Referringl first to the embodiment of the nvention illustrated in Figures 1 to; 9 inclusive, the body bolster is interlocked with the truck holster* bymy improved locking center pin which comprises broadly tvvo elongated sections` or members A and B, which are headed` at opposite ends. rThe two members. A and B are off the same design,
except as hereinafter pointed out; EachmemberV is of substantially semi-cylindrical cross section andis provided at theitopithereoi with an; o o-s` centric, substantially semi-cylindrical, outstanding flange 28, and with a concentric, substantially semi-cylindrical, outstanding flange 29 at the bottom end thereof. As will be evident, the flanges 28 and 29 -form top and bottom head members of the members A and B, which head members are at opposite ends of the shank portions of said members A and B. y
On the inner side, each member A and B presents a substantially flat, vertically extending, transverse face 30. The member A has a laterally inwardly extending ange or lug 3| at the lowerV end thereof, projecting from the inner side, and the flat face 30 of said member extends from said lug to the upper end thereof. The lug 3| has its underneath face in transverse alignment with the underneath face of the iiange 29 at the lower end of said member, and is cut away on an incline, or beveled off at the upper side, as indicated at 32. The transverse, vertical side face of said lug is substantially flat and, in the ap- Vpliedcondition of the pin, bears on the flat, inner side face 30 of the member B at the lower end of the latter. The member B is provided `with a laterally inwardly extending ange or lug at the upper end thereof, projecting from its inner side, which lug is similar to the lug 3| of the member A and is also indicated by 3|. The lug 3| of the member B bears on the inner side of the member A, that is, on the flat surface 3G thereof.
As will be evident, the lugs 3 I-3I of the members A and B hold these members spread apart with the heads or flanges 28-28 overlapping the annular shoulder I1 provided by the ange I6 of the body bolster II and the flanges 29-29 cooperating with the shoulder presented by the top wall of the pocket 24 of the truckl bolster I2 to restrict upward movement of the pin.
As shown most clearly in Figures 2 and '1, the member A is beveled off at the upper end on the inner side to provide an incline or cam face 33. The inclined faces 32-32 of the flanges or lugs 3 I-3I of the members A and B, and the inclined face 33 of the member A are parallel to each other. The inclined face 32 on the underneath side of the lug 3| of the member B forms a cam face cooperating with the cam face 33 of the member A to cam the upper end of the latter outwardly, and the inclined face 32 at the lower end ofthe member A forms a cam face cooperating with the lower end Yof the member B to cam Y said memberA outwardly at its lower end during application of the center pin to the bolsters, as hereinafter pointed out.
The eccentric iianges 28-28 at the top ends of the members A and B are of Such a size that they will pass freely through the pin receiving openings of both the body and truck bolsters when the pin is contracted, that is, the top head of the member B is of such a size and outside contour that it will pass freely upwardly and downwardly through the center pin receiving openings of the bolsters when the member A is absent, and the head of the member A is of such a size and outside contour that it will pass freely through said openings when the pin is contracted with the member B in position and with the inner side of the member A abutting the inner side of the member B.
In applying the center pin, the member B is first inserted in the center pin openings of the bolsters by passing the same upwardly through said openings until the upper header flange 28 thereof reaches a position above the shoulder I1 of the body bolster. When thus disposed, the member B is displaced laterally outwardly to engage the flange 28 thereof over said shoulder, as shown in Figure 2, and the ange 29 beneath the shoulder of the opening of the truck bolster. The member A is then inserted upwardly in the bolster openings in parallelism with the member B, as illustrated by the dotted line position of the member A in Figure 5. As the member A is pushed upwardly, the lower end thereof is cammed outwardly by engagement of the cam face 32 thereof with the lower end of the member B, and the upper end of said member A comes into engagement with the underneath side of the lug 3| at the upper end of the member B, as shown in full lines in Figure 5. Through this tilting movement of the member B, the head or flange 28 at the upper end thereof is angled to position the outer edge of said flangek slightly above the shoulder I1 of the bolster. During this operation,'the upper end of the member A is cammed laterally outwardly away from the member B by the cam face 33 of the member A engaging with the underneath cam face 32 of the member B, thereby engaging the head or flange 28 of the member A over the shoulder I1, as shown in Figure 6, at the same time permitting the member B to drop to the position shown in Figure 2. The upper end of the pin is thus held spread apart by the lug 3| while the lower end is held in spread condition by the lug 3| of the member A abutting against the inner side of the member B. With the heads 28-28 at the upper ends of the sections A and B resting on the shoulder I1 of the body bolster, the pin will be maintained in the spread condition shown in Figure 2, locking the bolsters together. The weight of the member B of the pin will effectively prevent the same from working upwardly to a position wherein the upper head end of the member A could slip below the lug 3| of the member B. However, in order to guard against any possibility of such action taking place, the member B may be provided with a depending perforated lug 34 at its lower end adjacent the inner side, through which a bolt'35 is engaged, the nut 36 of which shoulders against the lower end of the member A." Upward movement or displacement of the member B with respect to the member A is thus positively prevented.
