Be it known that I, THEODORE LANDIS, a subject of the King of Greece, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Blacking-Brushesg and I do hereby declare the following to be a fullyclear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in blacking brushes, and has for its principal object to provide a fountain shoe blacking brush of simple and efhcient construction which may be easily and quickly operated.

Another object of the inventionis to pro vide a device having a novel means for rendering the blacking contalner i liquid-t ght at the point where the operating rod extends thereinto.

A further object of the invention is to provide a means for returning the brush to its normal position after it has once been placed in use.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,

. Referring now to the drawings by charactersof reference, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety the handle portion of the device which is secured to the liquid container designated generally by the numeral 2. This liquid container carries a brush which is designated generally bythe numeral 8,

and which is arranged to-be moistened by the contents of the container. v

The handleyportion 1 hereinbeforef referred to,preferably comprises a pair of semicylindrical members 4 and 5, each of which is provided with a recess 6,. with which the .groove 7 communicates. These recessesand grooves form respectively chambers and axial recesses when: the deviceis in assembled position. A similar recess 8 is provided in the forward end of the handle and is separated from the recess 6 by means of the partition wall designated by the numeral 9. A suitable screw 10 is provided and arranged to assist in holding the two members fland 5 in their proper position.

It will, be evident from the foregoing that the device is first assembled by riveting or otherwise securing the member 5 carrying the extension 39, to the cylindrical body placed on the threaded portion 25 of the shaft 24 and the whole theninserted in the apertures through which the sleeve projects. and the-process of cleaning the shoes may then proceed. When the desired condition of the shoes has been obtained, the. operator by removing his'thumb from the cross piece 32 will permit the valves to again close and stop the flow of liquidinto thebrush.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and-described the preferred embodiment of this'invention, it is .tobe understood that such changes may be made in thecombination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. Having thus described my invention, I claim: i 1. A fountain brush including a liquid'zreceptacle, a handle secured to the liquid receptacle, the handle being provided with an axial bore, a tubular body extending through the wall of the'receptacle, the tubular body being internally screw threaded, ashaft r0- tatable within the tubular body,a spring to'normally hold the shaftin a predetermined position, the liquid-containing chamher being provided with a liqud outlet port and an air inlet port, valves carried'by the shaft and arranged to close the ports, and a thumb piece carried by the shaftto rotate the same against the pressure of "the spring and open the ports.
