Description

H. P. STINDE.
(No Model.)
FIRE TONGS'.
Patented Nov. 15, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN F. STINDE, OF 'S'IEELEVILLE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO MARY E.
I STINDE, OF SAME PLACE.
FlRE-TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,418, dated November 15, 1887.
Application filed March 31,1887. Serial No. 238,243. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERMAN F. STINDE, a citizen of the United Statesresiding at Steele ville, in the county of Randolph and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Construction of Fire-Tongs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a true and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this my specification.
My invention consists of a projection or guide-lever extending from the movable leg above or beyond the hinge into an inclosed socket-chamber whichis formed in the handle attached to the fixed leg of fire-tongs, the object being to prevent the passing each other of the grasping ends of the legs and to construct simple, practical, and convenient fire tongs.
The drawings are in six figures.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
Figures 1 and2 are perspective views showing the construction of the fire-tongs, with traced lines showing the location and quadrangular form of asocket-chamber, b, in the handle a,and also the projection or guide-lever e,eXtending from the leg d into the chamber in the handle a above the rivetf, as well as the play of the guide-lever in the chamber and the span of the tongs. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the construction of the projection or guide-levere above the rivetflextending from the leg d. Fig. 4 is a detail side view showing the handle a with the fixed leg cand the opening to the socket-chamber b for the insertion of the projection or guide-lever e when not open below, as in Fig. 2, and by traced lines the narrow side of the chamber 12. Figs. 5 and 6 are crosssectional views, Fig. 5 showing the chamber 1) at the upper end in the handle a, and Fig. 6 showing the lower end of the same chamber.
To accomplish the foregoing object, (using the well-known methods of working metals,) I construct or cast the handled of fire-tongs tapering from about the middle of its length downward, (ornamenting the handle atpleasure,) with one leg, 0, attached, and with an inclosed quadrangular chamber, 12, having two sides parallel with each other and of sufficient distance apart to admit a guide-lever, e, and to hold it steady in the direction of the opening and closing of the tongs,as shown by traced lines in Fig. 4, and the other two sides tapering downward to giveplayinthe direction ofthe opening and closing of the tongs for the upper end of the guide lever 6, extending from the movable leg d above or beyond the rivetf, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2,.aud I construct the movable leg (1 with a guide-lcver, 0, extending above or beyond the hingerivetf, so as to form a movable fit between the parallel sides of the socket-chamber b, and tapering upward from the rivetf to increase the play in the upper and wider end of the chamber b, as shown by traced lines in Figs. 1 and 2. I am aware that for a similar purpose others haveformed in one side of the handle of tongs a recess closed with a plate, (attached to the handle by a screw and the pivot-bolt,) into which fitted a projection from the movable leg; but this invention I do not claim.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In tongs, the combination of the fixed leg, the handle having the socket-chamber formed Within it, the movable leg having the tapering projection or guidelever, and the rivet-bolt, substantially as and for the purposes described.
HERMAN F. STINDE.
