Description
W. UPTHEGROVE.
RMLWAY CATTLE GUARD.
APPLICATION FILED MAR.30. 1914- Patented July 27, 1915.
l/vi fweoo as WILLIAM UPTHEG-ROVE, OF CLARE, MICHIGAN.
RAILWAY CATTLE-GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1915.
Application filed March 30, 1914. Serial No. 828,322.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM UPTHEGROVE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clare, in the county of Clare and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Cattle- Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gates and more specifically to roller railway cattle-guards.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple device to be placed transversely of a railway track at points where cattle have a tendency to go upon the track, said device is simple in construction and effective in operation in that each roller thereof contains a proper number of projections around the periphery of the roller so that should an animal step upon the guard it could not proceed forward; neither would it become fastened in the guard, but would be able to extricate itself and move in the direction from which it came. This quality of my invention overcomes one of the chief difliculties encountered with devices of a like nature intended for a similar purpose.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the detailed description and drawings forming a part of this specification.
Furthermore, this invention consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts more particularly described in the following specification and embodied in the claim appended hereunto and forming a part of this application.
Referring now to the drawings which are merely illustrative of my invention, and which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my device, while Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on a line 06 w of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow, while Fig. 4 is a fragmental detail side elevation of one of the toothed members.
Referring further to the drawings, wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout the respective views, 1 designates the sides of the frame,
while 2 are the ends thereof into which are revolubly mounted a plurality of rollers 3, preferably of wood, and having secured along the length thereof and peripherally disposed upon the outer circumference thereof a plurality of toothed members 4, the toothed members on one roller being located in staggered relation with respect to the toothed members on the adjacent roller so that when revolved, the teeth on one roller will intermesh with the teeth on the adjacent roller. A cross piece 5 is securely bolted to side pieces 1 for the purpose of strengthening the entire structure. Secured to the bottom of side pieces 2 and curving upwardly and outwardly therefrom, with the concave side adjacent to said side pieces 2, is an auxiliary guard 6.
Having now described and pointed out the new and useful features of my invention, I do not limit myself to the shape of certain parts where the shape is not essential, nor do I restrict myself to the exact details of construction shown and described, but mean and intend to claim all equivalents and variations thereof not departing in principle from my invention and falling within the purview of the appended claim.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a cattle-guard, the combination of a frame, a plurality of rollers rotatably mounted within said frame, a plurality of sheet metal strips formed with angular teeth upon one edge thereof, said strips being mounted upon said rollers longitudinally thereof and in spaced apart relation with respect to each other, and a plurality of curved guard members, said guard members mounted under said frame transversely thereof so that the longitudinal edges of said curved members will be disposed upwardly and outwardly from the transverse sides of said frame.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
W'ILLIAM UPTHEGROVE.
