INVENTOR WALTER O. AMSLER, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAS-PRODUCER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1915.
Application filed October 3. 1911. Serial no. 652.529.
To all 107: out it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVALTER O. AMsLER, of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Producers, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is to provide a new and improved gas-producer including a bodily movable grate.
Still further objects of the present invention are to provide a grate for, a gas-producer having a compound vertical and revoluble movementwithin the lower portion of the producer, and simple and eflicient means for imparting a compound bodily movement to the grate.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate applications of my invention, Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view of the lower portion of a producer embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a part plan and a part sectional view. the section being taken on line IIII of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a part elevational view and a part sectional view showing a modified form of grate construction.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the lower portion of theouter metallic casing of r a gas-producer and this casing, as illustrated. ist'ormed with an annular inwardly projecting flange 2 and with an annular de pending flange 3. Casing 1 is designed to be supported upon av housing or casing 4, which housing it rests upon a suitable foundation 5.
(3 designates a metallic shell or ash hopper designed to be supported on the annular flange 2 of casing l. The ash hopper (3 is provided with a water chamber 7 and at its lower end with a series of air openings 8 through which air is suppliedfrom a valve controlled air conduit 9.
Arranged centrally within the lower casing 4 and projecting up into the hopper 6, I provide a bodily movable grate 10. Grate 10, together with an ash plate on plates 11, are adapted to be moved both vertically and rotatively within the casing 4, and the upper portion of the grate within the water cooled shell or ash pit 6.
As illustrated in the form of Fig. 1, grate 10 comprises an irregularly shaped or waved depending flan e 12 formed with a smooth contacting surface 13 and with a toothed or rack portion 14.
The grate is supported and moved by a series of rollers 15, each comprising a toothed portion 16 and asmooth bearing portion 17 adapted to respectively make contact with the toothed and smooth portions of the depending flange 12 of the grate.
18 designates vertically extending supports designed to support the rollers 15. Se cured to the journal of one of the rollers 15 is an operating bar 19 which latter extends through casing 1 and is adapted to receive a crank. not shown, by which the same is revolved. 7
From the above it will be readily apparent that by revolving the operating member 19, a compound vertical and revolublc move ment will be imparted to the g ate thereby accomplishing two desirable results in shaking down the ash and at the same time compacting the ash and fuel within the producer to prevent the formation of direct passages or openings therein through which air would pass.
In the form of Fig. 3, I have shown, in place of the grate of the form of Fig. 1, a flat grate 20. This latter construction, however, is designed to be operated with a compound vertical and rotative movement and in order to accomplish this, I provide the grate with a depending flange 12 of substantially the same construction as shown in the form of Fig. 1, and also provide'operative rollers. 15 of substantially the same form as employed in the form of Fig. 1. Instead of moving the grate by means of the member 19 as shown by Fig. 1, the grate may be moved by means of a bar, not shown, inserted through an opening in the casing 4c and engaging a ing 21 on the grate.
What I claim is:
1. In a gas producer having a vertically movable and revoluble grate, means for imparting movement to the grate including a waved rack, a waved bearing member, and a wheel having a gear cooperating with the rack and a portion cooperating with said bearing member. I
2. In a gas producer, a grate, an ash receiving plate secured to the grate, and means for imparting a compound vertical and revoluble movement to the grate and plate including a depending member on the grate having a waved rack portion and a waved bearing portion. and means coacting with said portions of the depending member.
3. In a gas-producer, a grate, and means for imparting a compound Vertical and revoluble movement to the grate including 3. depending flange having a waved rack portion, a waved smooth portion, and a wheel having a portion coacting with the rack portion and a portion on which the smooth portion of the flange rests.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
WALTER O. AMSLER.
