ToaZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMERSON B. Mose- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Hinge for Filing Appliances, the same being illustrated and described, but not claimed, in my application for Letters Patent filed June 20,1911,Serial No. 634,268, of which application this is a divisional part, and of which invention the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an appliance specially adapted for filling bills of' sales or accounts, as of a retail merchant, and more particularly to that class of appliances containing a series of frames or leaves normally located uprightly face to face, in a rectangular pack, the'frames being hin ed 0r jointed together at the lower ends, so is at they can be rotated forward to a prone position, face to face, in a rectangular pack, which rotation exposes and gives access to the faces of the several frames.
The object of the invention is to provide a hinged connection between the jointed ends of the frames, which will permit these ends to slightly separate when necessary to accommodate a greater number of bills than can be filed in the normal interval between the frames; and, in the present embodiment, this object is attained by providing a hinge having an intervening link-plate pivoted below to the edge of one frame and above to the face of the adjoining frame, so that the leaves may separate by the swinging of the intervening link-plate on its pivots. Coupled with the expansible joint, thus formed, may be provided one or more expansion springs extending through apertures in the lower ends of the frames to normally hold the same closed together.
The present embodiment of the invention, thus set forth in general terms, is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a lower end view of a pack of frames, showing the jointed ends of the several frames in their normal closed-together relation; Fig. 2, a sectional view of the pack of frames in upright position, showing hinged ends Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawing.
The frames 1, 2 and 3 are preferably made of metal sheets or plates, with the reinforclng side andend strips at and P secured on their faces, which strips serve to stiffen as well as to separate the frame plates, and also constitute a rim within which are formed the recesses 5 in the faces of the frames for receiving the bunches of bills 5 to be filed in the appliance, which are prefeicabl g retained by means of the spring c ips Each hinge between the lower ends of the frames of the pack is composed of the. pivot plates 7 and '7 with the intervening linkplate 8, and the parts are so connected and arranged that the pivot 9 of the plate 7 is located at the edge of frame, and the pivot 9 of the plate 7* is located in the face of the adjoining frame at a substantial distance above the lower edge thereof; and a suitable recess, as 10, is preferably provided in the face of one frame to receive the liiilcplate, so that the frames can be folded closely together.
By this construction and arrangement, it is evident that the jointed ends of the frames may be slightly separated by a swinging of the link-plate upon its pivots, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the endwise movement of the frames with respect to each this swinging, being so slight as to be negligible; and that the frames will thus accommodate themselves to a thicker packof bills than could be filed in the recesses of the frames when the reinforcing side and end strips thereof are in contact with each other.
The joint springs 11 may be provided for normally holding the hinged ends of the frames together, and, springs are preferably in the form of expansion springs, as shown, located in suitable apertures 12 provided in the lower end portions of the these springs are secured to the foremost other, caused by when used, these frames; and the ends of the lower end of one I and rearmost frames, so that the tension of the springs acts to draw the'hinged ends of the frames together, it being evident that the flexibility of frames to be rotated on their hinged joints.

1. A series of frames, joints connecting adjoining frames together along one edge and permitting an oscillation of the frames relative to each other and a bodily separation of two adjacent frames from each other, and means arranged to be placed under'tension when said frames are operated.
2 A series of frames normally located face to face in a rectangular pack, a hinged connection between corresponding ends of the frames including a link plate pivoted at one end to the edge of one frame and at the other end in the face of the adjoining frame at an interval from the corresponding edge thereof, whereby the hinged ends of the frames may be separated by a rotation of the link plate on its pivots, and means connected to the opposite end frames of the series of frames arranged to put under tension when one'or more of said frames are separated.
