IMPROVEMENT IN KEEPERS F'OR BOLTS.

Be it known that, I, JOHN M. MITCHELL, of Cin-- cinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented and improved an Adj ustable- Bolt- Socket, of which the following is a description, which will enable a person skilled in the art to manufacture and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying. drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of my improve ment attached toa door-jamb.

Figure 2 is a side view.

Figure 3 represents the socket and mode of attachment to the holder.

The object (if my improvement is to provide a boltsocket that may be readily adjusted to the bolt of a door which, from any cause, shall sag or be moved from its proper position in a vertical direction so as to render it diflicult tofit the bolt into the socket; and

The invention consists 'in' so attaching a sliding socket to .a holder which is attached to the doo'r-jamb as to enable it to be moved either up or down, and

adjusted to any varying position of the door. Virtu-- ally the invention is-designed more especially to be applied to doors on steam-boats, although it is equally applicable to any door which is liable to sag, or in any way change its position so that the bolt will not exactly fit its socket.

It is well known that in heavily-laden steam-boats the various parts of the structure are liable to be so strained as to materially'afiect the normal position of the doors in the different .parts of the vessel, so that the bolts onthe doors, or in the locks attached thereto, will fail to fit in the sockets which are rigidly attached to the do'or-jainbs in the usual manner.

By the use of my device the difliculty is readily overcome, and the socket is so arranged as to be easily adjusted to the varying position of the bolt upon the door.

which may be readily attached to the jainb of a right or left-handed door, and struck up in its central position so as to allow the socket B to slide freely on the same when secured to the door. 4

The device is easily and cheaply made, and may be readily applied to any'door-jamb having a bolt or lock already in use, and may be so used or adjusted as to overcome any warp or change of the usual or natural position of a door which may be occasioned by any dislocation or spring in the hinges, or shrinkage thereofl i I claim as my invention- The bolt-socket or keeper B, sliding freely upon the holder A, which is secured to the door-casing, all arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
