KNOCKDOWN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION'.
Application 'led July 22,
To alllwhomt may 'concern :Be it known that I, IRVINE. 'MoFAnLAND, va citizen ofthe United States, residing at the cityof Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia `and Statey of Pennsylvania, have-invented 4certain vnew fand useful Improvements in Knoclrdovvn Building Construction, of'vvhich Ythe. following! is a speciiication.
This4 invention generally statedlrelates to bui-lding-construction f and;v has more p articu lar Arelation to fanattachment employed in Ibuildingf'construction of knoclcdown character. f
-The leading object of the present inven- .t-ion may-be saidfto-.be-the providing of a simple, efficient and comparatively inexpensive atachment employed for temporarily :securingl together parts of building construction offfknock-doW-n type Wherebythe parts may be readily Aand yet'peditimisly put `tov-rget`her an'd'taken apart and still possess a maXimumdegree of rigidity in assembled position. Other and further objects relate to the provision of I general details of con- `struction and arrangement and combination Iof.parts forl attaining the results sought by the leading` object.
The invention v consists of "the improve- "ments hereinafter described and lina-lly c-laimed.
The nat-ure, characteristic features yand scope of-the invention Will'be more fully 'understood -fromthe following description .taken in connection Withthe accompanying drawings formingY part hereof, and in which:
Fig. f1, is a top or planvievv, partly in elevation and partlyin section, of agpost and `a rail/about to be assembled,
Fig. 2,-is a -viexvfin side elevation, partly sectioned; of theparts shown in Fig. y1, vin .assembled position,
Fig. 3, is a -face view ofv-aipost,
Fig. :4, yis-a rear elevational viewfofthe lock-plates shown in Figs. 1 and 2,
Fig. 5, is a view in cross section of the lock-bolt shown in'Figs. 1 'and 2, and
Fig. 6, is a view of the lock-bolt looking toward the left hand side of Fig. 5.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that 1921. serial no. 485,766.
the various instrumentalities of which Amy invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to' theprecise arrangement and' organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Yl/Vhile the attachment about to be devscribedis applicable to Lvarious forms` of building construction 1t 'is particularly adapted Afor'use inV erecting partitionsI calculated for temporary use. lny practice one {part of my improved attachment is carried lby an upright or post and a companion part by a horizontal rail. -Obviously the number 4of posts and rails varywith the type of Work rtol be done and it Will be understood that as manyfaces of a post are equippedivith my attachmentas there are rails to be attached.
However, since each part is a duplicate of yanother l have shown inthe kdrawings for illustrative purposes the upper end of a rail.
yfl-nthe drawings 10 designates an upright or post, usually of Wood, atleast one face of Which is v.countersunlr to accommodate ya :plate 11, secured to said post as by screws 12.
yPlate 11 is provided with a `substantially T vshaped openingy therethrough, thev upper VAor enlarged end being designated 13; thelower end being narrow or slot-li-lre'and incommunication with the'enlarged end and beying designated 14C. Upon the rear-face of such plate, one `upon each side of said slot 14, are rlbsl Which taper inwvardly'from the upper -to the lower portion of said slot and form guides lfor a ylock-bolt yhereinafter referred to. The opening `and ribs are formed by re- -moving someof the plate material to providetheopening 'and then bending-the materialimmediately surrounding portions of Athe opening thus made toprovide'the ribs.
l'lhe post lO-fis cut awaywasv at 16 to the rear of platefll. Adaptedto be secured between a pairof-posts 10, equipped with plates as with the tapered ribs l5. These grooves are also tapered, see Fig. 5, so that the head be properly aligned with said ribs. In other words the head is scored to provide grooves with parallel walls and inclined bottoms to engage the ribs. The shank 19 has screwthreaded relation with rail l?. In assembling the parts the leads 18 of a rail are inserted through the openings 13 of plates ll of a pair of posts and the grooves of the heads caused to engage with the ribs of the plates ll. By pressing downward upon the rail the heads travel along the ribs l5 and gradually bind with respect thereto thus bringing the ends of a rail in snug abutting relation with the faces of a post, the heads being accommodated within spaces 16. Since the heads have screw-thrcaded relation with a rail it is possible to adjust theA It will now be apparent that I have de-l vised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have in the peresent instance shown and described the preferred kembodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I'claim is:
l. In combination a vertical member and a horizontal member adapted for detachable application thereto of which the first mentioned member is provided with an apertured plate the rear face of said plate being provided with inclined ribs which aperture and ribs are formed by removing some of the plate material to provide the aperture and bending the material immediately surrounding portions of said aperture thus made to provide the ribs and of which the last mentioned member is provided with a head for passage through said apertured plate, a face of said head being scored to provide grooves with parallel walls and in clined bottoms to engage said ribs.
2. In combination a vertical member and the material immediately surrounding por-l l tions of said opening thus made to provide the ribs and vof which the last mentioned member is provided with a head for passage through said opening, said head being scored to provide grooves with parallel walls and inclined bottoms to engage said ribs.
3. In combination avertical member and a horizontal member adapted for detachable application thereto of which the first mentioned member is provided with a rectangular, cut-away portion, a rectangular plate fitted within said cut-away portion which plate has a substantially T-shaped opening therethrough and is provided with inclined ribs upon the rear face thereof said ribs being disposed in a planeat right angles to the vertical plane of the plate and projecting into said cut-away portion', said opening and ribs being formed by removing some of the plate material toprovide the opening and bending the material iming thus made to provide the ribs, and of which the last mentioned member is provided with a head for passage through the plate opening into said cut-away portion, a face of said head being scored to provide grooves with parallel walls and inclined bottoms to engage said ribs.
ll. In combination a pair of members adapted to be detachably tted together of which one 0f said members has secured thereto a plate having an opening therethrough and having inclined ribs upon its rear face, which opening and ribs are formed by removing some of the plate mamediately surrounding portions of the openterial to provide the opening and bending IRVIN II.
