iaaaiao.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. PARARO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Benhaden, in the county of l/Vakulla and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Tie-Spacing Devices, of which the following is a specification. a
y invention relates to improvements in devices for spacing rail ties and resides in the provision of novel means whereby ties may be spaced from each other into the desired position in an extremely reliable and expeditious manner.
Another important object of my invention is to provide a device that is to be posltioned upon a rail and is to cooperate with a jack of the ordinary type so that the head of the jack may be placed against said means and the base against the tie to be.
spaced and upon operation of the jack, the tie is spaced in the desired manner.
Another object of importance is to provide simple means of the character described that will, owing to its peculiar construction enable a great'number of ties to be spaced in a comparatively short time and by few laborers, said device being simple as to construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out as claimed.
With reference to the drawing, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the figure in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding view showing my device in operative position.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates a rail mounted on ties 2 of the ordinary type and 3 a lifting jack of the ordinary construction usually found in railway tools.
My improved spacing device comprises an approximately rectangular and preferably Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 8, 1914. Serial No. 843,844.
metallic body 4 that is provided intermediate its ends with a transverse opening 5 formed in the under face of the body and designed to receive the ball of a rail as shown in the drawing. The upper end faces of the body 4: are beveled as at 6 and provided centrally of their ends on the upper faces of the body is an upstanding flange 7 forming a handle portion and provided along its upper longitudinal edges with projecting ribs 8 to enable gripping of the handle. If desired an opening may be formed in the handle portion 7 In operation, my improved device is placed upon a rail so that a transverse central opening 5 receives the ball of'the rail and'the jack 3 is disposed in an angular plane with relation to the rail with its head in engagement with the projected portion of the body 4 with its face in engagement with the tie to be spaced as clearly shown in the drawing. By proper manipulation of the jack 3 the tie that engages the face of the jack will be spaced relatively to the rail and other ties. The angular disposition of the jack relative to the rail and body of the device provides for the gripping of the body on the head or ball of the rail and prevents slipping.
It will be readily seen with reference to the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that in a comparatively short time a few men can space a large number of ties in areliable manner.
In practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary,
I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the tion, as set forth.
Vhat is claimed is A'rail tie spacing device comprising a rectangular body having a transverse openadvantages of my invening formed in its under face and centrally ing an elongated opening therein and longiof its ends to receive the ball of a rail, said tudinal beads on the edges thereof. 0 opening being approximately rectangular In testimony whereof I aifix my signature and of considerably greater Width than that in presence of two Witnesses.
5 of the ball of the rail, the ends, of said body WILLIAM R. PARARO.
being beveled upwardly and an upstanding Vitnesses: handle formed on the upper edge of said A. BERNARD BYRD, body consisting of a rectangular plate hav- W. S. QUARTERMAN.
