FILING APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1915..
Application filed July 30, 1908. Serial No. 446,185.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, EMERSON B. MOSELEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing Appliances, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to filing appliances and more particularly to that class of such devices in which paper or bill carrying frames or leaves are mounted in a portable supporting base that is adapted to be set into a case when the appliance is in use, and to be easily removed from the case, so that only the frames or leaves and their base or support may be placed in a vault or other place for'safe orconvenient storage.
The i'nventionhas for its object to improve appliances of this kind inthe several particulars to be hereinafter pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a filing appliance embodying my improvements, it being represented as mounted in a case, parts of which are shown in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view as seen from above or in front of the base or support in which the bill holding frames or leaves are mounted, the parts of the base being represented in the positions occupied by them when the appliance is in use; Fig. 8 is a View similar to Fig. 2 except that it represents theparts of the base or support closed together and occupying the positions assumed when an appliance is removed from the case and is ready for storage. Fig. 4 is an end view of the support or base whenits parts are in positions indicated in Fig. 3, the leaves or bill frames being represented in this view. Fig. 5 is a view, partly in front elevation and partly in section, illustrating the method of mounting a bill frame. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 66 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a detail view illustrating the method of applying the separating or division strips to the bill carrying frames or leaves. Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view illustrating the method of applying the sepstrips applied to their inner arating or division strips to the bill carrying frames.
In the accompanying drawings, 2 indicates the base portion of a case adapted to receive an appliance embodying my inven tion. The case may be of any suitable construction and need not therefore be illustrated or described in detail. In Fig. 1 of the drawings is represented its rear vertical wall 3, and top 4, which latter is hinged to ahorizontal cross piece 5. Upon the latter is supported a triangular shaped block 6, adapted to serve as a rest or support for the base in which are mounted the hinged bill holding frames or leaves of the appliance. The block or rest 6 is shaped to support the base for a group of paper or bill holding frames or leaves with their upper edges exposed one above the other from front to rear of the series, as is common in devices of this character.
7 indicates as an entirety a paper or bill holding frame or leaf. In its general features of construction it is of a well known 'type, consisting of a'plate 8, preferably of thin metal supported at its lower or hinged edge upon a cross rod or shaft 9, around which the edge of the plate 8 is preferably turned as a ready means of attaching the plate to the rod. The frame is divided into a number of vertical sections by strips 10,
the strips on adjacent frames lying opposite each other, with their edges preferably in contact when the frames or leaves are folded, as represented in Figs. 1 and 4. The outermost frames of a group or series con s'tituting a single appliance preferably have surfaces only, while the intermediate frames or leaves preferably have them on both surfaces. The sections of the frames, between the strips 10, are provided with means for holding the account slips, such as spring clips, but as these-constitute no part of the present invention-and are well known in the art they are not illustrated.
Each leaf or bill holding frame 7, is supported in an individual base piece 11, consisting preferably of a strip of metal of a 7 in Figs. 3 and 4, when the leaves are V the other.
width approximately equal to the thickness of a bill carrying frame and having upturned .ends 12, 12'. In the end 12 of the base piece, there is mounted a bearing pin '13 having a cone shaped end adapted to be seated in a recess formed therefor in the end of a rod 9. This pin 13 is preferably riveted in place. In the opposite up-turned portion 12 of the base piece, there is mounted another bearing pin 14, which'is preferably adjustable by being screw threaded.
Its end is cone shaped or otherwise fitted and hold them in upright position, are preferably coiled about the rods 9, portions of the plates or sheets 8 being cut away at 16 to accommodate them. Each spring bears at one end against some relatively stationary part, such as a base piece 11, andat its other end against a swinging bill carrying frame 7 The bill. frames are. provided at their edges with strips 17 which serve both to strengthen and separate them and to give a finished appearance thereto. The inner or lower ends of these strips are formed into bearings 18, adapted to rest upon the rod or cross shaft 9. This construction largely relieves the strain incident to swinging a' frame on its pivot from the thin plate 8.
- As stated, each bill carrying frame is mounted in an individual support or base piece 11. These, in number corresponding with the number of frames in an appliance, are united in such manner that they may be separated sufliciently to allow the leaves-or frames 7 to lie close together in an upright position when the base frame is inclined, as represented in Figs. 1 and 2, or be moved close together side by side, as represented removed from the case for storage. 19, 2Q, 21, 22, and 23 indicate cross pieces secured to the supports or basepieces 11, and serving to unitethem and at the same time maintain them in parallel relation, one with The baseframe illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 consists of seven supporting bars or pieces 11, united by five cross plates or strips at each end. Each cross piece is rigidly secured to a supporting bar 11, by a rivet 245, or other suitable means. The cross pieces are represented as follows 19 as being secured to the lowermost bar, 20 to the third bar, 21 to the fourth bar, 22 to the fifth, and 23 to the seventh or uppermost leaf supporting bars 11. The cross piece'19 has two slots 25, the inner oneabout twice as long as the outer one in which move pins 26, carried respectively by the second and third bars 11. The cross bar '20 has preferably but a single slot in which a pin carried by-the fourth bar 11 moves, while'the' middle cross piece 21 need not be slotted at all, al-
though its ends overlie the third and fifth bars 11. 'Of course, this cross'piece 21 could beslotted and thus directly connected with the third and fifth-supporting bars, but this ordinarily is not found to be necessary. Cross pieces 22 and 23 are slotted in a manner similar to parts 19 and 20, although the slots are inversely arranged. The cross pieces are supported so as to lie in engagement, edge to edge, thus forming convenient means for maintaining the supporting bars 11 in arallelism under all conditions.
27, 27 in icate a pair of latches pivoted at 28' to an outermost bar of the supporting frame and'adapted to engage either with pins 29, 29, or pins 30, 30, carried by the supporting bar atthe edge of theframe opposite the bar to which the latches are pivoted. The pins 29 are located'toward the center of the bar 11,so that when the latches engage therewith they extend diagonally across the supporting frame andhold it in a closed position. But the pins 30 are so located that the latches extend across the bars 11 at right an les, and hold the supporting frame in extended position, as indicated in Fig. 2. r f V I have devised novel means for applying the strips 10 to the leaves or bill holding frames, which 'I will now describe. 7
In the plate or sheet 8 of each bill frame are formed a number of perforations, preferably oblong in shape, and arranged along the lines to be occupied by the strips 10.
Into theseperforations are insertedsmall pieces of metal 32, shaped in cross section to fitithe apertures quite closely and when inserted therein to extend beyond both theopposite surfaces of the plate. The'strips 10,
themselves, are formed of metal bent into Y Ushape transversely and set over the projecting ends of the'pieces 32, to which they are united in any suitable manner, as by being crimped thereto, as indicated at' 33. It
will thus be seen that the pieces 32 constitute anchor blocks to which the opposite strips 10 are united, and by which they are held in proper position against the opposite faces of the surfaces of the bill'holding frame.
To those skilled in the art of making filing appliances, many alterations in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of my invention will suggest themselves, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
My disclosures and the description herein are purely illustrative, and are not intended to be in any sense limiting.
