Z 1o all whom t may concern Be itknown that I, FLMYR A. LAUGHLIN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Oregon, county of Ogle, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and. useful lmprovements in Side Bearings, of which the following is a specifica tion.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved form of side bearing for railway cars; to provide in a trunnioned roller side bearing an improved construction and arrangement of the housing whereby a section of the housing may be removed to permit the ready insertion or removal of the trunnioned roller, the arrangement being such as to avoid impairment of the strength of the housing at its outboa rd side where it is subjected to heavy strain; to provide an improved arrangement for securing the wear plate in place; and to provide an improved construction of the trunnion raceways whereby the roller will normally return by gravity to a medial position and whereby the wear on the roller due to vibration and pounding will be distributed over the periphery thereof.

In the construction shown in the drawings, the supporting frame or housing 1 is in the form of a hollow malleable casting open at the bottom to provide a roller runway 2 between the vertical side walls 3 and 4.-.
Rollers 5 are mounted to travel in the runways 2, being pro-vided with trunnions 6 and 7 extending into the trunnion guide- Specication of Letters Patent.

ways 8 and 9 formed in the respective walls 3 and 4. The trunnion guide-ways 8 and 9 provide inwardly disposed ledges 10 and 11 overhanging the trunnions and adapted to engage the same for supporting the roller when it is out of contact with the wear plate 12. The under sides of the upper guide surfaces or ledges 10 are inclined downwardly toward their ends so that when the roller approaches either limit of its travel, the load will be transferred from the periphery of the roller to the trunnions and the car will be slightly elevated with respect to the truck, as more fully described and claimed in my Patent No. 1,163,020, dated December 7, 1915.
The lower ledges or guide surfaces are of wavelike form and have a series of transverse ridges 13 and depressions 14 extending throughout the greater part of the length of said ledges. One ridge is preferably located at a point substantially midway between the ends of the trunnion guide-ways so that the rollers will come to rest at one side or the other of a central position. This distributes the wear on the rollers due to pounding` while the rollers are idle.
The outer shoulders 15 on the ledges 11 are preferably made square and are located slightly outward of the center of the roller when the latter is at the limit of its travel so that the roller will roll inward from shoulder 15 toward a central position, as fully explained in my Patent No. 1,131,252, dated March 9, 1915. This construction of the upper surfaces of the ledges 11 also tends to prevent the roller from rolling toward the' ends of the runways at times when the roller is relieved of the load.
A section 16 is made removable from the wall et of the housing to allow for the insertion or removal of the roller 5. The section 16 comprises a part 17 of the side of the wall 4- and a part 18 of the ledge 11. The width of the part 17 is substantially equal to the diameter of the trunnion 7 and that of the section 1S is substantially equal to the diameter of the roller 5. When this section is removed, the roller 5 may be shifted aXially so that the trunnion 7 projects through the opening formed by the removal of part 17 of the wall t and the roller 5 moves into the space formed by the removal of the part 18 from the ledge 11, as indicated in dotted outline in Fig. 3. This removes the trunnion 6 from the trunnion guide-way 8 so that the roller may be readily withdrawn from the housing. The section 16 is separated from the wall el on planes 19 and 20, converging axially outward, as indicated in Fig; 2, so that when the' sections are set in place any pressure thereon from the inside tends to wedge them more firmly in position.
Shoulders 21 formed on the part 18 engage theadjacent part of the wall 4 and coact with the tapered sides of the section 16 in securing the'latter in place and enable it to be securely fastened by a single rivet 211 connecting the lugs 22 and 23 on the section 16 and adjacent part of the wall 4.