In removing the center pin from the bolsters, the operation is substantially the reverse of that just described, the member B being pushed upwardly until it provides suicient clearance for displacement, of the head member 28 and the lug 3I of the member A to permit the latter to swing to the full line position shown in Figure 5 and drop out or be forcibly pulled downwardly.
Referring next tothe embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figure 10, my improved center pin comprises two members C and D which differ slightly from the members A and B hereinbefore described. The members C and D are provided with outstanding flanges I28-I28 at their v upper ends which are in all respects similar to the flanges 28-28 of the members A and B hereinbefore described, with the exception that the underneath faces of the flanges are beveled, as indicated at |31 to fit the correspondingly beveled surface |38 of the shoulder I I1 of the body bolster II. At their lower ends, the members 'C and D are provided with outstanding anges I29-I29 in all respects'similar to the flanges29-29 of the members A and B.
The inner side of the member D presents a subaasaoce stanti'ally at :facev |30, which is vertically;disposed, while the inner side of the: member C is provided witha relatively short, vertical, flat face |39 Vat its lower end, and is cut away above .said face |39, as shown, to present an elongated at face |40, which is inclined away from the `face |30 of the` inner side of the member C and ex tends approximately to the flange |28 at .thesupper end of said member C rwheretheinnerside presents a substantially ilat,` vertical face HI.` At the upper end thereof, the member D is provided with a laterally inwardly projecting lug |34 4which bears on the flat face |4|` of the member Cto hold the upper ends of the sectional pin spread apart. The ilange I 3| of the member D is under cut, or beveled, as indicated at |42, and `theupper end at the inner side of the member C is beveled,
or inclined, as indicated at |43, to facilitateassembly of the pin with the bolster, these beveled portions forming cam faces which cooperate during assembling of the mechanismto spread the members apart and bring the head |28 atI the upper end of the member C over theshoulder of the bolster. The lower ends` of the members C and D are held spread apart in the applied condition of the pin by engagement between the in ner side of the lower end portion of the member D with the vertical face |319 of the enlarged lower end of the memberC. In applying and removing the members C and D, the same procedure is= followed as hereinbefore described in connection with the pin composed of the-members. A and B illustrated in Figures 1 to -inclusive,V
Although the improved center pins `illustrated in Figures 1 to 8 inclusive and Figure 1.0 have. been shown as arranged to be appliedl from underneath the truck bolster, it will be evident that the same may be arranged tobe applied from abovethe body bolster downwardly through the bolster opening by reversing the members end for` end;` as shown in- Figure- 9, that is, with the pin, as` a whole, inverted. In other words, the pin formed by the members A and B will have the danses'` 29-29 at the top and the flanges 28e-28 at the bottom, and the pin formedby the sections C and D will have the iianges IIS-,|29 at the top and the iianges |28|28 at the bottom.
As will be evident from'the preceding description taken in connection with the drawings, in` my improved design of` center pin construction,
advantage is taken of the usual play or clearance provided between the heads of the pin and the shoulders of the bolsters to permit relative longitudinal displacement of the members of the sec tional pin in assembling the same with the bol;- stersr It is further pointed out that by so designing the pin that the members composing the same are insertable within the center pin receiving openings of the bolsters one at a time and in succession and taking advantage of the usual clearance or play provided between the shoulders of the bolsters and the heads of the members of the pin, the number of members making up the complete expandible pin may be reduced to the minimum, or two in number, and yet give the maximum overlap of the heads with respect to the shoulders at the pin receiving openings of the holsters to provide the required strength.
