EDWARD SMITH. or mslsasiqa, annals...
ea s; 1
To all 'wimmit may concern} Be i known that I, EDWARD SMITH, a citi zen'ofthe' United states, and a re'sidentof Kaskaskia, in the county of Randolph and State of Illinois, have invented certain new andus'eful Improvements in Brooders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawg a This invention relates to an improvement in brooders ofthatjclass employing a lamp for heating purposes; and the object ofmy invention is to provide'a device of this general character of a simple and inexpensive nature, and of a compact and durable construction, including a heating chamber capable of being removed and readily replaced, the lid of the chamber serving as a floor for the brooder upon whichis held a layer of earth.
With these and other objects in view, the;
present invention consists in the combination and arrangement-of parts as Wlll be hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the appended claims, it being further understood that changes in the specific structure shown, and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :-Figure 1, shows a perspective view of a brooder embodying my invention. Fig. 2, shows a perspective view of the heating chamber with a lid thereon. Fig. 8, shows a perspective view of the heating chamber with the lid removed. Fig. 4c, is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 5, is a lengthwise sectional view.
In my present invention I provide a brooderin connection with which I employ an earth floor which is capable of being heated, to provide a warm base upon which the chicks run and rest. Thetop of the brooder is provided with a suitable fabric hover,v the heating chamber being capable of being removed, the lid of the chamber serving as the brooder floor.
In carrying out the aim of my invention I employ a frame including the front 1, back 2, and the two similarside members 3, 3. As clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the side members 8, 3 have a groove 4: within the inner face and near the lower edge, while the front 1 has a door 7 secured by means of the Specification l'lettel'si B atant.

hinges 8. Suitable legs- 5 are secured at the cornersfof the frame, whileia top 6 is employed to close the frame, this top as shown,
in Fig. 4. being provided with a suitable febri'c hover A. 'The top 6 further is provided with the ventilating openings at. I
In connectlOil with t e r d ewhich it wardly directed: ledges 12 which extend in opposite directions.
In connection with the heating chamber I employ a lid 13 having the opposite recurved flanges 14 arranged to slide over the ledges 12 these recurved flanges 14 being of a size to snugly slide into the grooves 4.
The lid 13 forms the bottom of the brooder and is covered with a'layer of earth E as shown in Fig. 4 this earth resting upon the lid 13. 'The entire earth layer can be readily removed by simply withdrawing the lid 13'and the heating chamber, in doing which the front 1. serves to scrape off the earth.
As shown in Fig. 4 I employ a suitable lamp L to heat the brooder.
The legs can, if desired, be made detachable, so that the same can be placed in the sheet metal receptacle while being packed and shipped.
A brooder constructed according to my invention is simple and inexpensive in construction and both durable and efficient in operation, and can be readily kept clean, while the several parts can be readily replaced.
Having thus described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A brooder comprising a frame including a front, back and two side members, legs secured to the corners of said frame, each side member having a groove within the inner face and near the lower edge, a top secured to said frame, a sheet metal ventilated housing having openings within its ends and bottom and two outwardly directed ledges, and a sliding lid having opposite recurved flanges to slide over said grooves. V
2. A brooder comprising a frame 1ncludtilated housing having openings Within its curved flanges to slide over said ledges and and a lamp having aflchimney pro ecting 15 throughsaid opening. V
A-brooder comprising a frame includlegsfseeured to the cornersof said frame,
ledges and arranged for co action With'said 7 ing a front, back and two side members," 5 legs secured to the corners of said frame, 7 i each side member having a groove ithin the inner face and nearthe loweredge, a topsecured to said frame, a sheet metal ven- 7 1O ends and bottom and tWo outwardly directed V Iledges, sliding {lid having oppositere arranged for.coo-action:withsaid-grooves,
ing a front, back and; two side members,
each side member having a groove 'vvithin theinner face and near the lower edge, a top secured to said frame, a sheet metal ventilated housing having openings Within'its sides and bottom and .tWo outwardly directed ledges, a sliding lid having opposite recurved flanges to slide over said ledgesand arranged for co action with said grooves, a I
lamp having a chimney projecting through said opening,'and a hover; secured to the ace of said lid.
In testimony whereof I signature, in the presence of twowitnesses."
