Specification of Letters Patent.
ratemea Aug. 3, 1915.,
Application filed October 3, 1914:. Serial No. 864,792.
To all whom it may concern:
ject of the Emperor of Japan, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in earing-Apparel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wearing apparel, especially to sanitary nether garments or drawers, and particularly to improvements in the type of garment disclosed in my Patent #l,083,712, dated January 6, 1914.
The object of this invention is to provide a sanitary garment cut with a configuration so as to be very eflicient when applied and will also elastically fit itself to the person of the wearer to conform with the lines of the body, particularly at the thigh and over the posterior of the hips.
A further object of the invention is to provide a garment of this type with a detachable napkin or towel fastener whereby the napkin may be easily applied and adjusted to suit the fancy or requirements of the individual.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, haying reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective of the garment closed. Fig. 2 is a view of the open garment.
The garment comprises a body 2 with a waist band 3 having a draw string 41. The body has a central, substantially rectangular cutaway portion which extends through the lower edge of the back. The body has fly parts 5-5 which are divergently related from a point below the top edge of the garment. The upper part of the flies 5-5 are provided with fastening means, as buttons 6 and buttonholes 7, while the lower edges of the flies are provided with fasteners 8 for fastening to the lower complementary edges 9 of the cut-away part at the back.
At the back of the body 2 is an appendage 10 secured to the top edge of the cut-away portion and having angular side edges which are spaced from the adjacent edges of the cut-away part and which taper to a point located well below the bottom edge of the back, the inclination of the edges of the appendage corresponding to the inclination of divergently related parts of the flies. The side edges of the appendage are provided with fastening devices 11 complemental to those on the correlative edges of theflies. When the garment is applied andthe lowermost edges of the front flies are fastened about the limbs to the rear edges 9, short legs are formed and are held tight by elastics 12.
lit is very desirable that garments of this type fit snugly and comfortably and, therefore, I have provided concealed elastics, one at the center and up the back at 13 which terminates at the top of the appendage 10, others at 14: which extend angularly upward from the side corners of the appendage,'and still others at 15,'in the front part, which extend upwardly and; angularly from points gntermediate the length of the divergent The material of the body 2 is gathered by the contracted elastic, but when the garment is applied to the person, the garment is filled out and the elastics tensioned; the back elastic drawing the appendage snugly up at the crotch and over the pelvic bone, the angular rear elastics 14 stretching across the posterior side or gluteal structure of the body, while the front elastics 15 stretch up over the pit of the abdomen. Thus the whole cooperate to produce an effective safety garment which is easily made, is commercially practical, and is popular.
Another important feature of this invention is the provision of a detachable towel or napkin and fastening means therefor, the 9 latter comprising a tang 16 attached to the upper part of the back, cross loops 17 and a lower bight or strap 18, one end of which passes through a hole 19 in the end of the appendage, and when the appendage is drawn up in position the end of the bight 18 may be fastened to one or another of the several top buttons in front. A napkin 20 may be pinned at one end to the tang 16 and passed beneath the loops 17 and pinned to the bight 18 inside the appendage. When the latter has been brought up and fastened,
then the outer end of the bight 18 is buttoned to such one of the fly buttons as will draw the napkin up to be comfortable to the wearer in any position she may assume. Covering a large area of the article on the inside is a pliable, soft, liquid-proof sheet 21.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is y In a garment openable from the front and having a vertical series of fasteners for said front, an appendage secured to the garment and having a slot alined with said fasteners, a napkin adjustably secured at one end to the rear of the appendage, a strap having one end secured to the front'of the append age adjacent the slot thereof and having its opposite end passed through the slot and provided with a buttonhole to receive any i of the fasteners, and means to adj ustably secure the other end of the napkin to the strap SUMIYE ,UYEDAF Witnesses:
