FRANKIE. KNIGHT, or LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR or ONE-HALF TO W. B. RUSH, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
AUXILIARY INFANTS SEAT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. KNIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Infants Seats, of which the following is'a specification.
This invention relates to auxiliary detachable infants seats for water-closets, commodes and the like, the objects being to provide such a seat with a folding rest in which the infant may be strapped which may be folded very compactly for shipping and storage, thus guarding against breakage or damage during transit, and to further provide detachable means for quickly and securely attaching the same to the usual seat of any thickness, said objects being accomplished by the construction, combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a'side elevation of a device embodying my invention as attached to a closet seat, the latter and the bowl being indicated in dotted lines; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal central section through the same, the rod and clamping elements being shown in side elevation and the permanent seat B being indicatedin dotted lines as clamped between seat 3 and the clamping strap 10 and plate 13; Fig. 3,'a top plan view of the seat,
" rest and clamping elements in their folded position; and Fig. 4, a vertical central longitudinal section on line H of Fig-""3.
Referringnow in detail to the "drawings, A indicates the bowl and B the'permanent hinged seat, both being of any usual construction as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
1 indicates the bottom of the auxiliary seat having the usual small opening 2 and provided with a slot 3 running'longitudinally of bottom of seat 1 from the center of the rear edge thereof. Front arms 4:, connected at their upper ends to the U-shaped rest 5 by pivots 6 near connected by pivots 7 to angle pieces or brackets 8 secured to the bottom or seat 1 by screws 9, said brackets 8 being arranged on a line at right angles to the longitudinal central line of the bottom or seat 1 and near the front of the latter.

the ends thereof, are "5 is first swung Patented July 20, 1915.
Application filed January 16, 1915. I Serial No. 2,545.
To the underface of seat 1, and in line with and 'swingingthrough slot 3, is the clamping member or strap 10 pivotally conneoted to a little bracket, lug'or fitting 11 by a pivot 12, the said lug 11 being fastened by any suitable means to the underface of said seat 1. This strap 10 is provided with an Integral clamping plate 13 on its outer end and has a longitudinal its pivot 12 and said plate 13. Also, said strap 10 is made of resilient metal or other suitable resilient: material and is bent upslot 14: between ward at an angle of about45 degrees at a I point about one third of its length away from its pivotal point 12, sothat when portion a of said strap 10 lies-fiat against the underface of trude through slot 3 with the plate 13 well above the upper surface of seat 1, as shown in Fig. 4, and when the strap 10 is swung down so that the portion a. is at an angle of about 45 degrees to seat 1 the portion I b and plate 13 will lie parallel to said seat 1, as shown in Fig. 2.
' A bar or rod 15, fulcrumed on rod 16 mounted in bracket 17 secured to the upper face of seat 1, is pivotally connected to lug 18 riveted to the center of the back of rest 5 and has its lower end protruding through slot i l in strap 10, bent forward at a slight angle and screw-threaded near its-end to receive a winged nut 19 which bears against the under surface of portion a. of the strap 10, see Fig. 2, thus obtaining the full benefit of the resiliency of the strap 10 as well as the compressing action of the nut 19 in the clamping operation. Bending the end of rod 15' forward deflects it out of the way of the inner edge of the permanent seat B when setup, also it allows the rest 5 to fold down flat while using a shorter strap 10 provided with a slot 14: than would be the case were the rod-15 perfectly straight, as will be obvious from the drawings.
A restraining strap 2-0 may be provided to connect the end of rest 5'by snap hooks, or in any other suitable or usual manner.
. In operation, to attach the seat 1, the rest to its highest position. The auxiliary seat 1 is then slid on the usual permanent seat B with the part of seat 1 adjacent slot 3 engaging the upperfaoe of seat B and the clamping plate 13 in line therewith and underneath the lower face of the seat B. The nut 19 is then screwed up on seat 1 the portion 1) will-prothe lower face of said the rod, forcing the strap 10 to swing upward on its pivot until the clamping plate 13 is forced tightly against the under face of the seat B, which is then tightly clamped between the under face of seat 1 and the upper face of plate 13. The infant may then be placed on the seat 1 and fastened in rest 5 by strap 20. To detach it suffices to loosen the nut. 19 by giving it a half turn and then withdraw the seat 1.
To fold the rest 5, seat 1 and clamping elements to their most compact form the rest 5 is to be pushed forward and downward until it liesperfectly flat and parallel with seat 1, with its ends and the arms 4 projecting in front thereof. In this operation the. rod 15 through nut 19 draws the rear end of strap 10 up through slot 3.
All parts above described are to be made of any suitable materials, though wood is preferred by me for the seat 1 with resilient metal for all other parts, especially the clamping member or strap 10.
It is apparent that various changes may be made in the construction, combination and shape of the "arious parts of my invention, of which only the preferred form is shown and described herein,,without departing from the spirit thereof, and. it is my intention and desire to include all such in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An auxiliary seat for infants provided with a folding rest mounted thereon and a clamping device adapted to engage detachably the permanent hinged seat of a water-closet below said auxiliary scat, said device being connected with said folding rest and folding simultaneously therewith.
2. An auxiliary seat for infants provided with a folding rest, and a folding clamp mamas adapted "to engage the permanent seat of a water-closet and comprising an upwardly bent slotted strap pivotally connected to said auxiliary seat and a screw-threaded rod protruding through the slot in said strap 'and'pivotally connected to said rest, and a pivotally connected to the under face of said seat, a clamping plate carried by said strap, a rod pivotally mounted on said seat, pivotally connected to said rest and having its lower end protruding through the slot in said plate, and a nut turning on the end of said rod and engaging said strap.
5. An auxiliary seat for infants, a rest and arms pivotally connected thereto, in combination with a slotted strap pivotally connected to said seat, a rod pivotally mounted on said seat, pivotally connected to said rest and having its lower end protrud ing through the slot in said plate, and means moving'on the lower end of said rod and longitudinally thereof and engaging said strap to force it upward.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
