This invention relates to metal stamping presses of the type having a crank-operated slide, to which the movable die is secured, and objects of this invention are to provide a simple and eilicient guide for the reciprocable slide, which is adapted to maintain accurate alignment of the slide with respect to the work support, and is so constructed as to prevent turning or twisting of the slide with respect to the machine frame; and to provide means for guiding the movement of the slide having increased bearing surface, and is adapted to offer resistance to pressure resulting from the angularity of the crank and connections near the bottom of the working stroke. Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
The invention is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a side elevation of a press en1- bodying the improved construction; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 on Fig. 1.
The illustrated embodiment of the invention comprises a press having an upright frame 1, adjacent the upper portion of which is crank shaft 2 provided with a fly wheel 3. The crank shaft 2 is provided with a central crank which is connected to a vertically reciprocable slide at by a connecting rod 5. The machine frame is provided intermediate its upper and lower extremities with a re cess 6, in which the slide l is movable, and a bolster plate 7 constitutes a work support, on which the stationary die is mounted, it being understood that the movable die is suitably secured to the slide 4 in the usual manner.
In accordance with this invention longitudinal extending guide elements 8 are secured by bolts 9 to the side walls of the re cess 6, and these elements are wedge-shaped with the inclined or tapering surfaces extending inwardly toward the slide 4. The
opposite sides of the slide 4 are formed with substantially V-shaped channels or grooves 10 to receive the tapering sides of the guide elements 8.
It is manifest that with this arrangement more accurate alignment of the slide-4 is effected with respect to the wor k support, and any tendency of the slideto "twist ortur-n is overcome. A further advantage of this arrangement resides in the fact that the oppositelyta-pering surfaces offer increased res stance "to side pressures exerted on I-the slide by the connecting rode-in the angular positions assumed by the latter.

It will be seen that near the inner wall of the recess6 "the slide not only has bearing on the frame, but also an inclin'ed bearing in the -bea'ring element '8 so that the bearing surfaceof the slide is materially increased.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a press of the character described, a frame, a crank-operated slide reciprocablein said frame, a bearing on the frame for a portion of one side of said slide, a substantially V-shaped channel in opposite sides of said slide, Wedge-shaped guide members for said channels, a gib on each side of the frame engaging the adjacent guide member'for'retaining the latter in place.
2. In a press of the character described,
frame, a slide reciprocable in said frame having channelsin opposite sides, substantially 7' wedge-shaped bearing elements on opposite sides of said slide projecting into said channels, bearings on said frame adjacent said elements, gibs on the opposite side of said bearing elements, and a tie plate connecting said gibs for reducing the side play caused by relatively great side pressure on the bearings;

In a press of the character described, a l 7 frame, a slide reciprocable in said frame having channels in opposite sides, substantially wedge-shaped bearing elements on opposite sides of saidslide projecting into said channels, means for detachably connecting said bearing elements to said frame, bearings on said frame adjacent said elements, gibs on the opposite side of said bearing elements, and a tie plate connecting said gibs and integral therewith for reducing the side play caused by relatively great side pressure on thebearlngs.

In a press of the character described, a frame, a slide reciprocable in said frame having substantially V-shapedchannels at opposite sides thereof, a portion of sa-id slidie adj acent each of said V-shaped channels bearing Q against an adjacent part of said frame, and a longitudinally disposed wedge shaped 5 guide member mounted on opposite sides of said frame adj acent said frame-bearing portions of said slide'and fitting the opposite inclined sides respectively of said channels,
