To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUcUsTUs W. Mao- Knnzns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cheyenne, in the county of Laramie and State of Wyoming, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The primary purpose of the present intion is the provision of novel locking means for double doors which serve both to secure the doors to the frame or casement and to each other, such locking means embodying a supplemental lock for preventing manipulation of the main or door locking means. The invention consists of complemental lock members mounted upon the respective doors and adapted to interlock so as to prevent relative movement of the doors after the latter have been properly closed and fastened, each of such lock members being connected by gearing with an independent locking means, whereby the door is secured to the frame or casement.
The invention further consists of unique connecting means between the two locking members of each door-whereby both of such locking members are actuated simultaneously whereby the door is locked to its casement or frameand the two doors are made fast one to the other.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated and claimed.
In the drawings hereto attached: Figure 1 is a front view of a pair of doors provided with locking means embodying the invention. Fig.2 is a rear view of the doors and locking means. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line mw of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is an enlarged section on the line yyof Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on the line 2 e of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail view showing more clearly the supplemental looking means.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The numerals 1 and 2 designate double doors which may be mounted in any manner and as shown, such doors are hinged to swing outward. Complemental locking members 3 and 1 are mounted upon the respective doors 1 and 2 and are adapted to interlock to prevent relative movement of such doors when properly closed and fastened. The lockingmember 41 consists of a bar provided at opposite ends with projections 5 in which are formed openings 6. The member 1 is adapted to move in the plane of the door 2 and the projections 5 are adapted to be extended beyond the edge of the door 2 so as to enter openings in the abutting edge of the door 1. The member 3 consists of a bar and is mounted upon the door 1 and has pins 7 near its ends to pass through the openings 6 of the projections 5 so as to secure the two members and thereby prevent relative movement of the doors when closed and fastened by means of the locking members 3 and 4. A shaft 8 is mounted upon thedoor 2 and has a threaded portion 9 to make'screw thread connection with the locking member 4:. A shaft 10 is mounted upon thedoor 1 and has screw thread connection with the looking member 3 as indicated at 11. Rotation of the shafts 8 and 10 effects movement of the respective locking members so as to secure in relation the doors as may be required.
-A spindle 12 is mounted upon the door 2 and hasa knob 13 at its outer end to be grasped when it is required to turn such spindle to operate the locking members. A gear wheel 14 at the inner end of the spin.- dle l2 meshes with a gear element 15 at one end of the shaft 8. It is to be understood that the spindle'12 may be geared in any manner to the shaft Stocause a consonance of movement of the spindle and shaft. The spindle 12 is mounted in the door in any manner and suitable ball bearings are provided to reduce the friction between the moving parts to the smallest amount possible. A. look bolt 16 is mounted upon the door 2 and is adapted to be projected into an opening in the door frame or casement 17. A. shaft 18 mounted upon the door 2 has screw thread connection with the lock bolt 16 and is geared to the spindle 12, and for this purpose a gear element 19 secured to such shaft 18 is in mesh with the gear element 14L of the spindle 12. It will be understood that rotation of the spindle 12 effects a simultaneous movement of the lock bolt 16and the lock member 4, both being projected or retracted at the same time.
A look bolt 20 is mounted upon the door 1 and has screw thread connection with a shaft 21 which is geared to the shaft 10. As shown, a bevel pinion 22 fastened to the shaft 21 is in mesh with the bevel gear Wheel 23 secured to the shaft 10. Rotation of the shaft 10 results in a simultaneous movement of the lock member 8 and lock bolt 20, both being projected or retracted according to the direction of the rotation of the shaft 10. It is noted that the shaft 10 acts in the same capacity as the spindle l2 and is provided at one end with a knob 24- which is grasped by the hand when turning the spindle shaft 10. Ball bearings are provided to diminish the friction of the shaft 10 so that the same may be turned easily. Each of the knobs 13 and 24: is provided with a hasp 25 which is adapted to engage a pin 26. These parts 95 and 26 provide for the application of a seal 27, such as commonly employed for preventing tampering with locks of various characters. i The shaft 10 is provided with a pin 28 which is adapted to be engaged by means of a fork 29 at the outer end of the lock bolt 30 of a key operated lock 31 of any approved type. The fork 29 embraces opposite sides of the shaft 10 and its forked members are bifurcated and engage the proj ecting ends of the pin 28 thereby preventing rotation of the shaft 10 when the lock bolt 3O is projected, so that it is practically im possible to open the door locking members 3 and 4: after the same have been engaged when the doors are closed.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which Inow consider to be the best embodiment thereof ll desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. The combination with double doors having recesses in the meeting edges there of, of a locking bar arranged in the recess of one of the doors for movement in the plane of the latter and having apertured projections adapted to be extended within the other of said recesses when the doors are closed, a second bar arranged within the recess of the other door for tranverse move ment with respect thereto and having pins adapted to enterthe openings of the projections, and means for operating said bars.
2. The combination with double doors having recesses in the meeting edges thereof, of a rotatable shaft mounted in one of said doors and having a threaded portion extended within the recess thereof, a locking element movably mounted on said threaded portion, a second rotatable shaft extended transversely through the recess of the other door and having an intermediate threaded portion, a complemental locking element movably mounted thereon, and means for rotating said shafts for moving said elements at right angles to each other for interlocking engagement.
3. In combination, a rotatable shaft having a threaded portion, a locking element threadedly adjustable thereon upon rotation of said shaft, a second shaft disposed at a right angle to said first shaft, 'a lock bolt threadedly adjustable on said second shaft, a beveled gear connection between said shafts, and means for rotating the latter and simultaneously operating the lock element and the lock bolt.
4. In combination, a lock member, a shaft or spindle having connection with the lock member, a pin fitted to the shaft or spindle, a lock and a fork connected with such lock and adapted to engage the projecting ends of the beforementioned pin to prevent movement of the shaft or spindle.
