specification of Letters Patent.
I Patented July 2?, 1915.
Application filed September 29, 1314.. Serial No. 864,188.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, J HN BEGKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yosemite Valley, in thelcounty of Mariposa and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gages of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to gages and more particularly to the classof shingle gages for use on hatchets.
The primary object ofthe invention is the provision of a gage wherein it is made with a clamp so that it can be readily and easily mounted upon and fastened to the blade of a hatchet for use in laying shingles so that the latter may be accurately placed and the hatchet used in the ordinary well known manner.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision of a gage wherein the same is of novel form to permit the adjustment thereof when mounted on the blade of the ratchet for the setting of shingles.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a gage which is simple in construction, reliable and efficient in use, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view,- the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter. fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hatchet known as a shingling hatchet, showing the gage constructedin accordance with. the invention mounted thereon. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view 5 of the gage detached from the hatchet.
responding parts through the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates a shingling hatchet, which is of the ordinary well-known construction,- and is provided in its blade with an aperture 5 for the mounting of the shingling hereinafter fully described.
The shingling gage comprises a pair of clamping plates ;6

connected together.
through the medium of a hinge or pivot 7 so that the members can be swung together or opened. The inner meeting faces of the members near the pivoted end thereof are formed with semi-circular channels or grooves 8 which are intersected by teeth 9, and these grooves or channels 8 are adapted to receive the stem 10 carrying a gage foot 11, the said stem being formed wlth opposed transverse notches 12 diametrically opposite each other and in which .engage the teeth 9 for the fastening of the stem when adjusted, and the clamping mem bers (Stare fastened. upon the blade of the hatchet A in a manner presently described. 'lhe inner faces of the members 6 are formed with cut away portions 13 to accommodate the thickness of the blade of the hatchet A, and loosely passed through one of the said members 6 is a screw member 14 which is threaded in the other member 6 and is also passed through the aperture 5 in the blade of the hatchet A so that on the tightening of the screw 14 the members 6 will be firmly clamped upon the blade in the position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, and also the stem will be fastened. in adjusted position between the members 6 so that it will lie parallel with the longer outer edge of the hatchet Ate be-positioned for use in laying shingles.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that the construction and manner of use of the device willbe clearly unfjderstood, and therefore a more extended ex- Eplanation has been omitted. What is claimed is 1. A gage comprising a pair of swingingly connected membershaving grooves in Similar reference characters indicate corgrooves, a notched stem received by the their inner faces, teeth presented in said locked by the engagement of the teeth in the in presence 0 two witnesjses. ngtches in said stem, a gage foot on the 5 JOHN-BECKMANI grooves in the members and adapted to be In testimon whereof I, fiiimy signature stem, and a screw member mounted in the 5 members and engageable with the blade of Witnesses:
a hatchet for the clamping of the same B. A. KUCERA, thereon. M. E. WEST.