The frame 1 is provided with the usual apertured flanges 30 by means of which the bearing may be attached to the car bolster in the usual manner.
VAlthough but one specific embodiment of this invention has lbeen herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
1. A side bearing, comprising a trunnioned roller, a housing having an opening through which said roller pro-trudes, and runways formed Vin said housing for the trunnions of said roller, one of said runways having al removable section adapted to permit said roller to be shifted axially out of said other runway and then be Withdrawn through said opening.
2. A side bearing, comprising a trun- V nioned roller, a 4housing having an opening through which said roller protrudes, and runways formed in said housing for the trunnions of saidroller, one of said runways having a removable section adapted to permit said roller to be shifted axially out of said other runway and then be withdrawn through said opening and the other said .runway beingpformed integrally with said housing;
BIA side bearing, comprising a roller having trunnions, a housing for said roller having runways for said trunnions and having an opening through which said roller protrudes, said opening being shaped to pen mitsaid roller to be shifted axially out of engagement with one of said runways and then be withdrawn through said opening, and removable means for preventing such shifting of said roller.
'4. A side bearing, comprising a roller having trunnions, a housing comprising side walls spaced apart and having inwardly directed flanges serving as runways for said trunnions, one of said side walls being cut away to permit said roller to be shifted axially and radially out of said housing, and a flanged wall section for closing said opening to conine said roller in the housing.
5. A side bearing, comprising a housing having walls spaced apart to form a roller runway between them, a roller mounted to travel in said runway and having trunnions, said walls having guide-ways for said trunnions, and a section removable from one of said walls so as to allow said roller to be shifted axially to project the adjacent trunnion through the opening formed by the removal of said section and withdraw the opposite trunnionfrom its guide-way, allowing said roller to be moved radially out of said housing.

A side bearing, con'iprising a housing having walls spaced apart to form a roller runway between them, a roller mounted to travel in said runway and having trunnions, said walls having guide-ways for said trunnions, a section removable from one of said walls so as to allow said roller to be shifted axially to project the adjacent trunnion through the opening formed by the removal of said section and withdraw the opposite trunnion from its guide-way,allowing said roller to be moved radially out of said housing, and a lug on said section adapted to be connected to the housing for retaining said section in place.
7. A side bearing, comprising a housing having walls spaced apart to form a roller runway between them, a roller mounted to travel in said runway and having trunnions, said walls having guide-ways for said trunnions, a section removable from one of said walls so as to allow said roller to be shifted axially to project the adjacent trunnion through the opening formed by the removal of said section and withdraw the opposite trunnion from its guide-way, allowing said roller to be moved radially out of said housing, registering lugs formed on said section and wall, and means connecting said lugs to secure said section in place.
8. A side bearing, comprising a YFrame having walls spaced apart to form a roller runway between them, a roller mounted to travel in said runway, trunnions on said roller, said walls having trunnion guideways to receive said trunnions and including inwardly disposed ledges serving as tracks for said trunnions, a section removable from the side of one of said walls, and a section removable from one of the ledges on said wall, said sections when removed allowing said roller to be shifted axially to project the adjacent trunnion and part of the roller into the openings formed by the removal of said sections and .vithdrawing the opposite trunnion from its guide-way, whereupon said roller may be moved radially out of said runway.
9. A side bearing, comprising a frame having walls spaced apart to form a roller runwaj,y between them, a roller mounted to travel. in said runway, trunnions on said roller, said wallshaving trunnion guideways to receive said trunnions and including inwardly disposed ledges serving as tracks for said trunnions, a section removable from the side of one of said walls, a section removable from one of the ledges on said wall, said sections when removed allowing said roller to be shifted axially to project the adjacent trunnion and part of the roller into the openings formed by the removal of said sections and withdrawing 'the opposite trunnion from its guide-way, whereupon said roller may be moved radially out of said runway, said side section and ledge section being integral, and means for securing said sections in place on said wall.
10. A side bearing, comprising a frame having walls spaced apart to form a roller runway between them, a roller mounted to travel. in said runway, trunnions on said roller, said walls having trunnion guideways to receive said trunnions and including inwardly disposed ledges serving as racks for said trunnions, a section separated from one of said walls on lines con.- verging axially outward and including a part of the side and a part of one of the corresponding ledges, said section being removable frein said wall so as to allow said roller to be shifted axially to project the adjacent trunnion and part of the roller into the opening` formed by the removal of said section and withdrawing the opposite trunnion from its guide-way, whereupon said roller may be moved radially out of said runway.
11. A side bearing, comprising a frame having walls spaced apart to form a roller runway between them, a roller mounted to travel in said runway, trunnions on said roller, said walls having trunnion guideways to receive said trunnions and including inwardly disposed ledges serving as racks for said trunnions, a section separated from one of said walls on lines converging axially outward and including a part of the side and a part of one of the corresponding ledges, said section being removable from said wall so as to allow said roller to be shifted axially to project the adjacent trunnion and part of the roller into the opening formed by the removal of said section and withdrawing the opposite trunnion from its guide-way, whereupon said roller may be moved radially out of said runway, and shoulders on said section engaging the outer face of said wall so as to coact with the abutting tapered faces of said section and wall for securing said section rigidly in place on said wall.
12. -A side bearing, comprising a frame having walls spaced apart to form a roller runway between them, a roller mounted to travel in said runway, trunnions on said roller, said walls having trunnion guideways to receive said trunnions and including inwardly disposed ledges serving as tracks for said trunnions, a section separated from one of said walls on lines converging axially outward and including a part of the side and a part of one of the corresponding ledges, said section being removable from said wall so as to allow said roller to be shifted axially to project the adjacent trunnion and part of the roller into the opening formed by the removal of said section and withdrawing the opposite trunnion from its guide-way, whereupon said roller may be moved radially out of said runway, shoulders on said section engaging the outer face of said wall so as to coact with the abutting tapered faces of said section and wall for securing said section rigidly in place on said wall, and lugs on said section and wall adapted to have fastening means connected thereto for securing said section to said wall.

