To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWIN G. BUSSE and ERNEST A. LE' BEAU, citizens of the United States, residing at. the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a certainnew and useful Improvement in Roller Side Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear,'and exact description, such as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which' Figure 1 is a side elevational view partly in vertical section of my improved roller side bearing forrailw'ay-cars. -Fig. 2 is a.

This invention relates to side bearings for railway cars of the single roller type, and embodies'in its general organization a'casing equipped withmovable carriers orfollowers, a, roller disposed between said followers, a removable axle carryingsaid roller and engaged with the followers, and means, preferably in the form of springs, acting upon the followers to maintain the. roller normally in centered position.
The invention has for its objects to provide a simplified form of device, the parts of which may be readily assembled or dismantled; one wherein the axle may be readily inserted or removed to effect assembling or disconnection of the parts; one inwhich a simplified means is provided for preventing accidental displacement of the axle and consequent accidental dismantling of the bearing; and one in which the lateral movement or play of the axle in a horizontal plane relative to the transverse axis of the casing is overcome.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
While there is shown an inverted bearing designed for attachment to the body bolster of the car it is obvious that this hearing could be attached to the truck bolster, in which event the roller would be presented upwardly and the casing provided with dirt exits preferably disposedin line with the surface of the track plate.
In the drawings, 1 designates a casing ed to receive and form bearings for the ad jacent ends 0f centering springs 7 seated at them opposite ends in seats .or pockets 8 formed in the walls of the casing. The
bearing blocksorfollowers 5, are each made in a singlepiece provided at its center with a bearm-g opening 8 there being employed a pair of the bearing blocks slidably mount ed one in each of the guide ways.

opposite the track plate with a suitable longitudinal opening through which the roller is thus exposed. One of the sidewalls is provided with a bossed opening in which a removable key plu'g 11 is arranged,said key plug beingheld in positionby acotter 12.
The inner" face of the key plug is prefer: I ably flush with the inner face of the groove 4 with which its opening communicates, and, the size of this opening is such as to permit the introduction and removal of the axle 9. The other side wall is provided with an opening 18 preferably opposite plug 11 so that when it is desired to dismantle the structure a small driving tool may be in serted through said opening 13 to drive out the axle. As illustrated, the openings 8 in blocks 5 in which the axle operates, may be somewhat elongated for the purpose of permitting free spinning movement of the roller and slight vertical movement of the V roller independently of the carnage.
In assembling the parts of the bearing above described, the bearings 5 and springs 7 are first introduced, after which the roller is placed between the bearings and the axle then inserted. The key plug is now introduced to close the opening through which the axle was inserted and the cotter pin introduced to prevent'displacenient of the key plug.
It is to be particularly noted that, as illusaxle when in normal centered position.
Owing'tothis disposition of the opening relative to the normal position of the axle, it obviously becomes necessary to move the bearing blocks to an abnormal position for permitting introduction of the axle into place while under normal conditions, and after the parts havebeen-properly assembled any end thrust of the axle will be borne in part by the side wall of the casing, thus may ride.

Displacement of the axle and accidental dismantling of the parts is positively prevented by means of the closure 11 seated and secured within the queuing through which the axle is introduced, it being noted that owing to the inner end of this plug or closure being flush with the inner surface of the guide way i the latter is rendered continuous in a smooth unbroken plane to present a smooth surface upon which the adjacent bearing block 5 It is to be further observed that owing to the bearing blocks being made in one piece, as distinguished from constructions in which such blocks are each composed of two pieces or sections-the axle is provided with firm bearings for its ends and is thus maintained in proper axial ali'nement with the transverse axis of the casing.
Although we have shown-a form employing but one roller, it is evident that the carriage may be formed to carry two or more rollers mounted and operating therein in fashion similar to the one shown.
We claim:
1. In a side bearing for railway cars, a casing provided with longitudinal guide ways, followers arranged for movement in said guide ways and having bearing openings, a roller disposed in the casing between the guide ways, an axle removably mounted in the roller and having its ends seated respectively in said bearing openings, said casing being provided with an opening through which the'axle is introducedinto place, this opening being registerable with the axle in said guide ways at a certain point in its travel but to one side of'the axis of the axle when in normal centered position, and means acting on the followers for normally centering the roller.
