Description

E.P\.CHAMBERLIIN- WA SHING MACHINE,
114 6 4 3 Fl G=.1 PAIENTED MAY 9187-1 WITNESSES w NVENWWJRI EDWARD R. CHAMBERLIN, OF BELLEFONTAINE, OHIO Letters Patent No. 114,643, dated May 9, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pan; of the name.
I, EDWARD R. OHAMBERLIN, of Bellefontaine, in the county of Logan and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful improved Washing-Machine.
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
My machine is constructed with a tub divided in two parts by a perforated partition, and with an oscillating frame carrying pivoted arms, to the extremities of which are attached presser-boards, by which the clothes to be washed are pressed against the respective sides of the perforated partition alternately, and, when released, are driven backward by the force of the water, and fall over in such a manner as to expose new parts to the pressing action.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
Figure 1 is a plan of my improved machine. Figure 2 is a longitudinal section thereof.
General Description.
G, to the lower ends of which are attached the perforated presser-boards H, which rest on the bottom of the tub A.
I represents a perforated partition extending across the center of the tub and separating the presserhoards H H.
The pivoting of the arms G adapts them to accommodate themselves to the clothes, and to act on th" same in the most eli'ective manncrwithont rubbing or straining them.
Operation.
The tub being filled with water toasuifieient height clothes are placed within it ich side of the partition I, between the said partition and the presserboards H H, and the frame E is then vibrated by one or more operators hearing down and up on its ends. At each stroke the clothes are pressed forcibly between one of the boards H and perforated partition I, those on the other side of said partition being carried back and separated by the current thus formed. The suds are thus'forcibly squeezed out of each portion of the clothes, and the same opened out in the water so as to again become soaked and expose a new portion to the next action of the presser-boards at every double stroke of the operating frame. By this means the clothes are rapidly cleansed without rubbing.
Claim.
I claim as my invention- The combination and arrangement of the vibrating frame E, pivoted arms G G, presser-boards H H, central partition I, tub A, and standards 0, all substantially as herein represented, and for the purposes set forth.
EDWARD R. GHAMBERLIN.