I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred manner of carrying out my invention, but the same is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and modifications that come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:

In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having` alignedV center pin receiving openings; of a two-part sectional center pin insertable in said openings, each section comprising a shank member extending through said openings and laterally outwardly projecting heads at opposite ends of said shank portion; anda laterally projecting inner ange at one end of each member of the pin, the flanges of said respective members being at opposite ends ofthe pin, each inner ilange engaging the inner side of the other member to hold said members spaced apart between said inner flanges, said engagement being on flat vertical faces.

In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having aligned center pin sertable in said openings, 'each part comprising an elongated memberhaving heads at opposite ends adapted to overlie said shoulders to prevent separation of the bolsters; and a lateral enlargement at one end of each member, said enlargements of said respective members being at opposite ends of the pin, the enlargement of each member having engagement with the inner side of the other member, said engagement being on flat vertical faces.
5. In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having aligned center pin receiving openings and an abutment shoulder surrounding each opening; of a two-part sectional pin insertable in said openings, each part comprising an elongated member having laterally outwardly projecting heads at opposite ends cooperating with the shoulders of said openings; and` a laterally inwardly offset section on the inner side of each member at one end thereof, said offset section of one of said members being at the upper end of the pin and the offset section of the other member being at the lower end thereof, the offset section of each member having flat bearing engagement with the inner side of the'other members to hold said member spread apart and separated between said offset sections, said engagement being on flat vertical faces.
6. In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having aligned center pin receiving openings, each opening being surrounded by an abutment shoulder; of a two-part sectional pin insertable in said openings, said pin being headed at opposite ends to cooperate with said shoulders, respectively, said pin being split lengthwise into two members, each member having an offset lateral enlargement at one end thereof on the inner side of the same, said enlargements of said two members respectively being at opposite ends of the pin, the enlargement of each member bearing on the inner side of the other member to hold the members spread apart and separated between said enlargements, the engagement between said enlargements and said inner sides being on flat vertical faces.
7. In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having aligned center pin receiving openings, each opening being surrounded by an abutment shoulder; of a two-part sectional pin insertable in said openings, said pin being headed at opposite ends to cooperate with said shoulders, said pin being split lengthwise into two members, one of said members presenting a flat Vertical face portion on the inner side at the upper end thereof and having a laterally projecting lug on the inner side at the lower end thereof presenting a flat vertical inner face, said other member presenting a flat vertical face portion on the inner sideY at the lower end thereof and having a laterally projecting lug on the inner side at the upper end thereof presenting'a flat vertical inner face, Ythe fiat face of the lug of each member being in abutment with the flat face of the other memberto hold said pin spread apart with the portions thereof between said lugs laterally spaced with respect to each other.
8. In" car' construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having aligned center pin receiving openings, each opening having a surrounding abutment shoulder; of a two-part sectional pin insertable in said openings, each part comprising an elongated member headed at opposite ends to cooperate with said shoulders, each of said members having the inner side thereof provided with a flat vertically extending face ing laterally outwardly projecting flanges at opat one end and an inwardly projecting lug at the other end, said lug having a flat vertically extending inner face, the lug of each member being in abutment with the flat face of the other member to hold said members separated between said lugs and maintain the pinl spread apart with the heads of the two members overhanging the shoulders of the pin receiving openings, said lugs having cam faces engaging said members to spread the same apart upon relative lengthwise displacement of said members with respect to each other.
9. In car construction, the combination with body' and truck bolsters having aligned center pinreceiving openings, each of said openings being surrounded by an-abutment shoulder; of a two-part sectional center pin insertable in said openings, said pin being split lengthwise into two sections, one of said sections comprising an elongated member having laterally outwardly projecting flanges at opposite ends cooperating with said shoulders of the openings, and a laterally projecting lug on the inner sidev thereof at one end of the pin,`and a second elongated member havposite ends cooperating with said shoulders of the openings, and a laterally projecting lug on the inner side thereof at the opposite end of the i pin, the lug of said first named member having bearing engagement with the inner side of said second named member on vertically extending flat surfaces, and the lug of said second named member bearing on the inner side ofr said f'lrst named member on vertically extending flat surfaces to hold said members spread apart and laterally spaced apart between said lugs, and inclined guide surfaces on the inner sides of said members at the inner ends of said lugs for camming said members apart upon relative lengthwise displacement of said members with respect to each other.
