Description

c. J. JOHNSON. WIRE PLIERS ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 30.1914- Patented July 20, 1915.
k wi 1..
INVENTOR Car/"ad JJoknso/r WIIVESSES A TTOBWEVS CONRAD J". JOHNSON, OF CORRECTIONVILLE, IOWA WIRE-PLIERS ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1915.-
Application field October 30, 1914. SerialNo. 869,382.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CONRAD J. JoHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Correctionville, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Wire-Pliers Attachment,
. ef which the following is a full, clear, and
exact description.
.11 My invention relates to an attachment for wire pliers, which attachment is a wlre cleaner preferably detachable from the pliers.
The object of the invention is to provide a 7 tion and arrangement of parts as herein.
fully described, illustrated and claimed.
' In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and Figure 1 is a perspective iiew of my invention illustrating the same as attached to pliers; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the attachment without the abrasive block; Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the attachment; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentaryperspective view of a modified attachment without the block.
Referring to the drawings, 4 represents a pair of wire pliers to the handle of which my attachment is secured. The attachment, preferably, consists of a cross-shaped blank 5, the two opposite arms of which are bent in the same direction at right angles to the central portion of the blank so as to form a yoke. Each of the arms 6 is provided with an elongated slot 7, through which slots a screw 8 is passed, whereby the attachment is clamped to the handle of the pliers. Of course any other suitable means can be used for attaching the blank. The other arms 9 of the blank are both bent in the opposite direction to the arms 6. The said arms are, preferably, arcuated so that the convex sides thereof are facing. The two arms 7 are resilient enough so as to clamp an abrasive block 10, the sides of which block are concave. The distance between the sides of the abrasive block is greater than the distance between the convex sides of the arms 9; consequently the arms 9 yieldslightly when the block is forced therebetween, thus clamping the abrasive block to the member 5.
In the structure shown in the modified figure, the arms 6 are made resilient, with their end edges bent'inwardly substantially at right angles to the main portion of the arms 6 and which are adapted to engage the under side of the handle of the pliers when said attachment is forced on said handle from the end thereof, the resiliency of the arm 6 clamping the attachment thereto. The yielding arcuated arms 9 at each side thereof are provided with inwardly directed projections 11 intended to engage the end surface of the abrasive block. 10 when the same is fitted between the arms 9. These projections 11 will prevent a lateral movement of the block 10 in the. attachment 5. In using the attachment on the pliers, the same is moved laterally when cleaning a wire by means of the attachment, as can be easily understood. It will be noted that my attachment consists of an abrasive block and a retainer for same adapted to be secured to pliers.
From the foregoing description, taken, in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantage of the construction and operation of the device shown willbe readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention pertains, and while I have described the principle of operation, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the appended claims. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
I 1. In an attachment of the class described, a blank having a pair of resilient, arcuated arms the convex sides of which are facing, and an abrasive block having concave-sides fitting tightly between said arcuated arms said arcuated arms having means at the sides thereof adapted to engage said abrasive block, said blank having a pair of facing arms directed in an opposite direction from 110 placement of the abrasive the arcuated arms, and means associated with sa1d last mentioned arms whereby the attachment can be secured.
2. As an article of manufacture, an attachment for pliers consisting of a cross-shaped blank the two opposite arms of which are bent at right angles to the blank, the other two arms being bent in the opposite direction and arcuated so that the convex sides are facing, all of said arms being resilient, the first mentioned arms being provided with means whereby the attachment can be detachably secured to the pliers, and an abrasive block having concave sides made to fit tightly between the arcuated arms, said arcnated arms having projections at the sides thereof for preventing the lateral disblock between the arcuated sides.
3. In an attachment of the class described, a blank having a pair of resilient arcuated arms facing each other, and an abrasive block having concave sides adapted to fit snugly between said arcuated arms, said blank having another pair of facing arms extending in the opposite direction, said second pair of arms lying in a plane at right angles to the plane of the arcuated arms,
said last mentioned pair of arms having means whereby said attachment can be secured.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CONRAD J. JOHNSON.
