ERo IsLAw SHERMAN, or EEIE, PENNSYLVANIA;
COMBINED LADDER AND IRONINGr-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1915.
Application filed May 3, 1915. Serial No. 25,556.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BnoNIsLAw SHERMAN, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Ladders and Ironing-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined ladder and ironing table.
lhe primary object of this invention is to provide a foldable ironing table adapted for positioning in the form of a step ladder when so desired, and capable of being readily positioned to re-assume a table formation.
A further object is to provide an ironing table consisting of a board and hinged supporting legs, the legs of which are unfoldable into such an engagement with each other as to position the reverse side of the ironing board for forming an inclined ladder by means of hinged steps carried thereby.
A still further object is to provide interengaging base and strut members upon a ladder and being so foldable as to form leg supports for the ladder when horizontally positioned with'the reverse side of the ladder uppermost and adaptable as an ironing board.
lVith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Inthe accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device partially broken away and employed as an ironing table. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device employed as a step ladder, parts thereof being broken away. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the step ladder formation. Fig. l is a transverse sectional view taken through the ladder showing one of the hinged steps in elevation. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lower portion of the ladder strut, and, Fig. 6 is a detail elevation of a portion of the free end of the ladder base brace.
' Referring more in detail to the drawings, it will be noted that the device primarily consists of the substantially rectangular board 10 having one plain side 11 to be employed for an ironing surface While the reverse side 12 is provided with transverselypositioned steps 13 secured thereto by means of hinges l4 and adapted to be utilized as a ladder member when outwardly positioned. One end 15 of the board which corresponds to the head of the ironing board and to the top of the step ladder is slightly contracted and curved, and is provided with a central longitudinal notch 16 therein. A strut or leg 16 has one end thereof pivoted to the rod 17 within said slot 16 at the inner end thereof and said strut is adapted for swinging through said slot 16 to either side of the board and when positioned adjacent the board side 11 in the ladder formation as illustrated in Fig. 2, the strut will engage the inclined surface 18 formed in the board at the inner end of said slot. The combined strut and leg 16 is provided with an extenbe engaged by the hook 23 carried by the board side 12, such engagement being desirable when the leg 16 and its extension 19 are folded upon each other and positioned perpendicular to the side 12 and being in the table formation as illustrated in Fig. 1.
The hook 23 then retains the table leg so formed rigid beneath the board and adjacent the head end 15 of the table. A base brace 24 is hinged to the opposite end of the table and centrally thereof upon the transversely positioned rod 25 and within an end slot 26 of the board. The brace 21 is provided with a socket 27 adjacent its hinged end and said socket has a spanning wire 28 to be engagedby the hook 29 carried by the face 12 of the board and positioned in engagement for maintaining the brace 24 perpendicular to the board in the table formation of the device.
When the board is used for an ironing table, being positioned horizontal, the steps 13 are maintained in flat engagement with the under surface of the board 12 by means of turn clips 30 which are positioned over the steps for so retaining the same in their inoperative positions but may be readily re leased for allowing the steps to be moved upon their hinges 1 1 to their operative positions when the board is suitably inclined as illustrated in Fig. 2. The hook 29 being released, the brace 24 is positioned upon the ground for supporting the ladder and the strut and its extension are moved upon the hinge 20 into alinement with each other, and thus form a continuous strut member which is swung from its perpendicular position to the side 12 of the board through the slot 16 and to a position in contact with the inclined surfacelS of the board and forming .an acute angle with the board side 11, and as best illustrated in Fig. 2, the free end of the extension 19 being positioned within a rectangular socket 31 in the end portion of the base brace 24.
The complete operation of the device will be apparent from this detailed description in that the elements may be readily made to assume either an ironing table or a step ladder formation. When positioned as a table in the form illustrated in Fig. 1, a releasing of the hooks 23 and 29 allows the strut and brace to be each swung to a position adjacent the oppositeside of the board fromthat which they assume as supporting legs for the table board, and are then readily positioned as the combined strut interengaging with the base brace, as illustrated in Fig. 2. It is obvious that a substantial reversal of these movements will bring the elements back to their form as an ironing table. The steps 13 are adapted to be retained folded inwardly upon hinges whenever so desired, although such a folding thereof is not essential to either formation of the structure.
While the forms of the invention herein shown and described are what are believed to be preferable embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that Various forms, modifications and arrangement of the parts as shown may be had without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is '1. A combined table and ladder consisting of a board having longitudinal slots in its opposite ends, a strut hinged in one of said slots, an extension hinged to the free end of said strut, a brace hinged in the other one of said slots and provided with a rectangular socket adjacent its free end and adapted to receive the free end of said strutextension with the device in its ladder formation.
2. A combined ladder. and table comprising a rectangular board having a tapered rounded head portion and longitudinal slots in each end of the board, transverse hinge rods extending through each end of the board and traversing said slots, a strut hinged upon the rod and within the slot at the head of the board, the board being provided at the inner end of said head slot with an inclined abutting surface, an extension hinged to the free end of said strut, a brace hinged to the rod within the slot at the opposite end of the board and provided with a rectangular recess adjacent its free end, the free end of said extension being adapted to fit within said recess and said strut adapted to engage said inclined surface with the device positioned in its step ladder formation.
8. A combined ladder and table compris- 1 ing a rectangular board having a tapered rounded head portion and longitudinal slots in each end of the board, transverse hinge rods extending through each end of the board and traversing said slots, a strut hinged upon the rod and within the slot at side of said board, swinging clips carried by said board adjacent said steps and adapted for engaging thereover with said steps in their folded positions, said extension provided with a recess adjacent its free end, a spanning wire over said recess, a keeper upon said brace adjacent its hingedend, hooks carried by the same side of said board upon which the steps are hinged and adapted for engaging said wire and keeper when the strut with its extension and said brace are perpendicularly positioned with respect to the board with the device in its table formation. e
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
