrated are' adapted to be actuated by any suitable press, the bottom die being suitably secured to the frame or bed plate of the press and the top die being I carried by the vertically movable platen or press head. The means for securing thesev dies to the press bed and platen may be varied within wide limits. Both the top and bottom dies are of sectional `or built up construction as hereinafter described.

Each of the end' portions is also provided-substantially. at its longitudinal central line with a -circular depression 10 in which fits a boss l1, being secured therein bytap bolts 12 extendingupwardly through the member 4, and serving to press bosses inv the sheet metal articleat both ends'thereof, such for instance as the pipe connecting bosses of sheet metal radiators. By having these boss 'members 11 removablethey can be readily replacedin case of excessive wear, or when it`is desired to change the height to whichthe boss ispressed out.

The intermediate member" or members comprise a lower or base portion 4a and a .top or face. member 5,these parts being secured together 1n the same manner as the parts 4 and 5 ofthe end sections, namely, by tap bolts 6, and being registered with the end members by means of the stripsror guides 7. The top face of the member 5a of each intermediate section is provided with projections and depressions to match with the configuration ofthe end sections. Surrounding the sections of the bottom die and serving as a means to secure them together, is a suitable frame or ringf7 the same comprising side bars or pieces 20' and end members or pieces 21. T he end pieces or members 2l titbetween the ends of` the side pieces 20, and are provided on their ends with tenons or tongues 22 tting into grooves 23 formed in the inner faces of the side members 20, and Asaid end members are secured in place between the side members by means ot' strong cross bolts 24 extending through holes 25, in thel side members and corresponding holes in the end members.

The end sections 3l are provided on their bottom or working faces with the reversed configurations of the end sections 2 ot" the bottom die, to-wit, with longitudinally. extending depressions 3S corresponding to the projections 8 of the bottom die 2 and intermedia-te elevations 39 corresponding to the depressions 9 of the lower die. r rlhese end sections are also provided with circular seats l0 for receiving the female 'bossing member ll corresponding to male bossing member ll and which.

These end sections are also provided with a seat extending around the embossing or forming portions 38, 39 for re ceiving the wearing members which extend around the outerredge of the dieface, or in other words, form the outer boundary ot' the die face proper. These wearing members comprise a straight end portion 43, curved corner portions 43a and straight longitudinal portions 44, all ot' which are secured to the end section 86 by suitable tap bolts 45. The projecting portions 39 otl tie female die are also preferably formed in separate renewable pieces, being so shown in the drawings and seated in a suitable groove or depression and secured thereto by tap bolts 46.
The intermediate female die members 35 are provided on their working faces with llong itudinal depressions 38 corresponding to the depressions 38 ot' the end sections 3l, and with longitudinally elevated portions 39a corresponding to the portions 39 or' the end section 3l, which portions 39 are also separate wearing bars seated in suitable grooves in members 35 and secured therein byltap bolts 46a.' The Wearing members 44 of the end sections are continued in these intermediate sections, being indicated at 44a,

It is obvious that the particular construction of dies described may be adapted to form pressed articles of a variety of kinds and forms. l
