To all whom it may concern Be it known tha t I, GEORGE I-IILLARD BEN- JAMIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have linvented certain new and useful Improvements in Baskets, of which the following is aA specilication.

My invention relates tobaskets of the type comprising a metallic frame and a exible covering or inclosing material. In practice, such baskets have been made with the metallic iframe carried below the bottom of the flexible covering so as to protect the covering from wear. There has also been provided, a supplemental bottom,y located under the bottom of the lexiblelcovering, and formed of strips of wood or metal, which act to support the bottom of the flexible covering, and also with wooden runners secured to the metallic frame, and adapted to prevent wear of the frame and contact of the metal of the frame, with nails or other inetallie objects, on floors along which baskets are diawii, and which would give rise to sparks, and thus be dangerous in mills where the air is charged with flying materials. In baskets constructed ag described, the supplemental bottoms were frequently bent or broken by throwing heavy articles into the interior of the basket, and further, the wooden runners became worn by use. In practice it has been found ditlicult to repair such 'supplemental 'bottoms or runners, and in order to overcome this difliculty, I provide the basket with av detachable bottom and runners.

The object of my invention, is', therefore, a construction in which the supplemental bottom and runners may7 be readily removed for repair or be substituted by a new bottom and runners.

The accompanying drawings will serve to illustrate my invention, in which- Figure 1 is a. perspective view of the basket as a whole. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section. Fig. 3 is a perspective plan view ot` the detachable bottom and runners, separated from the basket. Fig. 4 is a side view showing a modified device for connecting the central member of the basket traine to the runners. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the detachable bottoni, showing a difierent construction and method of attachment from that disclose# in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a view corresponding to Fig. 2, showing the detachable bottom and runners of Fig. 5 in position. Fig. `7 is a. perspective view of a detachable bottom such as shown in Fig. 3, having a covering of flexible material; and Fig. 8 is aview corresponding to Fig. 4 showing the bottomshown in Fig. 7 in position, and indicating in dotted lines, that when the basket is filled the bottom of the flexible covering will be carried downward and rest upon the top of the bottom shown in Fig. 7.

Referring to the drawings: 10 indicates a metallic frame, which consists of a top member 11, end members 12, and side members 13. The end and side members, 12 and 13, are shown as connected to the top membenby bending the ends of the members around the top member, as illustrated at 14. The end members 12 are carried downward to a distance below the bottom of the basket, and thus forni the bottom members 15. The side members 13 are carried down below the bottom of the basket and across the basket to form the transverse members 16. I

17 represents a flexible covering or enveloping body, which maybe of canvas or any other desirable material.

18 represents strips of Vmaterial which serve to inclose the top, side and end members, betweenthe strips and the inclosing body 17, or in other words, form pockets which inclose all portions of the frame with the exception of the bottom'members 1,5 and transverse members 1G.

20 represents a detachable bottom. In Fig. 3 this bottom is formed of strips of metal, and is made up of the end members 21, longitudinal members 22, diagonal members 23, and transverse member 24, all of which members are secured together by suitable rivets, as for instance, 25. The end members 21 and the transverse member 24, are provided with extensions 26, which may be turned around the bottom members 15, as shown in Fig. 2, and thus serve to secure the detachable bottom ,to the bottom members 15 of the basket frame,` as shown in Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8.

In order to allow the transverse member 24 to include the side member 13, the ends of the extensions 26 are slotted, as show-n at 27. Connected to the two side longitudinal members 22, by bolts, rivets, or otherwise,

are runners 28. In Fig. 5, the end members 21 and transverse'member 24 are not pro-l vided with the extensions 26, but to take the place of such extensions for securing the 'bottom to the frame,adjustable hooks 29 are provided, 'which coact With the bottom basket 17, is shown as depressed and restingupon Ithe top .of the flexible, material 30,

overlying the bottom. The flexible material 30 may bejysaid to have a two-fold purpose;

(l) to act as a support for the bottom of the basket when ressed downward, and (2) to prevent projections in the floor. over which the basketis drawn, from injuring the bottom of the basket.

To apply the detachable bottoml to the basket, the frame is placed over the detachable bottom, and the extensions '26' turned up over the bottom members 15 and transverse members 16. The extensions, of course, may be made of malleable orother suitable metal, Which Will permit .of their being bent .Without fracture. of the detachable bottom shovvn in Fig. 5, the frame is `placed over the bottom, the hooks carried over the bottom members 15 and transverse members 16; the nuts 32 on the bottom of the frame adjusted to secure the bottom firmly to the frame.

In Fig. 4, a casting33 made of malleable ironis arranged to grip the side member 13 and the bottom member 15, and is provided with a projection 34: which is let into a v groove 35 in the runners 28. The object of vthis arrangement is to strengthen the basket and prevent longitudinal movement of the.

In case the basket becomes very badly soaked With Water, and it is desired to dry the bottom of the basket, the detachable bottom and runners may be readily removed, dried and replaced, or in case ofinjury to the detachable bottom or runners, the injured bottom or runners may be readily removed and a new bottom and runners substituted. I. Wish it understood that I do not limit myself in any Wise to the par- 4out in any Wise departing from the intent of my invention. What I Wish to have understood is that I believe that I am the first to describe a basket having a detachable, replaceable, supporting bottom and runners.

In the case Having thus described my invention, I claimz l. The combination in a basket of a supporting frame, a flexible covering, and a supplemental detachable supporting bottom.

3. The combination in a basket of a metallic supporting frame,'a flexible covering adapted to cover all portions of the frame with the exception of the bottom members, a supplemental detachable supporting bottom, and runners.

4. The combination in a basket of a metallic supporting frame, a flexible covering, a supplemental supporting bottom, and means forming a part of said bottom for detachably connecting the bottom to the frame.

5. The combination in a basket, of a supporting frame, a body ofinclosing material, a supplemental bottom consisting of a series of parallel longitudinal strips, angularly disposed strips, and transverse strips, said transverse strips having their ends arranged to be turned over the bottom members of the frame of the basket to secure the supplemental bottom to the frame.

6. A basket comprising a frame formed of a series of members, portions of Which are arranged vertically and portions of which are arranged horizontally, a horizontal member connected to the vertical portion of the first named members, a bottom con? sisting of a series of strips arranged horizontally with certain of said strips arranged to coact With the'members of the frame to detachably connect the bottom to the frame,

and runners connected to the strips, to-

gether with a flexible covering for the frame v frame, a flexible covering for the framel comprising a bag formed of canvas or other flexible material located on the inside of the frame, and strips of flexible material located on the outside of the frame and securing the bag to the frame at the top, sides and end, together with a supplemental detachable supporting bottom.

A basket comprising a supporting frame, a flexible covering for the frame comprising a bag formed of canvas or other flexible Vmaterial located on the inside of the frame, and strips of flexible material located on the'outsde of the frame and securing the bag to the frame :1t the top, sides and end, together with a supplemental detaohable bottom secured to the frame at 5 the bottom thereof.
