COMBINED SHIPPING AND DISPLAY CASE.
Application filed December 27, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. LINK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunkirk, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Shipping and Display Cases, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention is an improved combination shipping and display case, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which may be used both for shipping and for displaying commodities and which may be readily set up and arranged for either of such uses, the invention consisting in the construction, com bination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying draWings:Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined shipping and display case constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same arranged for use as a shipping case. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the same arranged for use as a display case. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
The body of the case comprises walls 1234. These walls are all of the same length and suitable width and are each provided at the ends and on one side with pairs of transverse cleats 56 whereby grooves 7-8 are formed between said cleats and the walls are also provided on the opposite side and at one end with similar pairs of transverse cleats 9 which formgrooves 10 between them. The cleats are of somewhat less length than the width of the walls so that they terminate short of one side of each of the walls. The wall 2 is connected to the wall 1 by hinges 11, one leaf of each hinge being recessed in one side of the wall 1, the other leaf of each hinge being recessed in one edge of the wall 2 so that the said walls when opened out are arranged out of line with each other. The wall 3 is similarly connected to the wall 2 by hinges l3 and the wall 4 is similarly connected to the wall 1 by hinges 12.
hen it is desired to arrange the case for use as a shipping case the walls 24 are turned on their hinges to one side of and at v right angles to the wall 1, to cause the said Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July so, 1915. Serial No. 809,075.
wall 1 to form the bottom of the shipping case and this arranges the wall 3 for use as I the top. All the ribs 56, are thus arranged on the inner sides of the said walls to form continuous grooves around the case, at its ends and in its inner side and end pieces 14-15 which are here shown as of rectangular form are placed in the said grooves between the said cleats and caused to form the ends'of'the shipping case. The end piece 14 has a central opening16 and the end piece 15 is provided on one side with a centrally arranged standard 17 at one end of which is a centrallyv arranged stud 18, which stud is adapted to be placed in the said opening as hereinafter stated. The wall 3 is provided on that side which is its outer side when the device is used as a shipping case, with a staple 19 and the wall 4 is provided with a hasp 20 having a hinge member which is recessed in the said wall 4, thesaid hasp also having slots 2122 which are spaced apart. When the device is used as a shipping case the slot 21 registers with the staple and enables a suitable padlock 23 to be used in connection therewith to secure the. wall 4 in closed position.
When it is desired to use the case as a display case the walls are turnedin the reverse direction on their hinges so as to arrange the cleats 5-6 on their outer sides and the cleats 9 on their inner sides. The end piece 14 is placed in the grooves l0.for1ned between the cleats 9, and used as a bottom for the shipping case, the latter'being arranged in an upright position and the end piece 15 being arranged on the flooror other supporting surface and with the stud 18 of the standard 17 in the opening 16, thus pivotally mounting the case on the base formed between the end piece 15 and enabling the case to be turned as may be desired. I When the walls of the case are thus arranged for use as a display case the slot 22 of the hasp will be engaged by the staple, thus securing the walls 3-4 together and the padlock being also employed.
Suitable display devices, such for instance as spring clasps, shown at 25, or suitable shelves or other devices, may be secured or arranged on the same sides of the'walls with the cleats 5-6, to hold the articles to be displayed by the case.
Owing to the arrangement of the hinges which connect the walls of the case together so that one leaf of each hinge is on one side of one wall and the other leaf thereof is at one edge of the next adjacent wall the Walls may be turned on the said hinges in either direction to form a convertible or reversible case and one edge of each wall will abut against one side of another Wall. If desired a suitable ornamental top may also be employed for the case when the latter is set up for use as a display case.
Other changes may also be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim 1. A convertible case of the class described comprising walls and hinges connecting them together, each hinge having one leaf at one edge of one wall and the other leaf at one side of another wall, whereby the walls may be arranged with either side outermost and with one edge of each wall abutting against one side of another Wall, said Walls having grooves in opposite sides, end pieces Copies of this patent may be obtained for adapted to be means to secure the case in closed position.
2. A convertible case of the class described comprising walls and hinges connecting them together, each hinge having one leaf at one edge of one wall and the other leaf at one side of another Wall, whereby the walls may be arranged with either side out ermost, and with one edge of each Wall abutting against one side of another Wall, end pieces adapted to be arranged between the walls, and means to secure the case in closed position and comprising a staple on one side of one wall and a hasp on one side of an adjacent Wall, the said hasp having slots for engagement by the staple according to the arrangement of the case with either side outermost.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
