G. SABELMAN.
v NAILING MACHINE. APPUCATION FILED JULY 21,1914.
Patented July 13, 1915.
IN VEN TOR aeorye SabeLM/n BY W- V/ ATTORNEY WITNESSES:
FLAHOGRAPII CO.,WASHENGTON n r urr s rs arr GEORGE SABELMAN, or r-nozenara, CALIFORNIA.
NAILING-MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE SABELMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Proberta, in the county of Tehama and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nailing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a machine which will facilitate nailing. It is especially useful where a large number of nails have to be inserted in rapid succession, as in shingling.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1' is a side view of the machine; Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal vertical section of a portion thereof; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a tube, partly supported upon two legs 2, riveted to the tube. On one terminal portion of the tube is supported a magazine 3 for nails.
In the underside of the tube there extends from the lower side of the magazine to the lower end of the tube a slot a, sufficiently wide to permit the body of a nail 5 to pass therethrough, while the head 10 of the nail is retained within the tube. A. gate 15, adjusted by a handle 25, is provided, which allows to pass only those nails whose stems extend through the slot 1 in the tube. The lower end of said tube is extended to form two vertical walls between which is secured the upper portion of a block 6. To the lower portion of said block, which is reduced in thickness, is secured by screws 7 a second block 8, between which and the block 6 is a third block 9. Said third block is secured in place by a lower screw 11 passed through the blocks 6 and 9 and screwed into the block 8, and also by an upper screw 12 passed through the block 6 and screwed into the block 9, the upper ends of the blocks 8 and 9 being slightly lower than the lower end of the slot 1. When secured in place there is a passage 13 between the blocks 8 and 9 sufficiently wide for the body of a nail to pass therethrough, said passage extending, first, longitudinally, and then transversely, or toward the block 6.
The head of the nail at first slides upon the upper ends of the blocks 8 and 9, part on each, and as the body of the nail turns the corner, from the longitudinal to the transverse portion of the passage, the head of the I Specification of Letters Patent. I lPatented July 13, 1915'. Application filed my 21, 1914. S,er ial1 l'o.852,187. I if I said groove 17, and abutting against the w I body of the nail beneath the head, said. body being still contained in the transverse portion of the passage 13.- In a cylindrical hole,
22 forming an upper extension of said groove 17 can slide a cylindrical bolt 23 having a grooved head 24, and engaging said groove in said head is a wire. spring 26 secured upon the top of the tube 1 by'plates 25 secured by screws to said tube, the upward movement of said spring 26 being limited by a looped portion 27 thereof passing over and around the spring 26. If a blow be given by a hammer to the head of said bolt, said bolt descends in saidhole 22, and the lower end thereof impinges upon one side of the head of the nail, which is at this time extending into said groove 17, and
The bottom 28 of the transverse portion of the passage slopes downwardly toward the block 6, so that, if the point of the nail still remains in said passage as it descends, said point is finally forced out of said passage into the groove 17 into vertical alinement with the head, and, when the point of the nail passes out of the lower end of said passage, it has assumed an accurately vertical position. By reason of the sloping surfaces 14, 16 the head is also moved from the blocks 8 and 9 almost entirely into the groove 17 in the block 6, so as to be completely under the end of the bolt, so that,'in the final mo tion of the nail under the action of the bolt,
Secured to the upper portion of the block 6 and extending over the head of the nail before said head passes over the tops of the blocks 8 and 9 is a stop 29 which automatically arrests the head of any nail in the lower portion of the slot, if at too high a level to properly pass over the tops of the blocks 8 and 9. Secured to the under side of the tube,.one on each side of the slot 4%, are guide plates 30, which guide the nail accurately into the longitudinal portion of the passage 13.
I claim v A nailing machine comprising a slotted tube down which the nails can travel, a passage-way at the lower end of said tube of suflicient Width for the greater part of its height to receive only the body of a nail, the first portion of said passage-way being in the same vertical plane as said tube, and
'means for upholding a nail in such position in said guide-way that its head will arrest the next succeeding nail in said passageway at a point at Which its head is outside the path of the bolt.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
I GEORGE SABELMAN.
