To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL GUSTAV THEO- non J ACOBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eveleth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesotafloave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Handles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in wood working tools, and relates particularly to a detachable saw handle.
The invention has for its primary object a simple, durable and eflicient construction of device of this character, the parts of which may be very cheaply manufactured and readily assembled and which may be very quickly applied to and detached from the saw blade. And the invention also aims to generally improve devices of this class so as to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter more fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a portion of a saw having my improved de tachable handle connected to the blade thereof. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the attaching bar. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is a similar view of the device on the line 41 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in all of the views of the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the blade of a saw and 21b6 handle proper, these parts being of any desired construction or design, except as hereinafter noted.
Secured to the upper edge of the handle 2 is an attaching bar 3 which is secured to the handle in any desired way and which is preferably constructed of a single strip of metal extending any desired distance beyond the forward end of the handle. As it leaves the handle 2, the metal out of which this attaching bar is formed is doubled upon itself longitudinally to form a channeled portion 4 designed to receive the upper edge of the saw blade 1, and this channeled portion terminates at the forward extrem+ ity of the bar 3 in a lug 5 which extends laterally from both sides of the channel portion. The channel 6 of the portion l of the attachingbar 3 communicates with a recess 7 which is formed in the handle 2, the said recess being designed to receive one end of the saw blade and secured to the handle 2 and extending across the recess 7 is a stud 8 which is designed to fit within an obliquely disposed notch 9 formed in one end of the blade. The lug 5 is designed to engage a notch 10 in the upper edge of the blade.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my device will be apparent. In the practical use of my improved detachable handle, the handle proper 2 is slipped over one end of the blade 1 and the stud 8 is received in the notch 9 and the channel portion 4: of the attaching bar 8 is extended over and receives the upper edge of the blade 1, the bar being somewhat resilient and the lug 5 is snapped down into the notch 9, whereupon the handle will be securely attached to the blade, or maybe readily detached therefrom when desired. In order to detach the blade, it is only necessary to press upwardly on the laterally disposed lug 5 so as to move it outwardly from the notch 10 and swing the handle to a somewhat oblique position relative to the blade, whereupon the attaching bar will be entirely free from the blade and the handle can be readily withdrawn by slipping the stud .8 out of the notch 9.. While the accompanying drawing illusstrate's. what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in this regard, but that various changes may be made in the details of construction, arrangement and proportions of the parts Without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is: 1. A saw handle having one end formed with a vertically extending kerf adapted to receive the butt end of a saw blade, a stud extending through the handle "and across said kerf, said stud being disposed at the lower end of the kerf, a resilient saw engaging member'mounted upon the upper edge face of the handle and extending in advance thereof and having a downwardly extending lug adjacent its ends, and a saw blade formed on its rear edge with a notch adapted to engage said stud-whenthe rear edge is inserted into the kerf, the handle when the blade is so inserted bearing against the rear edge of the saw below the stud, said blade also having upon its upper edge a notch adapted toreceive a lug formed in the upper edge of the attaching member.
2. ,A saw handle having a vertically extending kerf in one end adapted to receive the rear end of a saw blade, a stud extending through the handle and across said kerf and disposed above the lower end of the kerf, a saw engaging member mounted upon the upper edge'of the handle and'extending in advance thereof, said member being formed of a resilient strip channeled upon its under face to receive the upper edge of a saw blade and being formed at its extremity with a depending lug, and a saw blade formed on its rear edge with a notch adapt ed to engage the stud when the butt end of the saw blade is inserted in the kerfand formed upon its upper edge with a notch adapted to receive said lug. o 3, A saw'comprising a blade formed in its upper edge forward of its butt end with a notch and at its inner end with an upwardly and forwardly extending slot and a handle formed on one'end with a vertically extending kerf whereby it is adapted to be slipped upon the butt end of the blade, a stud extending through the handle and across said kerf and adapted to engage the upper end of said slot whenthe upper edgeof the saw blade is alined with the upper edge of the handle, the butt end of the saw blade engaging with the inner wall of the kerf above andbelow a line extending parallel to the back of the saw. blade and passing through said stud, and a resilient blade engaging member mounted upon the upper end of the handlewand having a forwardly extending portion adapted to engage the upper edge of the blade, said member being provided at its forward extremity with a depending lug insertible within the notch in the upper edge Copies of this patent'may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing Washington, I). 4. A saw comprising a blade, a handle on the blade having a notch formed in its upper end forward of the butt end of the blade, the butt end of the blade being formed with a slot, a handle having a vertically extending kerf adapted to receive the butt end of the blade, a stud extending transversely across the kerf and adapted to engage in the slot in the blade, and a-blade engaging member mounted upon'the upper edge of the handle and extending in advance thereof and having a lug adapted to engage the notch in the upper edge of the blade, formed with lateral flanges extending from the handle to said lug and adapted to embrace the blade along its entire upper edge.

A saw comprising a blade having a notch "in its upper end spaced from the butt end of the blade and. formed at its butt end with an upwardly and forwardly extending slot and av handle formed with a vertically extending kerf adapted to receive the butt end of the blade, the inner wall of the kerf bearing against the rear end of the blade below said slot in the blade, a stud extending through the handle and across said kerf and adapted to engage the upper end of the slot when the butt of the blade is abutted against the rear wall of the kerf, and a resilient'blade engaging member comprisinga strip having a, flat rear portion bearing against the upper end of the handle and attached thereto, the forward portion of the strip extending beyond the handle and being U-shaped in cross section to fit around the upper end of the saw blade, the forward end of the strip having a downwardly extending lug to engage in the notch in the upper end of theblade, the butt end of the blade, when in position in the handle and when the blade is engaged by said strip, bearing against the rear wall of the kerf above and below a line extendingv through the stud and approximately parallel to the back of the blade.
