Description

H s. WILKI N. Improvement in Buckles. No. 114,631. PatentedMay9,l87l.
In, More wwwwwwm co. m x (DEM/WA? mums) timid sale HENRY s. WILKIN, OFJ'BBMOOKL-YN, new YORK.
Letters Patent No. 114,631, dated May 9, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.
The Schedule referred to in. these Letters Patent and making pan of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY S. WILKIN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Buckles for Suspenders; and the following is declared to be a-correct description of the same.
Hooks'and detachable connections have been made between the suspender-buckle and the loop to which the suspenders are attached; but these connections are often cumbersome, costly, and liable to become unhooked or disconnected by the motion of the body.
The object of my invention is to provide a strong, light, and cheap connection, that can easily be disconnected by the wearer, but which is not liable to become accidentally detached.
The nature of my invention consists in a buckleloop provided with a T-shaped button, combined with a loop for the straps, having a slot to go over the button on the buckle and interlock therewith when the loop is turned around into its usual position.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved buckle;
Figure 2 is a side view of the same; and
Figure 3 is an elevation of the loop for the straps, decached from the buckle.
a. is a buckle of any usual construction. as regards the portion to clamp the snspender b.
The lower end of the buckle is provided with a T- shaped button, 0, and I prefer that the head of the same should be transverse to the suspender-strap. 1
The straps (l e are connected to a loop, f, in any convenient manner, and the upper portion 9 of this loop is provided with a slot, 20, of sulficient length to enable the same to be passed over and the loop hooked upon the T-button of the suspender and rest upon the shank of said button; and, in their normal positions, the slot h and button-head c are at right angles to each other,
which prevents their separation by any ordinary movement to which they are subjected; but the loop f can be easily and quickly separated, when desired, by turning it up at right angles to the buckle and slipping the slot over the button-head, a slight inclination of the loop-plate f enabling the operation to be done without trouble.
The slot It can be shorter than the head of the T- button, so as to unhook from first one end and then the other. The loop will be less liable to unhook when the slot is shorter than the head of the button.
This construction furnishes a flexible joint, which will yield'in any direction to the motion of the body, and which is not liable to become detached by accident, and cannot be disconnected by any vertical movement.
1 donot claim a button with or without projections upon one part of the snspeuder to be inserted through an opening in the other part, and the shank of the button to pass into the slot provided for it, as this has been used. In my device the slot is of a corresponding shape to the T-head, but shorter; hence, is not liable to unhook, and the shank of the T takes the end of the slot when the parts are together.
I claim asffi'iy invention-- The T-shaped button upon the suspender-buckle, and the elongated slot h in the metallic loop, the parts being made, as specified, with the head of the T-shaped but-ton transversely to the suspender-strap and the slot h longitudinally of the same, for the purposes specified.
Dated this 4th day of February, 1871.
