To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. RoBnRTs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Asotin, in the county of Asotin and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Sliding Blocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to sliding blocks which are used in connection with the reversing gear of an engine, and the principal object of the same. is to so construct the block that it may adjust itself to the size of the guide way in which it travels thus taking up all lost motion.
This invention comprises in brief a plurality of sections which are held together by means of bolts and plates, the bolts limiting the longitudinal movement of the sections and the plates limiting the transverse movement.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the im proved block. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the block. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the plates used. Fig. 4- is a perspective view of the remaining plate used.
Referring to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that this invention comprises three sections 10, 11, and 12, the section 10 being in longitudinal section an isosceles triangle, and the sections 11 and 12 being right triangles. These sections are held together by bolts 13 and plates 14 and 15, the bolts 13 limiting the longitudinal movement of the sections and the plates 14 and 15 limiting the transverse movement. The plate 14 extends across the base of the sections 11 and 12 and is provided with side flanges 16 which extend along the sides of the block. The central portion of the plate is provided with a transversely extending slot 17 and with longitudinally extending slots 18 above and below the slot 17. These slots 17 and 18 are so positioned that the point of the central section may pass through the slot 17 a limited distance and so that the bolts 13 may pass through the slots 18. The plate 15 fits upon the opposite end of the block and is provided with the side flanges 19 which extend along the sides of the block. The central portion of the plate 15 is of the same height as the base of the section 10, and the side flanges 19 extend above and below the central section so that they extend along the sides of the sections 11 and 12. The plate 15 is provided with a central opening 20 and with upper and lower openings 21, the ends of the bolts 13 passing through the openings 21. Nuts 22 are screwed upon the ends of the bolts so that the bolts may be held in place so as to limit the longitudinal move mentof the sections. The section 10 is provided with a longitudinally extending threaded opening 23 which communicates with a transversely extending opening 24. The rod 25 has its threaded end 26 passing through the opening 20 into the opening 23, the rod being secured in place by means of the lockingnut 27. The connecting rod pin 28 is mounted in the opening 24. This block is mounted in the guide way with the pitman rod secured in the opening 23 and the nuts 22 are adjusted so that the block is adjusted to the height of the guide way. After the engine has been in use for some time the guide way and blocks become worn slightly and the sections 12 andll are then slid upon the section 10 so that the block will adjust itself 'to the height of the guide way. It will thus be seen that this block will automatically adjust itself to the height of the guide way so that any slack will be taken up and all lost motion done away with. It should also be noted that the plates 14 and 15 prevent the sections from getting out of alinement with each other so that there is no danger of the blocks becoming caught or jammed in the guide way and also takes the strain off of the bolts 13 so that there is no danger of the bolts becoming bent.
Having thus described, the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A block of the character described comprising a plurality of sections, longitudinally extending bolts adjustably connecting said sections, and platesmounted adjacent the ends of said bolts and provided with side flanges extending along the sides of said block to limit the transverse movement of said section.
2. A block of the character described comprising a central section having an isosceles triangular-shape in longitudinal section, a section above and below said central section each having a right triangular shape in longitudinal section, longitudinally extending adjusting bolts passing through said sections, and plates mounted adjacent the ends of said bolts and provided With side flanges extending along the sides of said block.
3. A block of the character described comprising a central section having an isosceles triangular shape in longitudinal section, upper and lower sections fitting upon said central section and each having a right triangular shape in longitudinal section, bolts passing through said sections, a plate at one end of said block mounted upon said bolts, and provided With a transversely extending slot through which the point of said central section is adapted to pass, and a plate at the opposite end of said block mounted upon said bolts, said plates being provided With side flanges extending along the sides of said block.
4. A block comprising a plurality of sections, one of said sections being provided With a transversely extending opening and with a longitudinally extending openin means for adjustably connecting said sections together to limit the longitudinal movement thereof, and means for limiting the transverse movement of said sections.