A side bearing, comprising a housing having vertical walls spaced apart to provide a roller runway between them and having inwardly disposed horizontal ledges, a roller mounted to travel in said runway between said ledges, trunnions on said roller ove-rhanging said ledges, and a section comprising a part of the side and a part of the corresponding ledge of one of said vertical walls being removable so as to allow said roller to be shifted axially to project the adjacent trunnion and part of said roller into the opening formed by the removal of said section and withdraw the opposite trunnion from its position overhanging the opposite ledge, whereupon said roller may be moved radially out of said runway.
14. A side bearing, comprising a housing having vertical walls spaced apart to provide a roller runway between them and having inwardly disposed horizontal ledges, a roller mounted to travel in said runway between said ledges, trunnions on said roller overhanging said ledges, and a section comprisi ng a part of the side substantially equal in width to the diameter of said trunnions and a part of the corresponding ledge substantially equal in width to the diameter of said roller of one of said vertical walls being removable so as to allow said roller to be AAA ` having transversely disposed walls spaced apart to form a roller runway between them,
a roller mounted to travel in said runway, a .wear plate for engaging said roller, said housing having a recess formed therein at one side of said runway and arranged to receive one end of said wear plate, and a member adapted to be-secured to said housing at the opposite side of said runway and having a shoulder in position to engage the other end of said wear plate for supporting it in position on said housing.
16. A side bearing, comprising a trunnioned roller, a housing having an opening through which said roller protrudes and having trunnion guide-ways at each side of said opening for guiding and limiting the travel of said roller, said guideways having ledges adjacent to the limits of travel of said roller and adapted to cause said -roller to roll by gravity toward a central position, and a central ,ridge for preventing said roller from coming to rest in a central position.
17. A sidebearing, comprising a 'trunnioned roller, a housing having'an opening through which said roller protrudes and having trunnion guide-ways at each side of said opening for guiding and limiting the travel of said roller, said guide-ways having ledges adjacent to the limits of travel of said roller and adapted to cause said roller to roll by gravity toward a central position, and a corrugated track surface between said ledges.

20. A side bearing, comprising a roller having trunnions, a housing for said roller having an opening through which said roller protrudes and having inwardly extending ledges forming runway tracks for said trunnions, said housing being cut away at one side to permit said roller to be shifted first axially and then radially outward through said opening, and a removable wall section adapted to supply the cutaway portion of said trunnion tracks and having interlocking relation with said housing, said removable section and housing having registering lugs for receiving fastening means to prevent the separation thereof.
