Be it known thatI, YoLn SAYNIsorI, a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident ofthe city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have inventedV a new and Improved Washable Corset, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to washable corsets and the object thereof is to provide an inexpensive, convenient and sanitary corset which is provided with .removable corset steels whereby the corset fabric can be as easily washed as any other washable garment.

IV ith the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consistsin the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and igure 1 is a perspective elevation of acorset embodying Ymy invention; Fig. 2'is an enlarged fragmentary view of one of the front steels in engagement with the'corset fabric; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the removal of or placing in of the complementary corset steel; Fig. 4 is a sec tion on line 1- 41, Fig. 2;Fig. 5 is an end view in the direction of the arrow 5 in Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary eleva tion of the rear corset steels; and Fig. 7 is a section showing` the removable side steels.

Referring to the drawings, the washable corset fabric 8 at each side edge thereof is provided with a pocket 9 extending through the entire length of the edge and being open at the side adjacent the top and also at its lower end where the pocket stops, slightly above the lower edge of the corset fabric. Associated with eachvof the pockets is an elongated, inverted U-shaped corset steel 10, one branch of which is removably engaged in the pocket through the upper opening 11, the end of said branch projecting out from the pocket through its lower opening.

The other branch of the inverted U-shaped member 10 has at the end of the branch a pivotally-mounted locking member 12 adapted to engage the portion of the other branch projecting out of the pocket. member 12 is prevented from accidental disengagement bythe resiliency of the `corset steels 10 at the juncture of the branches. One of the steels at vthe front is provided with lateral .extensions 13 which have the customary slots to engage the headsv of the pins or studs l rprovided on the comple- Inentaryv front steellO. Ea'chof the rear steels is provided with laterally spaced eyelets 15 whichare adapted to receive the lace 16 whereby the corset can be laced.

The lower edge of the corset fabric 8 is provided with the customary garters 19.

vWhen the corset is to be washed the front the corresponding branch of the steel and then pulling the steel out of the pocket, as shown in Fig. 3. The steels 18 are also removed from their pockets by forcing the lower portion `of the pocket 16 over the lower edge of the steel 1S, when the steels 18 can be easily pulled out from their pockets. This will leave the corset fabric without any rigid members and the same can be easily washed as any other washable garment. After washing the fabric, the steels are replaced into position as previously stated.

rIhe corset fabric 8 adjacent the pockets 9 has a flap21 extendingv through the entire length of the corset edge where the pocket is provided so as to form a protection for the body from the branches of the steels 10 lying outside of the` pockets.

From the foregoing descriptionmtaken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantage of the corset shown will be readily understood by those lskilled in the art; and while I have described. the principle of operation together with the corset which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely and rear corset steels-lO'are removedby first `r`80 disengaging the locking member 12 from illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

l. ln a corset, a washable fabric body, front and rear steels in the shape of an elongated U, said fabric having pockets, each adapted to detachably engage one branch of a U-shaped steel, the other branch of the steel having means for connecting together the opposed front steels and also the opposed rear steels.

2. ln a Washable corset, removable front and rear steels, each in the shape of an elongated U, and means for locking the ends of the U.

3. ln a corset, a washable fabric body, front and rear U-shaped steels, said fabric having pockets, each adapted to detachably engage one branch of a U-shaped steel, the other branch of the steel having means for connecting together the opposite front steels and also the opposite rear steels, and means for interlocking the ends of the branches of each U-shaped steel.

Il. ln a corset, a washable fabric body having longitudinal pockets adjacent the edges thereof, each of said pockets being open at the lower end and on the side at the upper end, inverted U-shaped steels detachably engaging with one branch thereof a pocket through the upper opening, and means for locking the ends of each U-shaped steel below the lower opening of a pocket, the non-engaged branches of the steels having the usual closure fastening means.

5. In a corset, a washable fabric body having longitudinal pockets adjacent the edges thereof, inverted U -shaped steels, each having a branch removably associated with a pocket and a non-engaged branch, and a flap adjacent each pocket adapted to protect the body from the non-engaged branch of the U-shaped steels, said non-engaged branches of the steels having the usual closure fastening devices.

G. ln a corset, a washable fabric body, front and rear resilient steels in the shape of an elongated U, said fabric having pockets each adapted to detachably engage one branch of a U-shaped steel, the non-engaged branch of the steel having the usual closure fastening device adapted to coperate witl the adjacent non-engaged branch of another steel, and locking members pivotally connected to said non-engaged branches, whereby the two branches of a U-shaped steel can be locked after the same has been engaged in a pocket, said locking member ing prevented from accidental displacement by the resiliency of the Lil-shaped steels.
